Another comment, I have heard people say the hackmore did not work for them, however, I also have heard that most people dont know how to properly "fit" a hackmore on a horse, and I'm referring to myself as well.

If lawyers and doctors can call it a practice why can't we?

Thought I saw a story that said some associations are making it illegal to shave the whiskers.

@@HorsemanshipAsAnArt It is true, thank goodness. They are sensory apparatus, and very crucial to the horse. These sensory hairs have their own nerve and blood supply, which makes them extremely sensitive to the touch. Horses can even feel air movement with their whiskers! Removing their whiskers is completely unnecessary and confusing for these animals, who rely on them to help them perceive the world.

@@loryspencer8215 I agree, I think shaving the whiskers is cruel and a judge can't see it anyway. I have whiskers and I hate shaving them lol.

When you tie the knot backwards does that terminal knot ever get in the way of your hackmore moving back when you pull on you reins?

No, if everything is adjusted correctly it shouldn't

When exactly did the term mecate turn into McCarty? I heard a young girl use this a couple years ago in Washing at a clinic and I had to ask her what she was referring to.
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Год назад
IN my understanding the word Mecate that simply means rope in Spanish was Basterdised to McCarty some time after 1850 when the Anglos started coming to California. I speak Spanish fluently and never heard the tool called a Mecate until about ten years ago when people started going ultra traditional. All of the Mexican Vaqueros I have worked with call a hair rope a variety of slang terms for "little rope" depending on the region they come from. I have worked in Mexico and South America and with a lot of our southern cousins and have only ever heard Anglo's call a hair rope a Mecate.

@@HorsemanshipAsAnArt that’s very interesting, thanks for explaining. I grew up only hearing and reading it called a mecate. So let me get this straight, the old term became a new term, when it was “Merican-ized? And now, “Mericans” think the new, old term is wrong?😂😂😂sounds about right.
@loryspencer8215

@@HorsemanshipAsAnArt I often wondered that. as well...I prefer Mecate, as that is what I was raised on, but also recognize that Macarty is also accepted, though technically not really correct.

@@loryspencer8215 Its just slang, when is slang wrong? I think this started sometime after 1850 when California became anglicized

@@charliewhon6548 you got it. People that invent an accent when talking about Pakistan call a hair rope a mecate, the rest of us call it a McCarty

People who call a Mecatae a Mecarty must be from Scotland

My Grandmother was born on the boat from Scotland to New York. Literally every one of my ancestors came here from the island. As it were Mecarty would be a sir name of the Black Irish not a Scot.

As I mentioned in other comments, I have worked with a lot of guys south f the border and have worked south of the border myself and have never heard a hair rope called a mecate. The direct translation is "rope" but there are a hundred slang words for it in Spanish. Im an Anglo so I call it by the anglo name.

Sir: The word is Mecate - (me - ca - te i.e. Rein). Alas, I am certain that you already know this. Please. Give the Spanish Vaqueros their due. Americans tend to be notoriously disrespectful in this way.

Yes, well....I am aware of the bastardization of the word. I am also fluent in Spanish and have worked south of the border as far as Patagonia and have worked north of the border with many of our Hispanic cousins. I have never once heard them call a hair rope a mecate. The direct translation of that word is not "reins" it is "little rope" and there are hundreds of slang terms that mean the same thing. Further there is no such thing as a Spanish Vaquero, a "cowboy" in Spain is a Montador (Spelling?) and Vaquero is also a bastardization of pure Spanish. A Vaquero is a Mexican, a people that are proud of there country and there heritage and hate being called Spanish. Americans do tend to be disrespectful in this way and by calling a Sonoran a Spaniard rather than a Mexican you are doing just that.
