Nicely done, Mike! One of the few people I actually see replace the gas control valve the way I do, without draining the whole water heater. Just make sure your new valve is directly next to you, then rock and roll.

A lot of fossil fuel devouring units in that small space. Even a CO detector won’t save you from the downhill vent into the chimney. Mikey Pipes went with Door #1 and prevented his client from getting zonked!

Was surprised that you had doubts about the Gas Valve being bad. Seems tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of Rheem Water Heaters were manufactured with defective gas valves. Most of the defective Gas Valves were manufactured around year 2021. Some failed immediately, others failed shortly to a year after.

I’ve found one vented in buctduct shut it down, disconnected the gas and wiring from gas valve to, said a friend of the family did it! 🤦‍♂️ He’s no friend sir

That guy bought the water heater from a “friend”, then drove by the Depot, flagged down a Chuck with a Truck who could install a water heater, and Presto, ala peanut butter sandwich!

The sad thing is the homeowner or whoever did that install will have that thing connected back up and making hot water before the sun sets .... At least you have video evidence and a shit ton of witnesses that show you leaving the unit in a safe, non functional state. If anything happens you can easily say "Lookie see, it wasnt me!"

dont you guys in America have tags your local gas utility company gets notified on what happens at a home. in Ontario at least everything is sent in to our local gas utility company and gets handled from there. if its not fixed withn 30 days the gas supply to the house gets turned off until the infracton has been resolved!!

Some more food for thought I got stuck by in a Rheem hot water tank from Home Depot because of the size issue 3 days later it wasn't working the parts were not available I remove the tank and reinstalled the new one and Rheem gave me a hell of a labor reimbursement

Good catch on all the bad things with the install. I have always heard bad things about Honeywell gas valves, to stay away from them. Why did they put a pan with the outlet not connected to anything, pretty stupid! 🤦‍♂🤷‍♂

In my area, and lots of others, the drain pans are required to be metal when used with gas heaters...

That was a homeowner Home Depot special. All parts and supplies are from Home Depot which is fine just do it right. What is the point of a pan when it isn’t piped into a drain.

Should be a minimum of 6” clearance between the boiler exhaust and the water heater exhaust to reduce the boiler causing back pressure on the water heater when both are running. Also higher btu equipment should always be the lowest exhaust than work your way up from there which they did do that correctly lol

it's probably been that way for 50+ years with a shorter tank, them putting in a tall unit is one issue, flue pipe is technically the wrong size, ugly smashed and restricted looking. codes usually don't force you to change the size on replacement of appliance only(they may there), but if the chimney/breach is having anything done or the flue is rotted away, then yes it has to be changed. if the pipe wasn't so forked up, I'd say jam in a short tank and show them tail lights.

I looked up the flue sizing table in the code book... the flue vent diameter is sized on the height and btu.. looks like 3 inch is legal in this case.. am I wrong?

Mike dumb question... is it legal to tap the water into the boiler exhaust? I see that a lot out here in cali with water heaters being tapped into gas furnaces exhausts just curious? I'm guessing no due to probably substantial exhaust pressure differences between the water heater and boiler...

If the 40,000 BTU water heater requires a 4 inch flue pipe, why does the included diverter accept 3 inch or 4 inch pipe? The down pitch is an obvious fail. Can you discuss when you need a stainless liner and when the terra cotta flue tiles are OK?

You missed that the flexible riser on the right is plastic under that branded SS and can not be within 18" of the top of the water heater and within 6" of the flue

Maybe if you do not change it out when you replace the water heater but that is not anywhere near immediate. where local codes allow it most water heaters are installed with it

I see mentioned about the bad gas valves. Would quality be horrible because of COVID shutdowns around production and shipping products worldwide? No quality control, bad parts from other places etc etc? Just asking if recalls for those models?

The Home Depot special .. vent is undersized, no liner, using an appliance connector, no drip leg, room probably has insufficient combustion air and likely no fitter's tag .. Mikey pipes I'm surprised you still went forward with the gas valve replacement I would have just shut her down and left an "A" tag and got the home owner to convert to a power vent direct vent

Homeowners never learn. I was in Home Depot a few years ago. I was in the plumbing isle and witnessed a young couple looking at 4 in venting material for a gas water heater they were installing. One problem was they were looking to buy the venting made for dryers. They obviously didn't know what they were doing. Not sure why they bothered installing a waterheater pan with nowhere to drain

There is one possible reason to put a pan without a drain - you can put an alarm-connected water sensor in the pan and give a little extra time to react to a leak before the water is all over the floor. You just need to have a cap on the pan's drain outlet.

@@MosheKatz Just drill a hole in the floor and let it drain into the crawl space. I am bad for not finishing the drain pain install. Mine has never been hooked up and I figure that the tank will rust out in about 7 to 10 years and when i'm done procrastinating, I will eventually install the piping to the pan. Most likely, the tank will fail and my house will be flooded and then I will make it a priority for next time.

@@PipeDoctor If it wasn't for home depot, I would have been living in a car. I would have bought a furnace from them if it was available. Even my employer at one time sold direct comfort and then stopped. I ended up ordering it through alpine and wanted to have a local company install it but they wouldn't touch direct comfort and said they are only sold online and are dangerous junk. Then quoted me some insane amount of money to install a new unit so I ended up reading the installation manual(lots and lots of pages that tells you everything you need to know) and installed it myself in 2020 and its been keeping me warm every winter ever since. I also have CO detectors all over my house with wifi so I get an alert on my phone if i'm not home.

@@ATSNorthernMI You're forgetting about houses with concrete floors on the lowest level - quite common in a large part of the country. For example, in Maryland, you'll often see a water heater (and other equipment, such as HVAC) in an unfinished part of the basement, right next to other rooms which are finished. Water leaking onto the floor will ruin the flooring of the finished space, so catching the leak and alerting about it is very important. (I don't know why builders don't put floor drains in these mechanical spaces, but it's pretty common that they don't.)

@@MosheKatz In those situations, it is good to drain into the sump pump area or install a leak detector. I have a simple company called mocreo sensor that allows me to monitor multiple grow rooms for humidity and temp to having leak detectors on their A/C or any other system to detect a leak in real time to alert my phone and even shut the system down if its an A/C if needed.

hey I got a question so I got a rheem powervent water heater well every few months I have to take the burner and wipe off white soot from the flame sensor. what would cause natural gas to produce white soot?

also, contaminates in the air being used for combustion or lack of air/exhaust backpressure. if you use lots of cleaners, bleach, sprays, etc. in the house/basement anywhere near it could be causing it. basement walls leaching in bad gasses? water leaks/very high humidity? that's where coaxial vented models are nice, using outdoor air, well until people put a pool nearby or do other stupid things around the vents. 🤣

Wouldn't the manufacturer supply a 4" draft devirter? It didn't look like the old draft devirter. I did years of warranty repairs on w/h. If one was not installed as per manufacturers instructions, it would void the warranty.

@@PipeDoctor Here's an idea (not sure if it's legal under plumbing or gas codes however). If a licensed person red tags and shuts down a natural gas or propane appliance, they also use Permatex orange thread locker (no heat required to remove, but stronger than blue thread locker) on the gas supply pipe cap to show they tried to keep the owner/user from hooking up again)? Of course, cellphone photo or video would be another measure taken.

2 things with the gas piping that really concerned me. 1. the 1/2" npt should have a drip leg (drip pocket) 2. the gas pipe should be supported., which it was not. the venting is a whole different story!! wow the person who installed it should get their licenses taken away from them, im kinda hinting that most likely the home owner or someone he knows did the work!! no gas Licenses pro would ever do that. I would also turn their gas boiler off due to the chimney being in that shape!! Very Scary!! job needs either 5' or 6" common vent. 4 inch vent for water heater and what ever size the draft hood off the boiler is!!!

You may find that they will just put another gas pipe in there and continue to use the heater as is maybe the local gas company should have been informed as well about the hazard.

So it was the gas control after all. Then you proceeded to install it knowing that you were going to tear down his setup. Looks like the Pipe Doctor is actually the Pipe Police and yes you feel good for protecting the Pipe Doctor and Rheem from liability and finally the client. Peter, however, appears doubtful. The sad thing is that local code enforcement passed the installation. The poor guy got screwed all the way around.

Hey Mikey, of Mikey Pipes Plumbing not easy being cheesy. I like your podcast/social media, looking thru some comments/reply. That would have been a $10,000 project to correct those problems with the gas fired hwh. That gas might have locked itself out, a lot of short cycling, because of flue gas flow in the flue piping? I know a few dead homeowners, do you? Love you buddy, might sound a little queer again. lol.
