Jay is joined by Mack to discuss the 1979 street gang fantasy action movie The Warriors! Special thanks to Macaulay Culkin. Check out more of his stuff at bunnyears.com/ / bunnyearstube

A little "Warriors" trivia... Filming was primarily at night in the streets of NY which meant REAL gang members were constantly around production and they weren't too happy about the movie being made. They threw bricks, stole movie equipment, vandalized production vehicles, and even threatened actors. Finally, in an attempt to quell the situation, the studio started hiring those gang members as security to "protect" the equipment and vehicles. Many of those "extras" in the park at the concave were actual NY gang members. Roger Hill (Cyrus) was a last minute replacement. The guy who was originally hired to play Cyrus was an actual gang member and the night before filming the "Can you dig it" scene he "mysteriously disappeared" and was never seen again. Jery Hewitt (Baseball Fury leader) had 3-ribs broken accidentally while filming that fight scene with the Warriors in the park.
Hilarious that Culkin is wearing a Duchamp “Fountain” t-shirt...which was originally exhibited in front of a painting titled...”The Warriors.” Well played, sir!
I was so caught up looking up the "R. Mutt 1917" on Macaulay's shirt (reference to Duchamp's "Fountain", so literally calling himself a urinal) that I totally missed this. Thank you.
The director said in the DVD extras that he used the background story of the Spartan 300 for this movie... and he also wanted it to be more of a comic book movie so he has a directors cut with comic strip fade aways.
that villain is hilarious..warriors come out and play!...i love true villains with no chance to turn good and embracing their wicked side showing it off flaunting it in films so you know who the bad guy is and how much you should hate him and then he can just be a character rather then some redeemable anti hero or tragic figure where the film has to waste time with exposition or flashbacks to make you sympathize or see their pov...i like the true bad guys who will well they just own up to it so if they die in the end you don't have to feel any guilt or sorry for them..they brought it upon themself....love that and wish more films did that.....a show has time to redeem a villain..a movie does not
Miscellaneous Mind wouldn’t be the same without the original actors, although if they remade the game with current graphics and more stuff that would be incredible.
I would love a really cool art-house remake of the original, done in the style of like the Suspiria remake. Where you don't try and re-create it, but you take the concept and do something wildly different and imaginative with it.
It's actually based on The Anabasis by Xenophon, which chronicles a Greek mercenary army hired by Cyrus the Younger to conquer Persia, and their journey home after that goes awry. Well, the movie is based on the book (which is great btw), which in turn is based on The Anabasis
Hey Boppers, My name is Moise Morancy. I’m the writer, director and producer on this proof of concept. I also star as Cleon in this. If you’re like me, someone who appreciates and loves “The Warriors,” you know in 2005, Rockstar created a video game based on the cult classic and gave a backstory to how the gang was formed. Myself and others believe this needs to be remade as a prequel. No one can hold a candle to the originators but I wanted to pay homage and give them their flowers. Because they weren’t good…they were “the best.” I hope you enjoy! 🙏🏿
I just checked out the trailer and it looks fantastic! I really hope it goes far as I'd love to see the full version. Do you guys have a patreon or something where I can help fund it?
Hey. I went to your channel and had a look. Some aspects are impressive but there are a few issues that could be improved upon, the most glaring one being the editing. You need to shorten the video by a couple of minutes and mix the dialogue better with some of the visuals. You also need a second unit, doing pick-up shots. You could really do something special with a few more changes here and there. Also, some of the actors aren't great, so it does occasionally look amateurish. Overall, though, it looks like an interesting project.
I discovered The Warriors through the Playstation 2 game based on it. Me and my friend watched the film, and holy moly were we blown away. It's a perfect combination of low-budget creative corniness, as well as some really clever film-making and ambience/world building. One of the best soundtracks ever made, too.
All jokes aside, these guys nailed it. The warriors is such a great film. Underrated. That scene with the prom kids on the subway might be my favorite from it.
He did turn up as a character on Babylon 5 one episode. Man, I wouldn't mind seeing RLM do a re:view on B5. Maybe a series of the weirder sci-fi shows of the 90s like Lexx and Earth2
Porcupinel I imagine a lot of 70s stars have this feeling in some way or another. If you were young and in some hit film, I bet it was relatively easy to be suckered into some schlock film that tanks your career.
The beginning of The Warriors is always my go-to example on how to start a movie, the whole movie is great but the about seven minute long prologue is just perfection.
@@Jishere232 I did research, this is untrue. He’s also lived in a 3 million dollar apartment in Manhattan since 1999. Which he bought outright. He doesn’t worry about rent or a mortgage. And I’m sure that apt is worth more now too.
@@Zancoth remember having a trailer for the game on a pcgames disc. Probably watched that video 50 times. Watched Spoony play the game many years ago. He had some good long letsplays..
I owned that game briefly when I was a kid. Could never get it to actually run on any of my PC's though!! Phantasmagoria was another great FMV game. Favourite period of gaming for me!
You nailed it, the Sentient Mustard! Both films have enormous atmosphere and stylish filmmaking, but Snake Plissken and the characters he encounters are so much more entertaining and worth rooting for than Blade Runner's. Escape From New York has style, humor and heart.
@Dangerz Own its basically a cyberpunk western. John Carpenter only had like 14 million to make it in a burned out part of St Louis. Definition of badass. My bad it was only 6 million dollar budget
Completely agree. Nothing makes me smile more than watching him talk about movies and video games. It's even better when I'm not looking for him but somehow find him organically.
They had a thing on the local news here in Milwaukee about a week ago about how Macaulay Culkin has been sighted here multiple times over the past few months. Apparently he's been visiting us quite a bit here
@@jimm7346 Honestly since Mac is just doing his website...I see no reason why he wouldn't become a semi-permanent member. Clearly, they have eluded to the RLM guys hanging out with him outside of just the filming.
I'd love to see the Safdie Brothers (Good Time, Uncut Gems) direct a remake. They understand New York, gritty filmmaking, tense races against time, chase scenes, colorful characters, and would likely put a terrifying spin on the gangs, grounding them in a bit more believable circumstance.
I love The Warriors I was standing behind a guy in a store wearing a Warriors vest and I said Warriors come out to playayyy. He turns with this surprised look on his face
They shot the Turnbull AC's school bus scene in my neighborhood, East New York, Brooklyn. I was around 7 or 8yrs old. And every gang at the time would head over to the set to try to get in that scene. It was crazy.
The novel it's based on was based on the Ancient Greek Anabasis of Xenophon. It recounts Xenophon's expedition to Persia to help Cyrus the younger seize the throne, but the plot fails and the Greeks have to fight their way out of Persia with literally everyone trying to kill them.
They understated just how lore building the game was. The movie part of the game is short compared to the rest of the game which is all about events prior to the movie. They even had 5 flashback missions to show how each member joined
There was a video game based on The Warriors by Rockstar Games (the creators of GTA, Red Dead Redemption, Manhunt, and many great games) It was a good game.
im 22 so a 00s kid but grew up with the older times so i watched this movie for the first time when i was just a kid on my grandparents VHS copy of the film, loved it ever since
I was given The Warriors on VHS by a nextdoor neighbor back when I was a kid in the 90s but I didn't watch it fully through till I was 11 and I was obsessed with it, I even got the PS2 game back in 05 and even got the soundtrack, it's a classic man.
Recently downloaded it from the PSN store, I think I was about 14 when it came out, bloody amazing game. I remember my Da had the movie on VHS when I was wee, was amazed by the artwork on the cover. One of my favourite movies definitely, I hate what Walter Hill did with the directors cut. Why Walter? Why? By the way, another great movie of his, The Long Riders.
Very cool and fun video fellas. On the subject of the Baseball Furies: in Greek literature the Erinyes (also known as the Furies) were underworld deities who would take vengeance on those who had sworn a false oath. Seems fitting as in their understanding of the situation the Warriors came in under a banner of truce and foreswore their oath by killing Cyrus. That the Furies were unable to take down the Warriors is a sign of their innocence.
I believe the furies would take vengeance on those who committed a blood crime, as in killing a family member. Which was basically the worst crime you could commit in the Greek world.
Mac's understanding of cinema and movie culture is pretty deep. I could hang out with this guy. Not because he's famous but because we could talk for days. I'm glad he's turned his life around. He's everywhere now. Kudos to him.
At first i didnt like the game, but when you discover that the movie is the Climatic finale of the game, it rocks. Beat it all in one Blockbuster weekend rental
My dad always has had the biggest hard on for this film as far back as I remember. He saw it in theaters when it first came out. And honestly, I've always respected him for that. This movie is fucking great.
Mac seems like a dude who is both smart and chill at the same time. If I ever run into him when he’s out somewhere, I hope he’d let me buy him a beer and chat for 10 mins.
This movie is based off the Anabasis (March to the Sea) by Xenophon, not the Odyssey. Cyrus is a reference to Cyrus the younger, a usurper prince who United the western satrapies against his older brother Artaxerxes. Cleon is Clearchus, the Spartan mercenary who’d assumed command of the Greek mercenary band known as the 10,000, only to be assassinated when negotiating his surrender after Cyrus the Younger’s death. Just as the Anabasis ends with the 10,000 arriving at the Greek ruled shores of Trebizond, the warriors ends with them reaching the coast at Coney Island.
It might be structurally based on the Anabasis but it draws at least a tad from the Odyssey/Iliad There's literally a guy named Ajax Mac also has a good point about the Sirens
@@kakroom3407 there’s references to the Iliad/odyssey, but the baseline of the story and setting is clearly based on the Anabasis. All the gangs just represent the various mountain tribes and local armies the 10,000 had to fight their way through to reach the sea.
Yes!!! We need a re:View for The Return!! I do wonder if Jay is avoiding it because he isn’t quite sure what to make of season 3. You could probably spend 4 hours just talking about theories for it
the last time i saw mcaulay culkin was back in the 90s, then saw a few pictures of him and thought we lost him, but hell, he's cooler than ever. great chemistry guys, hey Mac! Nice to see you so chill and happy! Big hugs man!
Fun fact is that this movie is a loose adaptation of (among other things) an Ancient Greek historical event where 10,000 Greeks are hired as mercenaries by the brother of the Persian king to help him usurp the throne. They march all the way from Greece to the middle of the Persian Empire to fight a battle, but during it the brother dies and the 10,000 Greeks pretty much have to fight there way back to Greece through 1,000s of miles of hostile territory. Similar premise and some of the characters are the same. Plus the brother's name is also Cyrus
Started playing with bottles on the mean streets of Coney Island, had a couple of brief conversations with Schwarzenegger, helped run a brothel in the Pacific Northwest... now he's a cleaner for John Wick. I'd say that was a pretty full life, and a damn fine cup of coffee.
20:05 "Warrior's come out to play" was actually something that actor's neighbor used to do in his old apartment building back in those days. He said as much in an interview.
Ralph Bakshi movies contain some good elements of guerrilla filmmaking. Some of the dialogue in Fritz the Cat was recorded from bars and street corners in the Bronx.
Watched this movie literally 100+ times. It was my first VHS tape as a 13 year old. Disagree about fight scenes being poor, especially the battle in the bathroom. Well done. Great stuff. The video game was a wonderful homage and the last hour of the game (that portion being an elaboration of the movie) was fantastic. Tons of great music and as I recall much from the soundtrack. ALSO had voice overs by some of the cast.
It took me for it to click that this was Culkin, he's just so chill and happy that he get's to talk about movies. You sometimes forget actors are real people to.
Jay once said he learned some of the basics of editing from watching Home Alone. Now he is in a video(which he probably edited) reviewing a movie with the guy who starred in Home Alone. he has come full circle.
I saw The Warriors for the first time on betamax when I was like 14 in the early 80s and loved it - when I saw the director's cut years later with all the comic book graphics I didn't like it, I preferred the original version
