This video will be talking about how Star Fox Assault handles the new gameplay mechanic of entering and exiting the Arwring and Landmaster. We will cover topics such as flag, loaded assets, stage collision, and force entering/exiting all 3 unique Arwings and the Landmaster. We will also go over some fun facts. It was a rocky development, but it's finally out.
If you are interested in replicating what I did in the video, I made gecko codes to easily do just that.
For this video specifically check out this google doc: docs.google.com/document/d/1c...
If you want to explore other Gecko Codes check out this folder: drive.google.com/drive/folder...

This was super cool and very informative. Star Fox Assault was one of my favourite video games and I always wondered how collision worked on many of those flight-only levels. I couldn't have imagined it would be so complex, but it does make sense! I look forward to any more information you end up figuring out!

Superb job. This is, like, just what I was looking for as right now I was modding Star Fox Assault the Corneria level. Because as a kid I remember being let down when they sent the Arwing to join the air battle after completing the ground mission but the Arwing is lost to an Aparoid ambush. It always struck me so that is why I always wanted to insert a flyable Arwing. And I succeeded but then I bumped with the problem of not being able to enter/exit vehicle. So finding your work was exactly what I needed to complete my dream come true. Now I can put the Arwing in Corneria level, enter, fly, exit like I always wanted

As a kid, Assault was actually my second favorite GameCube game behind Mario Sunshine. The franchise's existence is generally at least acknowledged by Nintendo, so even if it takes 10 years I can see another game coming out.

Hey thank you so much for talking about this amazing game! Probable one of my top5 gcn games. Im crossing my fingers to see a remaster of this gem or at least see a gcn expandion on the switch so thst we can finally play the anazing multiplayer online for the first time ever!! (If that happens hopefully the can chabge the splitscreen setup of mp so that people wont cheat haha)
@modsault6330
@modsault6330 Год назад
You're welcome. We probably have a higher chance of seeing it in an expansion of the Switch's online service as this game was published by Nintendo so I assume they have the full rights to it despite not making it themselves. As far as online goes we have Dolphin netplay, and there is a possible screen cheating fix. The game has a variable in the camera for it's x and y position on the screen, and its width and height. So if you change those variables correctly you get the ability to un-splitscreen the game (which I did all the time in this video and why some HUD elements when a character died were misplaced). I've never used Netplay so I'm unsure on desync risks, but an easily modifiable Gecko Code that everyone runs could allow for everyone to only see one screen. The Gecko Code I used for recording is in a google drive folder that's linked in the pinned comment and description.

Of course. You're welcome. I will be uploading more, but keep in mind I am a full time college student (and procrastinator) so it's very difficult to find time for this. I do have plans for future uploads but please be patient. As for the HUD, I don't have something for only the reticle, but I know how to nuke the entire HUD. If you're interested in turning on and off different aspects of the HUD the "Camera Control" code in "Recording Helpers" in the Google Drive folder I've linked in the description and pinned comments lets you do that with player's 3 controller when you hold R-analog and a direction on the C-stick. But if you just want no HUD all the time use the code below. Nuke HUD (USA Gecko Code): 8000000F 802A2CA8 8621000F 00000210 002A2CC8 00000020 042A2D00 00000000 222B2B00 00000000 48000000 802B2B00 14000080 3F99999A E2000001 00000000

I haven't looked into Adventures, but given how the Arwing and on-foot sections have no overlap in gameplay I'm not sure something like that would be possible. I'd like to be proven wrong though. Edit: There is an Adventures modder who made "Star Fox Adventures: Amethyst Edition". I recommend asking them for adventures related questions.

There is a discord server I have linked in the pinned comment and description for net play. No one says much but I'm sure people will be happy to play if you ask. If you are asking about a more official online, that's definitely a ways out. I personally want to prioritize other things, but if someone else is really passionate about it they could work on it themselves.

How strict is the game about what it loads in single player? Is it possible to get multiplayer characters in single player?
@modsault6330
@modsault6330 Год назад
It seems to not load much, if any, unnecessary elements. At least meaningful ones. The sprite that goes on top of the Landmaster is always loaded and can be placed on top of the Arwing instead. I haven't been able to find the function to spawn in vehicles like the Landmaster in a mission where it doesn't appear, so I'm unsure of what would happen. As for multiplayer characters specifically the game does a good job of loading what is needed. Outside of loading Fox, Slippy is loaded in mission 3 and Krystal in mission 6 and 9. There are no other multiplayer characters loaded outside of those situations. We can tell the game that we are playing as those characters and play those mission as them. So you can play mission 3 as Slippy if you wanted to. The only problem is that some sound effects (like the quote when entering a vehicle) and animations (falling off the map) aren't loaded. However, the crosshair size on-foot, walking speed, jump height, and health you have will actually change to match it in multiplayer, but the crosshair size in vehicles are unchanged. Simple Gecko Codes if you want to test it out yourself (USA version): Force Player 1 as Slippy: 002A2CA3 00000002 Force Player 1 as Krystal: 002A2CA3 00000003

@mulkuth There are two possibilities. One is to find the function that loads in characters and force call it to load, for example, Falco. the "detailed collisions" is probably due to the fact you can still crash your ship into them + bullet shots. (at least i assume, i never had the opportunity to play this game. could just auto reverse you like the edge of the map. )
@modsault6330
@modsault6330 5 месяцев назад
You are correct about the detailed collisions, but I was thought they would cheap out more on them since they could get away with it. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "auto reverse". If you mean the area of the map you can't walk past, the landmaster can't drive past, or where the the Arwing will automatically do a U-turn, those aren't actually walls of any kind. Speaking for the vehicles at least, the game saves a number of how far in any direction you can go and if you pass that point the game takes action. Even the gate talked about here 2:34 isn't actually a trigger. It's just the game checking hard coded positions and with hacks to remove certain checks you can get the same effect on any map. I can give a code to do that as I've already written it down, although finding where the gate would be may be difficult. Just know you need to face the center of the map for the gate effects to work. Gate effects on any map any mode (USA): 0404DE98 60000000 0404DEA4 60000000

Wowza, I'm glad YT Recommended this to me, I think, didn't even know there was a SFA NP Discord but hey, if you're there or running it, I'd certainly jump in! Your video was amazing and I absolutely think you killed it, hopefully one day you and others will be able to bend the game to do certain things not normally possible such as Story Mode Co-op with a harder mode, or other tricks. Say, by chance is there any way to convert EUR codes to USA codes? EUR has a ton of Project change codes that was fun to play around with that I found on GC Forever.
@modsault6330
@modsault6330 Год назад
Thanks! The Netplay discord was created by @haxage a long time ago who did host in person events for the game. Activity has declined during the many years but its not over. Fun fact about co-op story mode, the Slippy/Krystal on the ground with you in some missions is just player 2 that doesn't respond to player inputs. We can change a variable to control them as player 2. Ignoring the HUD problems, all we would need from there is a camera for player 2 and have the game to spawn in two of every vehicle to have co-op working to some degree. That is on my bucket list but I'm currently working on VS mode characters in Single player so that'll have to wait. To convert codes from different versions of the game requires the EUR version of the game (because codes are made for that version of the game), and the USA version. Put the AR code into dolphin and then after adding it edit the same code to see it decrypted. You'll see most lines start with "00YYYYYY", "02YYYYYY", or "04YYYYYY". That just means at memory address 0x80YYYYYY its value is set to whatever the second half of the line is. For more AR code documentation search on google both of these WITH quotations: "gamecube" "AR Code Types". For the next steps I recommend Dolphin Memory Engine on Github, but using the Dolphin Debugger to view the game's memory also works. 1. Find the address that is being changed (0x80YYYYYY) 2. In the PAL version of the game WITHOUT THE CODE ENABLED go to that address in your preferred tool and copy a little bit of the surrounding area of memory 3. Open the USA version of the game 4. Paste what you copied from the PAL version of the game into an array of bytes search 5. If more than one result appears try copying more/less, or only copying from in front of / behind the desired area 6. Once you find where it is replace the address part of the AR code with the proper one for the USA version of the game you just found. 7. Done

@@modsault6330 Sounds great, I'm on there now but I'll likely be around to spectate the matches if that's allowed, would be fun to watch people go at it. Pretty fair since that's your primary motive, once ya learn how to control what the game loads, then you can truly do whatever. Another silly thought is somehow taking the Pilot On-rails logic and applying it to VS mode, having a 2V2 with pilots and so fighting each other, could endorse some whacky stuff like players planting those Firework Launchers on Arwings and clusterbombing enemy Arwings and so. Doing a quick search shows this DME you mention is something I need to build? I was hoping not to if it can be helped, but I will if needed, DD also seemed confusing to activate... is something else like Cheat Engine good at doing this?
@modsault6330
@modsault6330 Год назад
@@jasevendor6939 The Gecko Code I provided in the description and pinned comment, specifically "Control Flags and Player State" allows you to enter the Pilot On-rails state by pressing "x" and "D-pad left". Although to make this work as you would want you first need to jump onto an Arwing's wing with the weapons you want already picked up. Spawning in players in such a way that all of that is done for you would be interesting, but requires manipulation over spawning locations and spawning types (Arwing vs. on-foot) which I've only looked a small amount to. DME doesn't need to be built. If you look at the releases page for it (the button is on the right section of the screen) and download the windows asset then you don't need to build it. DD requires emulation pauses to be updated properly. Cheat Engine works perfectly fine, but requires some setup to get fully working because the address won't match with what they should be on GameCube on top of endian differences. There is a smashboards post that explains it and solves that problem, but I think the download link is dead and you would need to find it elsewhere (I think I found it on some Cheat Engine Repo but don't quote me). The main idea is that searching the Game ID (GF7E01 USA and GF7P01 EUR) as a string and finding the first address that ends with 4-5 zeros is memory address 0x80000000 on the Gamecube. So you just need to add it by 0xYYYYYY from the AR code to get to your target destination. Keep in mind this is hex addition. I use Python for that but there is realistically an online calculator that works just as well if you don't have python.

Nice vid! Do you think you could make a gecko code to de-invert the controls for the Arwing? I love gamecube games, but hot damn do the inverted controls hurt gameplay. Would also be cool with we could someday get the Japanese cut-scene animations for pal or ntsc, they look great!
@modsault6330
@modsault6330 11 месяцев назад
Thanks! Inverting the Arwing is an option in the game's settings. Given you aren't playing on a guest account where its forced, got to options --> user settings --> profile of interest --> pick control scheme --> invert Y axis Arwing. As for the cutscenes, if you're talking about the extra expressions in the briefings, those are realistically a far way out. The biggest problem is that I don't know what files contain the animations. So I couldn't even test what replacing the files would do. If you were talking about the extra particle affects in the pre-rendered cutscenes, you can just replace the files inside the "movie" folder. Although you'll also get Japanese audio and half-finished English captions.

Is it possible to use the Wolfen in single player of Star Fox Assault?
@modsault6330
@modsault6330 Год назад
Yes*. While I'm not spawning in one normally there is a workaround. Since all Arwings and Wolfens share a lot of code, this applies to all of them. There is a variable controlling how an Arwing/Wolfen is rendered. One value is for the Arwing in on-rails (rendering problems can occur if too close), the Arwing in all-range mode (like in Star Fox 64 the wings are more spread out compared to on-rails), and the Wolfen. If we change it to render as the Wolfen (and adjust a lot of positions) we get a Wolfen from the Arwing. Some problems with the brake lights and hitboxes do appear though. Keep in mind a Wolfen is loaded in missions 3, 5, 7, 8, and 10. We can also change another variable to give an Arwing/Wolfen the properties of one of the vehicles (except for the speed). So we can change that in an Arwing to get the bullets and red barrel roll of the Wolfen. Here is a comically long gecko code (USA version) to do this. To use it, hold x. While doing so press up d-pad to get the properties of the Wolfen and press down d-down to appear as a Wolfen. These can't be reversed without a mission restart or dying. As far as vehicles go, I manually changed the memory address explained at 8:23 to get it. I made a code that does it for you, but it only works in Vs mode and may spawn you in a place where you immediately die. I'm currently working on a code to work in all modes and have the vehicle spawn on you, but until then take this. VS mode affecting spawning (USA Gecko Code): Player 4 Up-dpad = On-foot Player 4 Down-dpad = Landmaster Player 4 Left-dpad = Arwing Player 4 Right-dpad = Wolfen 2A29AA9A 00000000 002A2E54 00000001 2A29AA99 00000000 002A2E54 00000002 2A29AA95 00000000 002A2E54 00000004 2A29AA97 00000000 002A2E54 00000008 E2000001 00000000 I don't know what the PAL code is, unless its from Ralt, but as far as weapons go we can just tell the game we have ammo for them. There isn't a good way of doing it. The game loads things in singleplayer by reading 1 massive file that has everything it needs for that mission. So, unlike with VS mode, we can't just change the map ID to get any map we want. But there are ways of trying to get it to work. I linked a google drive folder in the description and pinned comment. Open up "Recording Helpers [Modsault]" and copy the Gecko Code for "Camera Control". Then on Player 3 Hold L-analog, and C-stick up for like a second or 2. This will hide all other players cameras and make player 1's fullscreen (This does crash if not playing with 4 players due to poor code on my end. If on Emulator click "Ignore for this session"). You can use this to walk around in VS mode without having to deal with splitscreen. Alternatively, thanks to Jase-Vendor, there was away found to start VS mode matches without all players readying up. But the game forces two player. He also discovered that by changing a variable before the map loads you can get the VS mode versions of maps in single player and vise versa. A value of 1 forces the single player version of maps and anything higher is vs mode. This does come with the side effect of the game splitscreening even when only player 1 exists, but I can fix that for you. I don't recommend doing this method because it can be quite bootleg (especially on Corneria), but I'm giving you the option. The code to do so is below VS mode map types in singleplayer and force player 1 to be fullscreen (DON'T USE IN VS MODE!!!) In the N64 the Mc Beth mission, "The Forever Train" had a point in which it had a 1 hit kill. What happens in Assault when the infested General Pepper flagship cannot kill you? Can you show us?

From limited testing, General Pepper is scripted to preform attacks at specific times relative to Wolf's flight progress. Which is why the fight is the exact same regardless of difficulty or randomness. The path Wolf takes only goes so far, and General Pepper only does so many attacks. So eventually you'll reach a point where the Wolfen stops moving and General Pepper just stands there in a similar fashion to what happens if you interrupt one of his attacks fast enough. I've never tried reaching that point legitimately, so I don't know if its possible to see normally. As far as when I'll show it depends on many factors, and right now I'm unsure on when I'll do it. If you want to easily replicate it yourself I'll give you an invincibility code for the USA version of the game. 8000000F 802A2CA8 8621000F 00000040

@@modsault6330 it is not possible to reach that stage without codes. Only on Hard mode does Pepper have enough HP to go far.

@@edcr2959 I was able to do it without hacks. The trick is to play on the Japanese version of the game on bronze because it gives you twice as much health. Cancel all melee attacks and tank all of his green balls. At the end, with the flurry of melee attacks, you need to cancel the second one and tank the others. If done right you should both have very little health. Never tested on Gold or Silver though. What's interesting is that the Japanese version acts differently to the USA version. Instead of the Wolfen pausing at the end of the route it just teleports back to the start of the route seen when first being on the Wolfen. It'll then play through it, and because the route for both mission phases on the Wolfen are the same (which doesn't seem to be true for the USA version of the game), you'll eventually be on the part where you start the boss fight. General Pepper will only attack you when you approach the ground to do melee attacks as he normally would on his part of the Wolfen route. Otherwise he doesn't do any attacks.

Also, is there a way to access the plasma cannon during the regular on-foot levels?
@modsault6330
@modsault6330 Год назад
Yeah. It works like every other weapon so you just tell the game you have ammo for it. It works perfectly in single player, although the model may not be loaded. In vs mode it acts like a different weapon entirely. Plasma Cannon for Player 1 (USA): 222A2B60 00000000 48000000 802A2B60 12000220 00008000 E2000001 00000000

@@modsault6330 Oh, is that for the PC or console version?
@modsault6330
@modsault6330 Год назад
@@CrystalKingdomGeneral4942 It's a Gecko code that works on console (which includes PC because Dolphin emulates console). On emulator, open up the game. Then on the first dolphin window go to "Tools" --> "Cheat Manager". On the new window click "Gecko Codes" and select "Add New Code" at the bottom. Put a name and the code then save it. Enable the checkmark. Close and reopen the game. Console is more complex but the main idea is to have Homebrew, Nintendont, the game (on SD card or normal CD), and the gecko code as a GCT file.
