Hardware Hacking the Petnet Feeder (Generation 1)

In this video I go over a method to replace the Petnet.io feeder electronics with a different app enabled WiFi board which will directly control the motor. Using this method you set the Inching setting in the e-welink app to determine the amount of seconds the motor spins, which determines the amount of food that comes out. You set a schedule and each of those scheduled times the inching setting is used. You will need some hardware from Amazon to make this happen. (It's also a great project to do with your kids.) There are pros and cons... No more Petnet app. It would tell you when the food bin is empty... You won't get that. But you won't have to pay Petnet $30 a year to use hardware you already bought from them (that should work).
Don't forget to Like the video and please Subscribe! :)

Just breathed new life into my V1 a little while ago! I ran into an interesting issue where my 5V inverter didn't have the juice to power both the chip and the motor. It would trigger the motor, the chip would power off, and it would take ~5 seconds to boot back up, upon which it would turn off the motor. I thought I had it wired wrong and kept rechecking my configuration. Tried a 2.1A power supply and that fixed it! Thanks for the tutorial.

Glad it’s working again for you too. And that’s exactly what I noticed was happening when you just use the standard 5V 1A charger that comes with the PetNet. Just not enough amps

Thank you so much, I was able to get 1 of my Gen1 up and running no problem. Will see how it works for a few days and then order some more of the Wifi boards to do the other Gen1s and Gen2s I've got. Only alternate I did was drill a hole into the unit and screw the Wifi board into the base. I tried cutting the power wires closer as recommended but still couldn't reach that slot/gap to put the board in. But then I turned over the unit, heard the board move around and decided to pin it down. Might be worth it just in case you have to reopen it for whatever reason.

Glad it's working out. Just make sure you use a new power supply. At least 2.1 Amps and you'll be good to go.

Can you PLEASE do one of these for the second generation? I loved this machine until it stopped working...will definitely do this if it will work for gen 2.

How do you adjust the feeding amount? I know you said amount has to be same for each feeding, but how do you set that specified feeding amount?
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 3 года назад
In the ewelink app go to the device and go to Device Settings. Find "Inching Settings". Turn it on and set the Inching duration. I use 2.5 seconds but you'll have to adjust based on how much you want coming out. A big factor is the size of the food you use...

Hi Allen, thanks for sharing. I setup according your instructions. However, the inching function is not working for me no matter what I set, the motor turns for 5s. Any thoughts?
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 3 года назад
Hi. Yes. That sounds like the issue that is caused by not using a new power supply with at least 2.1 amps. What power supply are you using?
@josephdge
@josephdge 3 года назад
@@AllenSampsell thanks for the reply. I’m used the same power supply that came with my gen1 petnet feeder. Input 0.2A output 5V 1.0A. You’re saying I would need an output 5V 2.1A?
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 3 года назад
@@josephdge Yes. You've got it. The original power supply does not have enough amps to run the board properly. Once you replace it the inching settings will behave normally. There is an affiliate link for a suitable power supply in the description of the video. But there are many options out there.... You can even test with an Apple iPad power supply (if it's the right kind) just to see that this will work. If you have one of course.

So you have done the upgrade via the video and are trying to setup an ewelink account? You should be able to setup an account with ewelink even before you turn on the new wifi board. Yes it still works. You use your WiFi/internet only to program the schedule into the board.

I finally got around to doing this to mine I was holding out for a software solution for years, but it never actually happened. Mine is ONLY giving "snack" portions with every cycle and doesn't seem to be honoring the inching settings. I AM using the universal power adapter linked. I wonder if they maybe changed the board or the power supply?
@plasticlobster23
@plasticlobster23 7 месяцев назад
Also it doesn't appear to be powering off with every feeding. I can hammer the button and give as many "snacks" as I want. I wonder if I got a defective board.
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 7 месяцев назад
@@plasticlobster23 A defective board is a possibility. And honstly I've not used this system in so long they might have changed the settings. However, those inch settings are pretty integral to the flexibility of operating the system so I doubt they'd mess it up that bad. Hope you can get it working again... Loved that little feeder.
@plasticlobster23

@@AllenSampsell I just decided to schedule 3 snacks a minute apart instead of a full meal. It works out about the same, lol. Maybe I'll grab another board and switch it out, but considering this is working, and I can say "Hey google, turn on the cat feeder" to give her another snack, I'll probably just let this go for now. Appreciate the reply, though.

How how many amps does the power wall adapter need?
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 3 года назад
Amps? I can only tell you more than 1 but less than 3. The power supply that I recommend from Amazon auto regulates the amps.
@jkennedy2261
@jkennedy2261 3 года назад
Allen Sampsell do you think a 5v 2 amp usb wall adapter should work? Trying to avoid the need to buy that plug if I have a 2amp one laying around. How would I know if it wasn’t proving enough power?
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 3 года назад
@@jkennedy2261 Give it a shot. If you have the inching mode set to say 2 seconds and it the motor only spins that long you're probably good to go. It shouldn't hurt to test it. Also, if you have the unit open and you hit the feed button you might see that it looses wifi and reconnects. That's a dead give away that you aren't giving it enough.

Hi Allen, thank you for your video. I just got one at an unbelievable price without knowing the app died. Too good to be true, I guess. I followed all the steps you pointed, but, when it’s time to run the motor, the board only ticks the relay but nothing happens to the motor itself. The ticks last for as long as the inching time. Im using the power supply you suggested. Do you have any idea why? Thank you!
@AllenSampsell
@AllenSampsell 2 года назад
I can’t say for certain because there are too many things that could be wrong. But it could be as simple as the motor already being blown.
@afonsonegromonte1532
@afonsonegromonte1532 2 года назад
@@AllenSampsell I thought so too, but I just tested the motor directly into the 5v and it’s working. The only thing I did differently than your video is to, instead of buying a new different wire, I used the spare wiring I got after snipping the petnet’s. Could it possibly be it?
@AllenSampsell

@@AllenSampsell Yup, worked like a charm. I think you can shorten the video/instructions significantly or possibly include a message at the beginning (or text overlay) as to when the actual instructions start.
