This movie speaks for itself. In my opinion - it deserved the oscar. At least Andrew did. But anyway, I think that Mel and his crew did a great job, so I highly recommend to watch the full movie when you will have the time to do so.

What's even more impressive is that Desmond Doss was only 5'4" tall... Andrew Garfield is 5'10"... subtract half a foot and even more muscle -- some say Doss barely broke 100 lbs. or so, yet he dragged 75 men to the edge and lowered them down one at a time. He even carried another soldier over his shoulders for the length of a football field. Believe in God or not, but that little man proved himself the equal to Samson in Okinawa.

@@vintinoo1924 God doesn’t “let” things happen, we as men have free will. If I kill someone today I can’t say “oh why did God let that happen” because it was I and I alone who is to blame. God does not create war, man does that. All that is good in me is of God, and the rest is myself. I totally respect your beliefs although they aren’t the same as mine, why don’t you apply that same respect to me? Is it because God doesn’t want you to? It can’t be that because then you would be admitting he is real, so you take full responsibility for your own actions then? Still proving my point, that these traits are engrained in man and the Father is not at fault. You are free to believe whatever you want, I love and respect you as my fellow man all the same, and I pray for you to find peace and happiness in any direction you take your life.

It is said that the actual number of people he saved could be up to 100 men. Because the army said he saved 100 men but Doss didn't want to take credit for all 100 men that were saved. He only wanted to take credit for saving 50 men. So they agreed to put 75 men on the records instead (the middle ground).

@@thebigw3651 Why didn't a marine help him secure a perimeter and help men down ? the movie shows the marines to be afraid to climb the net right next to the spot Doss was at. Medics are trained to treat wounds. All marines are trained to help their brothers.. why didnt they in this movie? You see the reality is far from what the movie depicts.. The ridge wasn't on a beach and was narrow and thin. It was fire swept. The lower ridge between two others. and not very high either. The movie does a horrible job showing that. Just horrible. The men at the bottom could well be playing cards or writing letters home, for the help they gave. I'm talking about the movie not the actual marines involved. not the actual battle. No idea why a great story is done in such a way.

I believe it is because it implies a belief in god, which while fine on its own, can be off putting to religious minorities currently in service who either don’t believe in the Abrahamic god, or don’t believe in gods at all. It could also just be that there is no NATO Medic corp as most medics are part of individual squads/platoons rather than a dedicated medic group. I could see it being a motto for field hospitals, but those typically employ civilian medical personnel conscripted into emergency medical service behind the front line.

This film - even this scene in particular - resonated with me the most. I remember my grandma stories how she, a head surgeon of her field hospital, was the last one to leave it when Germans started bombarding them and how her best friend (also a doctor in the same hospital) was almost blinded by the shell explosion. Soliders make the war go - but never forget all those brave men and women who made sure they could come back alive

Kinda reminds me of the ANZAC beliefs and way of practice in World War 1, World War 2 with the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea where the troops halted the Japanese advanced and made them retreat, and in the Vietnam War. Out of all three of these wars, the ANZAC troops have one of the highest rates of soldiers that returned home (they died but their comrades didn’t leave them)and survived compared to any other country. This is because of the ANZAC’s characteristic high moral, strong sense of determination and mateship, and we’re firm believers in “No Man Left Behind”.

The real story is even more unbelievable than the movie. If you watch the documentary "The Conscientious Objector" all those people that he single-handly rescued, were rescued in broad daylight on an open battlefield with little to no cover. His army buddies that were there said they couldn't believe their eyes. They said the bullets, mortars, grenades and artillery shells (steel rain they called it) were flying all around him while he was rescuing his comrades. IMHO The documentary is so much better than the movie and is a must watch.

My sister's husband said this movie was "Okay." And I kind of just looked at him like: "did you watch the same movie I did???" Hacksaw Ridge is a masterpiece, plain and simple. And it doesn't even cover the true scale of what Desmond Doss achieved and survived during the war and even waters down other things, for the sake of not making the movie unbelievable. A true hero, one of the greatest. I half expect that God himself came to greet him at Heaven's Gates on his passing, accompanied by all the men he'd saved that were already there.

Future Generations have grown weaker and pathetic. They don't understand the meaning and working to earn something. They believe they're entitled to have everything when they don't realize that it has to be earned. It's painful to watch.

I don't see anything great in starting two world wars. Those brave men and women deserve to be respected for the life they lived and the hardships they went through. But this war man-made and we should never ever forget that. I'll take all the 'weak and pathetic' people if it means preventing another war like this.

Weaker and pathetic. No. We grown smarter and less racist and more caring. If thats all you've seen of this "generataion" Then you have scraped the surface. Or then im sorry for your country if thats literately all there is.

I'm not religious. I don't believe in God. However, after watching this movie, this scene knowing that the events and Doss' actions were true, one can't not help but believe something spiritual was there, guiding him. If that was God or his will to save the lives of those who needed saving regardless of what side they were on. What Doss did was inspiring, courageous, and incredible. This movie did bring tears to my eyes.

'Lord, help me get one more'. This dialogue made me think of Schindler's List, and how in that film, he was crying about how he couldn't save just one more person. Both Oskar Schindler and Desmond Doss have changed the lives of so many people just by saving a few lives and maybe, during the wars, there were other so many people who saved countless lives. And this, tbh, is what gives me even a tiny bit of hope towards humanity.
