Just to vent to my vegan community: I came across a video from a channel that I followed for personal growth and inspiration but they have branched into health topics. They had a video about being young fit and healthy forever. The "doctor" was quoted early on saying that you have to eat a ridiculous amount on a plant based diet and compared quinoa and chicken breast. I don't know if we are ever going to properly educate the majority of people because of these propagated misconceptions. When I'm talking about plant based diets My parents still throw in "there are some things missing" it's like the information can't get past previous biases.
Hi, there is an incredible bias against veganism in the omnivore world. It is true, studies show vegans in general are low or deficient in many nutrients which we need to pay attention to. I think this is the main reason for "failed vegans". However, the omnivore diet (and carnivore, keto, etcetera) are also low (or deficient in) several nutrients, but you never hear about this from critics of veganism. How about having your parents watch several of Dr. Greger's videos, and getting your parents to get a blood test and show them they are far from perfect!. I have been vegan 20+ years and humans are fearful of changing, especially away from animal flesh and blood. Here are some examples.....cheers pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26502280/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34069944/ nutritionfacts.org/video/omnivore-vs-vegan-nutrient-deficiencies-2/
I don't know why but I found you very endearing in this video. You would make such a good professor, the way you talk and make complicated subject matter much easier to understand and digest. And you make it interesting with humor and a lightness about you. Glad people like you exist in the world.
I learned a lot as always! Thank you for all of your hard work over the years Mic. All of your nutritional science has really helped me shut down all of the annoying criticisms of my diet and lifestyle that meat heads throw at me, and I've even changed a few minds: all thanks to your information! Keep up the hard work my friend!
So excited to see this vid, Mic. I had a friend buy me Sinclair's book, Lifespan. Such a wonderful read. Look forward to hearing what you have to say!!
I love how you spend hours and hours reviewing all these studies and then you're nice enough to thank us for watching less than a 30 minute video. I have listened to a few of David Sinclair's videos. Great constructive criticism and review of his points.
Thanks for your thoughtful, well researched videos, Mic. While I'm not yet totally plant-based, it's content like this that encourages me to keep plugging away.
Thanks for doing this video Mic. Grateful for all your research. I agree, staying away from drugs for longer life and being on a meatless whole foods diet is the magic pill for a longer lifestyle. I started a healthy lifestyle at 20 with meatless diet and mountain biking for over 35 years/ being 65 now with a BMI of 21 and a BP of 110/65 and resting HR of 47. And living longer now than most of my my grandparents who died of strokes and heart disease. Except for one grandmother who lived to be 98 because she also lived a healthy low meat lifestyle. I can truly testify that the lifestyle you have researched is truly the path to take. I look forward to many more years because of it. And I encourage anyone who wants to stay healthy and off of debilitating drugs and heart surgery when you get older to follow the lifestyle Mic has given us completely. And as to NAD and Sirtuins are stimulated form Sulpherphane found in high levels from broccoli and kale. I put a lot in my smoothies every morning.
Thank you , I’ve listened to Dr. Sinclair many times and have maintained a healthy skepticism. It’s very interesting research that he’s doing but if something is tested on mice it doesn’t necessarily translate to humans. He does seem a little too focused on supplements and really doesn’t know much about nutrition either. You are the only one that has pointed out these flaws. ✌🏻🌱
Great video. Very thought-provoking especially about metformin. I would love to see a study on longevity on people who eat a WFPB diet comparing those who took metformin and those who didn't. I am waiting for those results before starting to take metformin myself as I am not diabetic.
So glad to see that ur channel has grown quite a bit! I remember how, 3 years ago, it had way too little attention for how good the info already had been. Keep spreading the truth brother, cuz you’re changing the world for the better.
Still in my thirties, and just hoping I get to test these someday.... Animal ag is destroying the planet so fast that I fear ecosystem collapse will actually be what determines our "longevity".... Vegans need to be deeply concerned with the environment (everyone does) but more so *environmentalists absolutely need to adopt veganism!* Enjoyable video buddy, keep it up!
It's kind of a myth that animal agriculture is bad though, people always say they take a lot of water, but a lot of the water they take is actually just peed out onto the ground. It's not like if they drink 100 gallons of water they just keep it the whole time. They only keep what they need to maintain body weight. Same with the whole methane argument, it's really not as bad as people say. The real pollution problem comes from China and India these days. Especially huge plastic issues. I would say though, pasture raised farming is preferred. I would love to get rid of any corporitization of the food system. It would help farmers be free and not in debt. Also just keeping animals in feeding lots is horrible. You have to understand though these studies on meat are limited, we don't actually know if eating meat is as bad as a lot of vegans say. Eating bad processed meat sure, but a lot of studies on meat are following people who also smoke and make a bunch of other bad lifestyle decisions. People who are vegan are usually more health conscious and don't smoke etc.
@@Hoppensagen you should look at the studies on land use.... they explain we could rewild an area the size of Russia back into natural biodiverse habitat, which would really help with both carbon absorption and stabilizing the climate. It would also help slow the mass extinctions already underway. But really, it's the whole impact of all these things put together, not just one variable. Land is by far the big one when it comes to animal agg though. People still act like we have no limits to our consumption and I still see people throw trash out the window and find it pretty much everywhere. We are just too stupid to realize we're killing our beautiful planet through our everyday decisions, and food is the biggest factor in that. We get terrified over a bad cold spreading around, but can't see the very obvious things we've done that are making the ecosystem break down. And somehow we think we'll just move to Mars if it gets real bad, which is even more absurd. I'm not sure we deserve this paradise and soon it'll be too late to do anything about the damage we've done
@@Runpierre the benefit listed is relative, not absolute, and the longterm side effects are not good. It's just a well-marketed product sold to doctors who don't know any better. Watch Dustin Rudolph and John McDougall on this.
It's insane how many doctors are taking metformin for anti-aging. Ok, well, maybe not that insane -for them- since they are so obsessed with pharmaceuticals and not that into total body health. SMH. I've heard diabetes patients go on and on about side effects. So not worth it, we don't know enough. They just did a recall on a few metformin generics for cancer risk.
I wish I could like it everytime I watch it. Great job to condense those complex information in such a great video! I have watched all of Sinclairs talks and find his topic and findings fascinating. Will continue to follow his findings!
Dr Greger's book, How not to diet, explains at great length that you can activate AMPK without exercise - just take 2 tablespoons of vinegar per day (it doesn't have to be ACV)
The way you can research all of this is truly incredible!! Great video. Literally would never have come across some of the stuff you said if i wasnt subscribed to you. Thank you for that.
Thank you for always making this information digestible!!!! And for linking all studies that you reference!!! You put soooo much hard work into these videos and I hope you know how appreciative I am!!! 🌳🌿🌱
Your explanations and research are 10X better than almost all doctors (incl those on youtube) who just repeat the findings of his research and aren’t practical in application at all. Thank you for doing what you do.
😊😊😊 This video made me smile even more that the others. Thanks. Lots of witty amusing touches sprinkled right through, and of course your own smiles seen often too. 👍. Clearly a huge amount of research. Plenty for the viewer to digest. Or to try. Somehow I too would rather concentrate on and improve/correct if possible things like diet, exercise, sleep rather than chugging down supplements. Though I'm 62 to your 30. Yes exercise is my weak spot too... must do something about it. Anyhow, thanks again for an informative and very enjoyable video though it did keep my mind on its toes to keep up with all the knowledge.
Great video Mic, and agreat quote too! "The best strategy for animals (for increased longevity) is not to eat animals". I'll be citing you so much this week. Best regards ^^
An alternative to Metformin would be Berberine. It increased lifespan in mice and is available as a supplement. However, there are many things that might increase lifespan (such as exercise, healthy weight, nuts, Omega 3, garlic, tea, coffee, berries, Chlorella, ginger etc).
That was an amazingly informative vid on anti-aging! Thanks!! Sometimes its far simpler than most think, eat WFPB and keep a good weight as well as sleep. Mental and emotional health is a big one too. All those supplements may not be assimilated to the body and it could end up being damaging more than good? I used to take well over 50 supplements a day while really serious about training weights but now with more studies I realize too much is not better.and presently take far less, the minimum, and feel great!
Pretty much everything you can find in supplements, you will find in real foods. But with real foods you get the complete package, meaning better absorption and utilization. Also much cheaper.
I'm 70 now. My father died at 44. One grandfather at 53. I take no medications and try to be a vegan, especially when I can fully control my diet. Your video's are great, as most of us do not understand all the science. But since I stopped working, exercise has decreased, as I used to bike or walk to work. So ... daily exercise...
As I recall the summary of the study on the Okinawan diet shown in your chart did conclude that they were very active physically and at that time were in a 200 calorie a day deficit according to their calculations. I model my own diet after this evolutionarily proven diet which jives with all the science we now have so I am familiar with the chart intimately, and my own personal observation has been that on some days when I drop to 1500 calories from their 1750 average I feel even better than if I grab the nuts and add extra 200 calories or more. And yet my body weight remains fairly consistent. The Okinawan diet is VERY efficient. Also, inexpensive at about $6 a day for me. Another critical factor in that same data brings up the notion that not all calories are created equal where the human body is concerned. The "O" chart indicates an incredibly low fat intake of 6 percent and 9 percent protein with about 85 percent carbs. Without the fat to gum up the works the mitochondria and other cell functions are extremely efficient. In addition, the Okinawans embraced the idea of eating til 8/10ths full which is suggestive of calorie restriction as a lifestyle. Add to this that they drank green tea all day which I find to give a pleasant anorexia. As far as eating disorders these longest living people enjoyed being hungry at times of the day as I have found by eating the way they did. This is not an eating disorder but simply observing a sensation that monk's have known for millennia which is that to really enjoy something you must experience some emptiness and enjoy that as well. Everything I have learned about the Okinawans leads me to believe they were physically active a good bit of the day although not running track or at the gym, they ate sparingly a diet of mostly sweet potatoes, rice and vegetables, they drank green tea and they lived on an island that was somewhat isolated and probably were exposed to very few damaging viral diseases that would have infected the cities in the mainland areas. Certainly the idea of drugs would have been unthinkable to these people as it should be to us all. We live in a medical matrix and few see true reality where health is concerned. Like chumps taking street drugs we are fooled too often by profiteering drug pushers and peddlers of misinformation.
I had heard a lot about these different pathways cause I'd seen many interviews with doctor Longo. But I forgot what most of the acronyms stand for, so thanks for refreshing my mind.
Dear Mic, I just found your channel and I'm already deep in love with it. I would like to understand more about the sirtuins signalling pathway: activation, regulation, downstream effects. I was looking into it as linked with calorie restriction, but I just found a lot of reference to NAD and resveratrol. Could you address me to some material explaining this pathway and its correlation to CR? Thank you so much in advance, Roberto.
I am following David Sinclairs protocol I am 65, I have been watching you for a few years now,I went total vegan for one year I wanted it to work for me, but it killed my gut and I think gave me a slight case of IBS. now I fast 16 to 18 hours a day, calorie restrict and eat a more ketogenic diet, things are better for me, thats all I wanted to say,,and thanks for your videos I believe you help people..
Thanks for sharing. I think being a vegan have me candida it was scary - once I eat meat my digestion gets good again.. I wish I could eat plant based but the meat does the trick I guess..
@@ganapatikitty I promise you it's only because your body is so used to your current way of eating. Anyone can eat plant based👍🏻😁 it's all about how you transition.
I have diabetes type 2 and I decided not take insulin or pills for treatment like a 2 months ago I started this vegan diet got my diabetes decreased from 300 to 143 and it’s still working out and I am 54 in old and feel wonderful
@Mic the Vegan Dr Gregor has a chapter in How Not to Diet called "Amping AMPK". (Not only does AMPK activation correlate with better mortality outcomes in people, it also appears to contribute to visceral fat loss.) Gregor talks about nicotine from veggies (pepper, tomatoes and other nightshades), acetic acid (from SCFA produced by gut flora -- go fiber! -- or vinegar in the diet), and barberries as some of the ways to amp AMPK. If you want to follow your current research rabbit hole even farther the book has 5000 references (!) listed for free on the nutrition facts site. The citations for the Amping AMPK chapter are 2564 - 2680.
I remember watching an interview that Tom aka the most tired looking man on earth that wants to live forever did with him. He gets compliments for looking younger than his age, but I’m sure he’s had cosmetic surgery done...
Just an anecdote: I did a fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) for 5 days a while ago. I lost a bit of weight, but didn't lose any muscle. In fact, my first aerobic exercise after the FMD, was great. I took a vitamin supplement, of course. I will definitely keep trying it, since, although it was hard, the autophagy and loss of fat but increase in lean muscle mass, does feel good. I did do yoga and meditation and ate healthy, in-between. Love your vids and humor, Mic. Good work! I'll set some green tea and coffee now
Well I have watched so many Sinclair interviews over the past year, even ordered his book and am still reading it. I've also heard Dr Rhonda Patrick talk about the same topics. Nothing against them two, but your summary of all of these topics is so much clearer. Now it may help that you don't have Joe Rogan interrupting and trying to steer the convo, but still, this is such a clean presentation.
I listened to Sinclaire, he seems like a nice smart guy. I felt good that he said he eats predominantly plant based, at least he's not on some high protein or keto bullshit, which makes him at least more credible. Good points, Mike! David also said other interesting things that combat aging, like brown fat in your body, saunas
I really enjoyed this video, I am grateful for the energy you put forward to create it. I learned a lot and also achieved a better understanding of information that I was familiar with. Thank you, Mic.
Wow you did a lot of work on this. Really appreciate it, especially since I just came across Sinclair and his groupies within the past two weeks. Have watched a couple of his videos, but naturally, yours' explain the process in easier and more complete terms than Sinclair. I'm 68 (34 yr. vegan and healthy), but not running out to buy his stuff until his theories have more studies and proof. Plus, every time I see Sinclair, I get the same gut reaction as when I see Dr. Oz. Just sayin'.
Great Vid as always Mic, I will definitely need to watch this one again as there is much to take in. Interesting about the height/ longevity connection.
Another great video Mic, but I must admit that it might have exceeded my short attention span ;) Have you read Dr Gregers "How Not to Diet" book yet? He discusses AMPK in it. Thanks again for all your hard work and research.
Interesting that you mentioned Okinawans right after talking about thigh muscle mass and mortality correlating with the ability to stand from a sitting position. Okinawan centenarians usually live in traditional Japanese homes with very little furniture. They sit on mats on the floor. Just going about their daily lives requires getting up from a sitting position on the floor about 30 times a day. (Maintains good balance and thigh muscle mass.) Westerners tend to spend the majority of our time sitting in chairs. (We have poor posture, neck and back problems, and we lose lower body strength and develop poor balance. This leads to more falls and bone fractures.
Great video. Very impressed with the amount of work you put in. How could anyone not be? Metformin has potential side-effects BUT must people on it seem to experience none.
