Basically I don't really know a lot about computers, but the one "hack" I understand, and thus find abnormally fascinating, is dialing a rotary-dial-telephone by disconnecting the line exactly 200ms. It's what the rotary does when rotating back into it's default position, and thus the phone can tell the number you dialed by the number of disconnects. It's called pulse dialing, and you can simulate it with a bit of training. Utterly fascinating, because it's very basic, but a nice example of a creative use of tech - which is what hacking basically is.

I used to dial a sequence of numbers on a pay phone called a ringback. 660… The pay phone would ring and we would prank our classmates to pick it up.

I've watched a documentary on this exact topic. And the author made an interesting note by distinguishing between hackers and cr**kers (I think youtube auto-bans my comment). A hacker is a highly skilled computer hobbyist. Think of Richard Stallman, founder of the FSF, who is a self proclaimed "last MIT hacker", but who (to my knowledge) never "hacked" a single machine in his life. Cr**kers on the other hand are the one who we think of when we say "hacker", people who use their computer skills to compromise software in order to make money.

I know this is kind of irrelevant to the video, but a few days ago my pc got a trojan on it and now whenever i try to log into stuff on my phone i get a mesagge from a suspicious phone number with a 2FA code. Im wondering how the hacker knows im logging into something on another device than i got hacked on. Also i only get 2FA from weird numbers instead of instagram, facebook, epic games etc.

Very good explanation of the history, however I have one comment, the spelling is 'phreak', short for 'phone freak' Although, while I get that 'corn flakes' is generic term for breakfast cereals across the pond, this is still a very weird sentence to my North American ears, "Enclosed in a box of Cap'n Crunch corn flakes'
@jijinazul.

so if I'm right, hacking is more of beating the system or cracking the code in different situations rather than a movie of a character wearing a black jacket and a anonymous mask using a computer with the color palette of the user interface is just neon green and black.

@Sumsubcom
@Sumsubcom 2 года назад
source?
@GoonSmith007
@GoonSmith007 2 года назад
@@Sumsubcom Only real source is I'm old :) Phrack issue 1 and early 2600 issues were already using the term Phreak and never gave an origin. I've just always thought it came from phone hacker as it fits. The use of ph as a replacement for f pre-dates phat so shortening phone rather that replacing an f seems logical. History of phone phreaking "more-on-origin-of-phreak.html" page suggests it was spelt with an f originally and adopted the ph in the 1971 esquire magazine article you also reference. So maybe it was just a cleaver play on the term freaks meaning enthusiasts. Noting though that article in Esquire also just starts using the term with no background on it's origin, the history blog is suggesting only this is the earliest use of the ph version they could find. As noted in that blog as well the reference to use of the term 'phreek' in 1971, lending weight as well that it could be a play on phone and free by some people. Either way I guess I have no hard source, just what I've always 'known'. Thank you for reminding me to challenge my beliefs, although I'm still no more certain of the origin either way.
