I tried to visit Hadrian's Wall to Birdoswald (before pandemic) by taking a train from Carlisle but upon alighting at Haltwhistle (Bus 185 Mon to Sar - three return journeys a day from Haltwhistle Rail Station and Market Place to the Roman Army Museum, Walltown, Gilsland and Birdoswald Roman Fort) the bus wasn't available so aborted the trip and just go around the area, (bought some handicraft nicely-printed cloth bags) but in the train bound back to Carlisle still got photos of the wall. My intention was to go to specific major remaining of the fort, not to trek the entire wall because they just look the same, and my age can no longer weather long-distance walks unlike when I was younger.
@GETtwoIT

Awww sorry to hear about the bus situation. Hopefully you will get back out there and properly explore the area. Atb Katie and Kev

Still a win-win situation. Got to explore sights of Carlisle like Carlisle Cathedral full of history just like Carlisle Castle, Instagrammable Roman structures called The Citadel, and streets as far back as medieval ages, which I felt kinda time-warped walking on cobbled streets with the Butcher's shops as far back as the earlier centuries passing Anglo-Saxon, Vikings, Romans, and Normans times.

Blisters, noted you had them on the West Highland Way which in all fairness it was said that you got your feet wet and I don't know if you have ever noticed that your hands grip better when wet, we are fish out of the sea. Anyway as you know it is caused by friction which I have overcome by wearing decent hiking socks and a nice clean pair of office woolen dress socks which allows the feet to move using the 2 layers of socks as friction plates. Have a look into it and see if it works for you.
@GETtwoIT
@GETtwoIT 5 лет назад
Thanks for the advice! Blisters....Katie had real fun with them on hadrians wall and WHW. The problem we found was with her foot wear. We have sorted it now with better fitting footwear, and have been on many walks since with no problems. We did try the liner sock and walking sock solution, but it made her feet too hot. Just a pair of darn tough socks seem to do the trick.

Hi. Very much enjoyed your video of this historic trail. What beautiful scenery!! It's great to see a couple doing this together - a "marriage-builder"! Question: I noticed we didn't see the wall on day 5. I assume it either doesn't exist or the trail doesn't go near it (?). Background: I'm an avid hiker and am currently hiking the Appalachian Trail in sections. I lived in England from May, 1963 - Jan. 1966. My dad was stationed at RAF Alconbury, a U.S. Air Force base. We lived in St. Ives and Warboys. I was ages 10-13, and loved your country! I recall seeing signs for "Public Footpaths". In later years, as I developed an interest in hiking and trails, I read a good bit about UK National Trails. I will look forward to watching other videos of your walking adventures. God Bless!
@GETtwoIT
@GETtwoIT 3 года назад
Hey there! Thanks for watching! We both would love to hike the Appalachian Trail someday. Unfortunately, much of the wall has now disappeared. Sections of it were used for roadbuilding in the 18th century, most of which lies beneath the B6318 "Military Road". What remains is still amazing and walking alongside it takes you through some beautiful landscapes.

@GETtwoIT 2 года назад
Why do you think the walk goes on further than this point?
@malcolmstead272
@malcolmstead272 2 года назад
@@GETtwoIT The idea of the walk is to see the defence system the Romans installed. The defences did not end at Wallsend, they carried on to the sea; the wide river estuary created a natural defence and was policed by a large fort at the river mouth, therefore some of the archaeology is missed out.

I beg to differ. It's far easier to do that hike in shoes (less weight on your feet) and if properly trained and no injuries, ankle support shouldn't really be an issue. Also, the load on the back seems to be nowhere near the limit of what a good hiking shoe can support.

@GETtwoIT

Katie: I like both backpacks for different reasons. The osprey is lighter and holds more but with less thrills. The gregory is a neat bag with hip pockets, easy access to the sides and more padded straps. Both are comfy. If i was to choose it would be the osprey because its lighter.

hi, great vid, did you use your trail runners all the way or would you recommend boots?
@GETtwoIT

We use trail trainers on all our long distance walks. We've found the perfect trail trainers in the Topo ultraventures. We prefer trail trainers as they are light on your feet and more flexible; but you sacrifice ankle support you get with boots. We would recommend wearing what you feel comfortable with and used too wearing.

We started our walk from Bowness on Solway. The reason why we did this was to be able to drive straight back home from Newcastle. We drove to Newcastle, left the car at Newcastle airport, took a train from Newcastle to Carlisle, and got a bus to Bowness on Solway. Then walked back to our car 😁👍
