This movie speaks for itself. In my opinion - it deserved the oscar. At least Andrew did. But anyway, I think that Mel and his crew did a great job, so I highly recommend to watch the full movie when you will have the time to do so.

0:46 honestly every time he tells someone he's coming back for them it makes my heart go a little mushy. On the battlefield it really becomes every man for himself, I can't imagine how much of a relief it would be to hear those words when you think you're about to die alone and that nobody is left to help you. Edit: by every man for himself I meant literally every person in this video clip who thought nobody was going to be around to save them you dinguses, now stop fighting

It not ever man for himself in the America military. We don't fight for hate of the enemy, or even love of country. During the fight, its all about the men to the left or right of you.

Nobody gets left behind in the American military. Both the army and the marines have the brother and sisterhood mentality in battle. The men and women to your left and right are like family, and if you abandon them on the battlefield when they need you the most then there’s a special place in hell for you. Real life isn’t like the video games or movies kid. My dad served in the marines as an infantryman in the Cold War. When he got out at the age of 25 he was at his parent’s house and saw on the TV his fellow marines were still over there fighting and dying for their country. He stood up and said “I’ve gotta go back out there”. He was walking to the door to leave but my grandmother stopped him and convinced him to stay.

I and my wife had the honor of meeting Desmond Doss back in the early 1990's in CT. Such a humble man, so small in stature, and yet a giant in America's military history. The book was much better than the video but the video was a good summation of what really happened. I'd imagine that Mel Gibson likely thought: "I'll have to tone it down a bit, too much content for a short movie"

Of all the soldiers he helped, the Japanese one is the one that hits the hardest. He doesn't even hesitate, as soon as he acknowledged his presence, he immediately noticed his wounds and without a second thought went to help him. The way the Japanese soldier also realizes that and just "relax" and let him do his work, only to see the relief of the morphine. At that moment, there wasn't a Japanese soldier and an American soldier, there was a medic and a patient.

It’s never the people that hate each other. From my history class, the German people were struggling after WW1 and, when presented with a scapegoat (the jews, slavs, etc.) for their problems, they took it just to have something to direct their attention towards. That’s not to say there weren’t anti-semetic people in Germany, just that most people wouldn’t ordinarily have a problem with semetics, and only did when Hitler published Mein Kamf. It’s a human flaw to seek reasons for hardship and punish said reason, often the blame is thrown impulsively and people will turn against whoever is considered a suspect (regardless of actual guilt). It’s hard to clear your name when everyone is determined and desperate it’s you, and reasoning is practically forgotten when emotions get high. If someone says “this is the cause of your pain,” it’s fair to say that people want to get rid of the cause.

Andrew Garfield deserved the Oscar nomination because he brought every ounce of courage and strength to Desmond Doss. The most touching scene in this clip is when Desmond calmed the Japanese soldier and even gave him morphine. He was the kindest soul to both his men and the enemy’s men. You don’t see that every day. All have sinned against god God cannot accept imperfectness and we are imperfect cause we are sinners. People need salvation because god is perfect. God loves sinners (us) so much that his son Jesus Christ died in the cross for our sins so we can repent and follow him. The door is still open to this day! But there will be a time where that door will be shut. We cannot earn our salvation through good things we do. Salvation is through repenting of your sins, believing on what Jesus Christ did, and follow his ways. This is the gift from god here. Jesus became sin and died so we can have a clean record. John 3:16 For god so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.a

Patricia Gullickson Ummm. Bandaging the wounded man and giving him morphine was an act of kindness. Yes they were enemies; but Pvt. Doss saw past that and showed Mercy. Jennee Reedus heroes are the ones who do what they have to do. The ones who make the tough choices. What Desmond did was very honorable because he saved so many lives, but he is no leader. True heroes know there duty, and that is to fight as a good soldier does. Desmond did not fight for his Country. He did not fight so his brothers could go home. He fought for himself and his own spiritual enlightenment. If everyone was like him we would all be defeated. So no, he is not someone to marvel at.

Desmond Doss was real, in case you didn't know. I definitely would NOT say this is anti-war, but NOT pro-war. Just a movie on a heroic and badass man.

The level of kindness he has is endless. He doesn’t even know that enemy soldier, but he helped him anyway.

Ex Creed It always gets me too, especially set against the soundtrack and the montage of him bringing in soldier after soldier. When it's clear he's starting to get exhausted but he's still going, it just hits even harder.
