UPDATE!: I was wrong in the video... You will need a power supply with more amps to run this thing correctly. Just like the Gen 1. Use an Apple iPad wall plug, or use the one from the Gen 1 video I've added to the Parts Needed list below.
In this video I cover the method to disable the onboard Petnet WiFi control system in a Gen 2 feeder and install a new WiFi Control board from Amazon. You definitely don't get all the fancy bells and whistles that the original Petnet system provided, but then again, their systems haven't been very reliable lately...
Parts Needed:
WiFi Board: amzn.to/3g0377o
6" of 18 Gauge wire: amzn.to/2Zc9ApP
Power Supply: amzn.to/2zGbrJ2
Tools Needed:
Wire Cutters/snips: amzn.to/34UeVVv
T10 Torx screwdriver: amzn.to/2ENSMh1
OPTIONAL (but recommended):
Wire Stripper: amzn.to/2WI8Uac
Velco or double sided stick tape to secure the board.
If you have any questions please let me know...
This video is for entertainment and informational purposes and I take no responsibility if you choose to do this to your own hardware.

An important update for everyone! I was wrong when I stated this generation of feeder would not require a new power supply. In fact, to operate correctly it will need a new power supply like an Apple iPad charger or the one recommended in the Gen 1 video. I'll put the link in the description above. My apologies.

Thank you for this! Working well for me. Just changed the inching setting to 20 seconds to get enough food dispensed for my dog. Really appreciate it!

Thank you so much for this recommendation, I would have never thought about taking this approach. I added one of those WiFi boards for my gate but thanks to you I’ll add it to my feeder.

I understand they are used for garage doors quite a bit as well. Glad it’s something that might help.

Thank you for doing this! I ordered my parts just now. This week's Project for my Gen 1 and 2. My dogs will be so happy!

Thank you - it worked and was able to put my cats on a regulated diet (they were getting overweight). I found that 5 second run delivers about 3/4 cup of cat food. I bet a different size of cat food will produce different results. I had to calibrate the time to the amount of food.
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 3 года назад
Yes that’s exactly what we all have to do. But once you have it dialed in it works fairly well. 5 seconds? Seems like a lot but maybe you have bigger food or more cats lol

Thanks for the info. I grabbed a 4 channel relay and set different inching times so I can have 4 different portions.

My next add-on is adding a remote button so the front button can work.

Yeah that’s definitely an option but only if get a different board. Thanks for commenting. I want other people to know there are options out there and not to just junk these machines. 👍

Thanks for doing this and sharing your work! Quick question: Does this hack now require two power supplies, the original to power the motors and one you listed in the description to power the new wifi board?
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 3 года назад
No problem. And the new WiFi board is going to run the motors directly. So you only need one power supply which runs the board which powers the motors. The single power supply you use needs to have the right voltage (5V) and enough amps (at least 2 amps) to run everything correctly.

@Allen Sampsell, Thank you so much for this hack, it's awesome. I'm curious though, would it be significantly more difficult to program a new chip, desolder the old one and solder the new programmed chip onto the board?
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 3 года назад
I suppose if you know how to program a new chip that would fit on their board and make the software to go with it. It’s possible. But infinitely more hard than just replacing it. There is another option out there using a Raspberry Pi but again it’s a whole other level and price point as Pi’s aren’t cheap like the board I’ve chosen.

Hi Allen! Seems I’m unable to adjust the inching time to reflect the motor running. I tried doing the separate power supply but still runs 7-8 seconds no matter the setting when the motor power supply is put into the NO position. Thoughts? It I unplug the motor the relay works perfectly- so I think it has something to do with the board on the motor. Thoughts?
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 3 года назад
after you trigger the feeder does it spin for that long time and then the board turns off then back on? You'd have to watch the lights on the board... If that is still the case then the new power supply you used probably doesn't have enough amps.
@kayand43
@kayand43 3 года назад
Well done, this works great. Was wondering about the power supply. I am currently using the one supplied and it doesn't have any issues. Am I going to run into issues with that?
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 3 года назад
Unfortunately yes, you’re probably having issues now and just don’t realize it. Symptoms will be that the Inching doesn’t appear to work. It will just spin for the same amount of time and then it reboots. Easier to see it rebooting if you test this while it’s apart and you can watch the lights.

we should build a multi-dispense for kennels and vets... imagine allowing them to bulk load (bulk buy cheaper) a few different dry food options, define kennel/stall numbers and enable smart routing in a gravity feed system that diverts the kibble to wherever it is required based on location and selected food type... or build for larger chicken farms and otherwise to send supplemental nurients to appropriate stalls/animals... heck make it for my house and just put soilent green in there and put tube above my pc and I'm g2g

What about if the petnet app don't work no even to create a new account? And i never have an account with them can i use the app from the new board?
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 2 года назад
The new board has it's own app. Nothing to do with the original company.

Wow, your project is amazing. I am a CS student and I am interested in how does it work? Why would a small wifi module solve the problem?
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 3 года назад
The unit already had wifi and a controller that made the motor turn. The new wifi module essentially replaced the manufacturers and now directly controls the motor which dispenses food. It doesn't do all the things the original did, but it does work.

So cool. Their server is down for months, and we can not control anything from the App, so it's time to hack it.
