Hadleigh has two weeks to sell a diamond worth almost a million pounds, his cut of the sale is worth twenty five percent of the commission. James has a Chinese buyer lined up in Hong Kong but it will be a tricky sale especially when it becomes very clear that Hadleigh’s buyer has his own agenda.
Hadleigh is once again at his best when getting the better of people who are trying to do him over. He knows that someone is trying to play him for a fool in order to get the diamond for a cheaper price however it’s not until the closing scenes on the plane home that he finds out just who is the surprising figure behind it all (and it’s not who you might think).
Any TV show taking the opportunity to film overseas was always a big deal and there was an extensive four page feature in the TV Times for the week about the filming and Harper himself being mobbed by the English colony out there. At the time Hong Kong was still very much under English rule. With the whole thing filmed on location there is no production designer credited and Hadleigh himself is the only regular cast member to appear. Nancy Kwan was main guest star, she remains best known for her role in the film "The World of Suzie Wong".
First broadcast Friday 23rd April 1976.
Cast:
Gerald Harper as James Hadleigh
Joop Doderer as Grootman
Nancy Kwan as Kai Tin
Christopher Benjamin as Oberman
David Waller as Ian Branby
Eddie Au Yeung as Mr Kwok
Richard Wong Ching as First Chinese Heavy
Mak Yue Choi as Second Chinese Heavy
Writer: David Ambrose / Director: Jim Goddard

Remember the first series when he went to Greece to rescue his fiancé. Don’t think they ever left YTV studios. I think they are on the famous Jumbo floating restaurant, sadly it sank a few years ago.

Just proves not every episode can be a good one I guess…. This one’s really bizarre - a bankrupt British landowner miraculously gets his paws on a million-Dollar diamond (how is never explained) and acts as a broker for its sale?? Oh well, there’s always next week (hopefully back in Yorkshire). And if James continues to bed every woman who crosses his path, he’ll soon have a queue of heirs to continue his ancestral line.

"a queue of heirs" named Fitz-Hadleigh no doubt ;-)

British Airways girl at Heathrow to Haders: 'Do you know the way to the first class lounge Mr Hadleigh?' Do you really need to ask? Of course he bloody does.

Kinda Bondish episode, James the international spy

Yes - just like Bond (who obviously never got the memo that spies are meant to be INVISIBLE, not announce themselves to all and sundry), Hadleigh stands out like a totem pole on the Norfolk Broads.

I think Gerald Harper would have been a good actor to play James Bond. I only liked Roger Moore as 007, he was debonair, sexy, and believable. The rest were yucky even the one with the blue trunks coming out of the sea. I enjoyed this very much as we were away from his library for once. Thank you Happy New Year

Yes, I thought that too. You'd think being Hong Kong it would be posh British cars. Don't know what's going on there.

This was, I presume, when Gerald was attempting to be a little “waspish”, shirt open to the waist, and mixing with the seedy element of the diamond trade. A fantastic actor, still alive today, I think in his mid 90s….. I would love to see, or indeed attend “An audience with”, this super smooth actor, having attended “an audience with Sir Roger Moore”, it tends to reveal the true personality, and good actors, tend to play themselves. If your watching these old episodes Gerald, please consider it.

But, a velvet jacket in Hong Kong! I agree with what you say though. It seems those who have met him come away with a favourable impression. Seems a true gent in real life.
