Jack and Mack talk about Hack...ers. Jack is joined by special guest Macaulay Culkin to talk about this "classic" mid-90s techno-thriller or whatever it is. Special thanks to Macaulay Culkin. Check out more of his stuff at bunnyears.com/
Oh cool my favourite RU-vid game reviewer comments on vid made by my favourite Movie dudes channel. Is this confirmation of my good tastes or something?
Culkin might actually have the most chemistry of any of the guests they've had, its shocking how well he fits in with the sarcastic sense of humor they have and I hope to see him back especially for a best of the worst
He's great in other guest appearances with RU-vid sensations like AVGN (James Rolfe) and I think he was also on a Good Mythical Morning episode where he was a really good guest. Nice to see Culkin got his life straightened out.
They said the characters were over the top, especially Matthew Lillard but in high school in New York I knew a lot of people who acted just like this. It seemed pretty spot on to me.
I would love if Macaulay culkin just became a member of redletter media out of nowhere, and they acted as if he's always been there and it's not a big deal. so far it's a possibility.
Pretty crazy how Culkin had such vivid knowledge of the Pan Am building in New York... one might think he has been there before... maybe even lost there?
Wasn’t he always? I mean, he had his downs and was pretty much robbed by his parents. Considering that he turned out awesome. And I mean he never really pulled a lohan.
@@judsongaiden9878 I'm one month older than Mac, how mindfucking isn't hat? Btw, why hasn't anyone pointed out that Jack is a total Devin Townsend lookalike?
Angelina Jolie said in an interview a few years ago (I think during Mr. and Mrs. Smith release time) that the spinning phone booth scene was the hardest scene she has ever filmed.
right? within five minutes it's like "i really hope this dude becomes a full time part of the team, this is great stuff" this is deadass one of the best re:view eps to date
"Hacking the Gibson" HAS to be a reference to William Gibson, who wrote "Neuromancer", which practically invented the concept of hacking as a lifestyle, especially hacking corporate entities.
BTW, the game from the "foot lair" was actually a video demo of an in-production "Wipeout" which has spawned quite a few sequels. And yes, this still ranks as one of my favorite movies.
I wonder what happened to Max Landis too btw. He was accused during the whole metoo thing but then it never came to any lawsuits? What happened to Max?
@@TheLineCutter Nothing happened because no solid accusations came out. A bunch of people on twitter said they knew someone who knew someone who Max was creepy to, or they heard someone say heès an asshole to his gfs. And it made the clickbait news round for a couple days. This was like a year ago. Noone came out to straight up say he's a sex pest, so who knows.
Hackers remains a cult favorite despite its archaic technology, because of its inventive visuals and infectious energy. The film moves at a very brisk pace and seldom takes itself seriously. It's a fun movie. It reminds me of a 90s version of WarGames, which is all that it was probably intended to be.
As long as a movie focuses on being fun to watch I can tolerate just about anything, and I don't exactly consume fiction expecting it to be 1:1 with reality.
Just recently I got a Green Goblin #1 comic and there was an ad for this right on the inside of the cover and it said HACK OFF. they knew their audience lmao
I really think it is a good movie, except for well, the entire plot. But the dialogue is great and they use real terminology instead of sitcom-style technobabble crap.
@Zero Cool That's like saying because i enjoy McDonald's it's good food. It's by no means quality, but people are allowed to enjoy crap if they want, that doesn't automatically make it good.
When this movie came out on video one of my friends was going through an identity crisis and often changed himself to be a character from a movie. For several months it was Mathew Lillard from Hackers. The full outfits, the hair, manner of speaking, etc. I think the next one was Johnny Depp from Don Juan DeMarco.
Yes, if I'm not mistaken there was so many music in this movie and the soundtrack cd was popular enough for them to release a volume 2 and 3 too. 'Cowgirl' by Underworld (you hear a bit of it in this video) is great too. The entire soundtrack was pretty great at least back in the day.
@@Woozlewuzzleable"that's hilarious"... I know right?! And you can add in your own 'hack frauds' and 'is x replacing y' gags to further push it into the realm of unassailable RLM comment section comedy genius
He’s been in the public eye more often lately and seems to be doing great. You should check out his appearances on The Modern Rogue for the same kind of fun, relaxed rapport that’s here.
there is a legit reason for the seemingly over the top ridiculousness of this film. There were real life examples of literal children or dorky teenagers hacking stuff and having swat arrive , then prosecuted at the very highest levels of law, facing hypermax prison and with worldwide press attention. This was happening pretty regularly up until the 00s but in the 90s it was all the time.
Yeah, I'd say the whole "Kids hacking and fucking with people" thing is the most realistic aspect of the film. I mean, just look up "Twitch Support Compilations" and you can watch teenagers dupe people into frying their tech. Or look up the "Night of a Hundred Pizzas" greentext.
@private_johnny_rico You just pissed off all the nerds dude. Also people who are serious critics of novels. Unless you mean the book "hacked" you in a positive sense.
@private_johnny_rico I can't think of a moment while reading Snow Crash where I wasn't either fully engaged by the descriptive writing, or completely entertained by the intelligent word play and hilarious use of simile.
"I'm pretty sure bitcoins are pogs" "Is that where they all went?" -Tired of scrolling down to find out if anyone called attention to this moment of mutual brilliance
Yes this movie is so dated but the soundtrack is amazing!!!! I forgot how great it was until i rewatched this. You got Orbital, Underworld, Leftfield etc. Check it out!
Yeah, I think Mac's description of the music in the movie was a little off. He said it was all kinda techno and had a wanna-be Rage Against The Machine vibe. Orbital's music doesn't fit into either of those categories. One of my pet peeves is how pretty much all electronic music in the 90's was categorized as "techno". Also, I recall the entire soundtrack being electronic and nothing at all sounded like Rage Against The Machine type of music.
I believe the “Rage” sounding band that Mac is referring to is the band you see playing live towards the end of the movie. They were Urban Dance Squad, a Dutch band. Also, the soundtrack features like, half of the Prodigy album, “Music for the Jilted Generation”. Yes, annoying when all electronic music is called Techno. Adults, am I right? 🙄 🤣
Massive attack - Protection as well. Such a good soundtrack, yeah love these guys, but they're not really understanding of 90's English trip-hop and the underground electronic scene
Although I still love this Movie. I find myself listening to the soundtrack 100 more times than I loved the Movie. Hand in hand it's like a Marvel team up. I dont think you can have Hackers either way. You cant Have Hackers without the Soundtrack. And the soundtrack makes No sense without the Movie Hackers.
A couple years ago I came across Macaulay Culkin at a pancake house in California. This was when he had long hair etc. I knew the face from somewhere but couldn't place it the whole time I was eating breakfast. Finally he and whoever he was with got up from their booth and started to walk outside and I figured it out. So I said casually to my friend I was eating with "I think we were just sitting across from Macaulay Culkin this whole time", and I don't know if he heard me or what, because at that instant he turns around, sees me looking at him, makes this chest-bumping motion as if to say "yeah it's me, so what?" and then flashes me a double thumbs-up as he gets in his car. Totally made my day haha. Seems like a really chill dude.
The game that they play in the movie is actually a real game, it's called WipEout and it was for the original SONY PlayStation, and the footage they used in the movie was a special cut made from the game assets to advertise the game.
Okay I've been playing Watch_Dogs 2 recently and I only just noticed that when you hack the Lights in that game to green for get away's, they make the "chunk chunk" noise that they used in Hackers, Literally only just noticed that coz of this Review.
I only saw this movie once, in the 90s. Should rewatch it sometime. The names are probably the most realistic part of it. Quoting from 'The Hacker Crackdown' by Bruce Sterling (a book????): 'It should be further recognized that the members of these groups are themselves pseudonymous. If you did, in fact, run across the "PhoneLine Phantoms," you would find them to consist of "Carrier Culprit," "The Executioner," "Black Majik," "Egyptian Lover," "Solid State," and "Mr Icom." "Carrier Culprit" will likely be referred to by his friends as "CC," as in, "I got these dialups from CC of PLP."' Worth reading for people who want to get a good idea of how hacking really was in the late 80s and 90s.
He did the Joe Rogan Experience a little bit before this to promote his new site. I think he's trying to get some attention to himself (and his site) and working with online creators is the best way. Not mad at it, dude was a natural on here, I hope he starts doing his own stuff online too.
Well they had him appear briefly in Half in the Bag and now Re:View, so i'm really holding out for a best of the worst Macaulay Culkin episode. In general I love when a new Best of the Worst comes out, but that would just be brilliant.
"Handle" was the correct term .. thats what it was called in the BBS days :) Reeally .. its a perfect movie, because it absolutely nails the spirit of the culture back then, at least in your main nerd town hacker culture. Its overblown, like it has to be, but a lot of the feeling of how they spoke, and certainly the aliases they used etc, was totally right ... if you knew a bunch of Amiga crackers, you knew this movie was perfect :)
Hell, even in the later AOL and Compuserve days the word "handle" was still used. Even guys who just dealt with proggies and warez used handles that sounded like that.
17:22 It's a reference to William Gibson. One of the founding authors of the cyberpunk genre. 17:26 Those books are real. They're called the Rainbow Series. I think a lot of appreciation of this film is lost on you because it's an hour and a half ester egg intended for an audience that knows something about computer science. Is it corny? Yes. Are the graphics way over the top? Yes. But disassembling binaries is not visually exciting. The execs wanted more than us just staring at a command prompt and a text editor, so of course they had to put in crazy visuals.
Absolutely. This is a ridiculous movie. But it is chock full of real hacker / tech culture references. Seen through a drug-hazed Hollywood filter. So yeah - the guys might mock the term "handle" but that's a real thing (albeit more from BBS culture than Internet culture at the time). It's just that everything is portrayed in such an outlandish way that it seems unbelievable. I'm not sure if this film mocks hacker culture or tries too hard to celebrate it.
arandomnamegoeshere I dont think they were mocking hacker culture - the movie contains way too many legitimate references to hacker culture to be mocking it. I think they figured out early on that they were not going to do a serious movie, and everyone simply rolled with it, piling on the sillyness and cheesiness in order to make the movie as entertaining as possible.
Total guilty pleasure, great soundtrack, corny visuals and dialogue, and this was the 90s when having a PC and internet access wasn't cool. And holy shit Angelina was soooo hot back then!
This movie is 90s embodied. And pretty silly, with people magically guessing passwords, overacting, one liners, slackers and stoners... And its awesome COOL 90s ATTITUDE.
love this movie. so funny seeing what people think is cool to teenagers back then. like hiding a floppy disk with some bubble gum behind a locker. also prodigy are class.
Love the movie so much. When hes saying the names of the books, it's their common nicknames programmers use. The ANSI C book is still called "the bible."
Do you mean home alone 2: lost in new york, in cinemas november 20th 1992 starring Macaulay Culkin who plays the young boy, kevin mccallister, who gets lost in new york after getting separated from his parents at an airport and now has to defeat the same burglars who tried to ransack his home a year earlier?
I loved Lillards performance, he acted like a young kid who was absolutely stoked over living the life he lived and who wanted to give a cool impression, spot on portrayal of how kids put on an act when they're still young and haven't found themselves yet.
Always found this movie awesome and I loved the characters. Also the music was fabulous and it opened a whole new world for me.. Good stuff and I think it\s aged pretty well too.
When Macauley got married in New Preston, CT (the church near lake Waramaug) we drove by honking and mooning them as they came out... had no clue it was him
to be fair, this movie was pretty accurate on how the "Scene" was back in 94-95. the techno babble was alright, and as a stylized visual representation of what looking through a file system for data, it is better than looking at a guy throwing commands in to a *-nix terminal for 10 minutes :) I love the movie hackers, its a beautiful time capsule.. of before the internet became widespread, and the script kiddies took over :p
I saw Macauley Culkin on the Joe Rogan show and I stopped watching that episode as I didn’t enjoy any of the back and forth. However, in this I really enjoyed his presence. I hope to see him back again. This feels like a good home for him in terms of providing input. He doesn’t feel like an outsider to the show.
I can't believe that anything involving Joe Rogan would be awkward and off-putting. He's muscular, smokes weed, and knows all the secrets of quantum mechanics and how magnets work, as well as the oriental spiritual meditation techniques of the far east. The repeated head trauma has only made his neck thicker and stronger than ever before. He's basically the perfect man.
I watched the Joe Rogan podcast too and Joe wasn't being an alpha dick as some think he was, it was just a slightly awkward exchange because some of Mac Daddies jokes fell flat or went that one riff too far. Also dont forget that Review is edited whilst JRE is just camera cuts, you could edit the JRE episode to make it look like they had amazing chemistry.
