Hack-a-Shaq.......... what a disgrace for the game!

From a fan's point of view this really piss me off, not only this slows down the game, but it also hinders the enjoyment and beauty of watching two great teams battle each other for the right to advance in the playoffs. Honestly, it was kind of sad to see a great defensive team like the Spurs use the Hack-a-Shaq.
The league should change the rules to make the game more enjoyable to watch. This type of tactics should be call for what it is an "intentional" foul. When a player comes up and hugs another player (when he doesn't have the ball), that's an intentional foul.
And the worse part is that this will never stop, it hasn't stop in the last 10 years. Teams will always employ this until the league does something about it.

Gaben Newell They're also fining players to players who flop, so it has been less prevalent. You get paid millions of dollars every year to play basketball. If you can't shoot above 70+%, you need to do some serious off season work to improve. Free throws are one of the most integral parts of the game, and if you can't make them on a consistent basis, you shouldn't be on the floor in crucial situations.

That strategy actually was used on Wilt Chamberlain a lot. With Wilt being a career 51% free throw shooter, it wasn't an uncommon strategy, because there weren't many bigs that could slow him down. In fact, if he hadn't hit 21/22 fts, he wouldn't have never scored 100 in that game. In 1961-62, he averaged 17 fts a game.

Then again, I'm sure a team would sacrifice one of their useless players to get Shaq suspended if he actually did exact revenge on them. I have to give him props for maintaining his composure, I think most people would lose it when they are trying to play, and getting fouled repeatedly.

I see nothing wrong with this sort of strategy in a game. In any competition, the way you win is to expose and take advantage of your opponents' weaknesses. No, it isn't very fun to watch, but it gets the job done. Also, it encourages players to practice on their free throw shooting. Other players that struggle with free throw shooting will see this and realize that they don't want to be taken advantage of and embarrassed on national TV (and it won't end up on RU-vid). Players will work on their free throws and it will happen less often when the majority of players can make it more than 60% from the line.
@badxgrass
@badxgrass 9 лет назад
Exactly. If a player has a blatant weakness, it's gonna be taken advantage of...it is up to the player so he can't be abused. Make the FT's and punish the opponent.

I love Pop for doing this. I'd do the same without a second thought. What's the difference between fouling shaq in the 2nd quarter or fouling off the ball in the last minute when the team is losing? How is it different from running out the clock in 4th quarter? How is it different when teams foul on fast breaks? We pay money to see the games but coaches have a responsibility to win, no matter what the cost (within the rule book). What fans put on the line (~50 bucks) is nothing in comparison.

d'antoni's system is for fast paced scoring. he likes guys to run the floor and doesn't care about defense. keeping the pace disrupted and slow is going to throw them off their game. scoring against a team led by d'antoni is not nearly as important as keeping them from scoring. if you do that he gets slaughtered as happened.

@DoUEvenLift
@DoUEvenLift 10 лет назад
***** Atleast 75%? you do realize that's right on par with the league average in FT%, if you have a dominant big man like Shaq who can lead the league in ppg & FG% you would take Bosh over him simply cause he isn't an average FT shooter? Those expectations are too high, with a dominant big man like Shaq i'd like to see 60%, but either way Shaq's talent made up for his struggles at the FT line. A lot of these players spend the most time in practice working on their FT shooting(since it's their main weakness) and still little improvement, there's only so much you can do about your natural ability to shoot accurately if not everybody would be shooting 90%, these are star professional athletes, they work harder to be in the position they are than most people will work to do anything, if practice was the only thing necessary to be a great shooter just about everybody in the NBA would be, cause if they didn't work extremely hard they wouldn't be like the 1 in a million that make the NBA in the first place. And Bosh is a PF, he plays C in MIA cause they play a smaller game, but ever since his move to C his stats have went down across the board, that's no coincidence, he's a natural PF.
@DoUEvenLift
@DoUEvenLift 10 лет назад
***** Shaq dominating for the first 40m of a game & the last 2 minutes > Brooke Lopez playing well for the full 48. And all the people you named from Jordan to Bogut never shot 60% from the FT line, if you can shoot 60% or higher people aren't going to hack you that often because that's not a smart move putting somebody on the line who's going to make a basically guaranteed 3/5 FT's they take, you'd rather play good defense and have them get 0 points. Putting a 40% shooter like Deandre Jordan on the line is something you'll live with cause you know he's usually going to make no more than 1 FT so you'll live with it. So yeah shooting 60% from the line isn't good, but it's good enough to keep the hacking away and allow your players to stay in the game.
@thecaptain130707
@thecaptain130707 11 лет назад
All players give free throws their due time. However, when it comes to game time some players have the ability to shoot free throws with ease while other players will struggle in the spotlight. Shaq was a great player, and it's a shame that his biggest weakness was abused to the benefit of other teams in both big and small games.

Hack a Shaq is beautiful. It shows that the game isn't just dunks and three pointers - strategy is important as well. A true basketball fan should understand that. Doug Collins has it right - it's in the rule book now, so it's fair. I'd love to have courtside seats and see this, especially if I were near Shaq's opponents' bench, so I could compliment the coach. When an offensive player that is away from the ball is fouled, while two minutes is left during regulation play, that offensive team has the right to select any of their players (already on the court) to shoot/convert the free throws. During the NBA Finals 2000, Sam Perkins of the Pacers fouled Shaq under two minutes. Not the best timing^^. It boosted the Laker's lead without Shaq at the free throw.

The hack-a-shack is easy to counter. Just shoot over 60% of your free throws. There's no excuse for an NBA player to shoot under 50%. Luckily for Shaq, he was so dominant of a force that he could get by with it until this rule came along. But, a coach found a way to make Shaq work his offense.

It baffles me that professionals who have been playing this game at every level shoot free throws at 60% and less. There is nothing wrong with this strategy. Coaches shouldn't have to consider what the fans want when they draw up plays and strategies.

Send in your worst player and have him commit the most flagarant foul and put the spurs star player in the hosptal.

Every team must exploit the opponents’ weakness… All Shaq had to do was practice his foul shots. That simple

Guys, might sound stupid? But what is the hack-a-shaq and how does it work? Who gets the foul etc etc? thx

it's actually a genius move. it only means that Shaq needs to work on his FT. You can't do this with Nicolai Jokiv. you will be down by 50 points.

Though I'm no basketball expert, here are my points to this strategy... If Team A puts in a hardly-used bench player in to foul Team B's player, a 50% FT shooter, that weakens BOTH teams on offense. Team A has their bench warmer in on offense, but Team B still has their big player in on defense. In addition, Team A can only foul so many times before running out of bench players. Finally, while time is taken to shoot the free throws, game time does not run, so you only lose a few seconds for each hack. You still get to enjoy just as much basketball, and have time during timeouts to run to your fridge and grab a beer. As for the fans in the stands, I would imagine it sucks, but it can only last for a little bit. I think this strategy should be allowed.

No team is using up all of their bench warmers for this. You do it at specific times of the game to make Shaq less effective in those moments. You don't need to keep the bench warmer in the game you sub him out as soon as the foul is called and Shaq goes up to the free throw line.

This is a part of a game. This is just a clever strategy, we can't say that it is a shameful method. Everyone has their own advantages and disadvantages, spurs just make use of Shaq's disadvantages. By the way, we can't say that because of the mismatch is an unfair play, so we should not use it in the game. It is the same idea as hack, in short, we are just using opponent's week points.

your right! its actually pretty funny too, but this should encourage the player to get better at free throws.

If one of the teams in a game is doing this all through the game, what should happen? If a team play his entire league matches with this tactic, what should happen?

I watched all that live. And although it was annoying. YOU JUST GOTTA MAKE YOUR DAMN FREE THROWS. I always wish shaq implemented the granny shot into his free throw routine. The ultimate meme and he's gonna snatch up another 5,000 points easy.

i dont know if this has changed yet or not but i do agree...if there is an intentional foul away from the ball, the coach should get to choose who shoots the free throws and put his best guy on the line

@wallaceX2jc in theory it seems like a possibility, but considering that it could hinder that players future, i don't players would execute those types of plays on purpose. i can't speak for everyone, but im sure a guy who doesn't get minutes is working hard to get more time and become more useful in the league.

great strategy, coach Pop is a great coach, its a great way to take a team out of a rythem, and get the ball back with the suns only scoring one, or even no points a posession!

If you are playing in the BEST BASKETBALL LEAGUE in the world and you can't make FTS... there is a problem... Rules should never be changed to spoil those who don't practice on their game.

Eh. As a player I see nothin wrong but on the business side, had they kept doin this consistently there definitely would have been a rule change. NBA schedules their games for atleast 2 hrs, including commercials, fouls, halftime, etc. If the run time kept being over 2 hrs and interrupting other regularly scheduled programs, this would had for sure been a rule change.

@iN31L under two minutes left the ball is giving to whomever the team wants to shoot it if they are not the ball handler. That ruling may have changed. I haven't been keeping track of the league for a few years and these rule changes are mostly designed to give the offensive player an advantage. (This is done, if I'm correct, to pad the points to increase tv ratings, etc.) I'm sure someone will correct me. I'm a Blazer fan of the 90s when Hack-a-shaq was used in the NBA.
@EspadaDos

Yes Pop is a genius for thinking of it. It is the players fault that they can't make a free throw. But Pop should only do it when they are behind or at the last 2 minutes of the game. To succeed on winning the game.
