1100 total in first powerlifting comp in seven years with a short 5 weeks prep after winning the 4 biggest competitions in strongman, all in one year. Badass
it's not like he didn't train during those 7 years ! Sure he trained strongman but his main training was still focused on the big 3 or a close variation. And when he's prepping for a strongman event, he's getting ready for a competition that will last for a few days, this powerlifting meet was a "walk in the park" for him lol He is the world strongest man after all !
@@groovytony5568 Yeah but still training strictly for strongman your doing alot of other things besides just the big 3 lifts. If he devoted all his time to powerlifting only he could break 2,500lbs easy.
@@groovytony5568 Pretty sure overhead is main staple in strongman, not bench and he can do like 200 kg overhead. box squat and front squat are needed in conjunction with back squat often for carryover to other strongman events.
Center judge white lighted the 1st squat, all three white lighted the 2nd, and one of the side judges white lighted the 3rd and yet his squat looked identical all three times. I don't think the problem is his squat, but rather consistency from the judges.
@Strength Central - I’m sorry but that’s B.S. Thor third Squat attempt at 460 KG was a good lift in my opinion. He squatted a little bellow parallel. If not that then, he definitely squatted at parallel. Can you please explain to me why his third squat attempt didn’t count as a good lift?
Keep in mind Thor basically got that last squat and Eddie hall broke his previous record by about 40 kilos, I'm just saying a 500kg squat is a lot closer than people might think
Pulling mixed grip probably cost him that last deadlift. He’s much more used to pulling double overhand in straps. Also I know his nerve damage in one of his arms means he fries his grip pretty fast on one side unfortunately.
He ACTUALLY could have already hit world record in knee wraps if he only went a bit deeper in his 3rd squat and got that deadlift all the way LOL! This isnt even his primary fucking sport, WTF!!!!!!!
Big thor training Larry wheels for world STRONGman competition💪🏿🏋🏿♂️🏆THOR IS A BEAST IMAGINE HIM AND LARRY FUCKING SHIT UP IN THA GYM MOVE BITCH GET OUT THE WAY! COME ON 🗣LARRRY!
I Wonder what Eddie hall would get in a powerlifting meet. We know that he and Thor is pretty similar in the squat. He has probably 470-80 kg Deadlift raw. And ive seen Eddie bench 260kg for reps.!!!
@@justing9130 yeah that is true but i show some deadlift more than 500lb i think.. and 500lb deadlift is easy as hell. So why i would lying about that 315lb squat is easy AF??? I bench more than 315lb man You can see it in my IG @mariano_franke 😉😉
Bob Troti wldnt be so shore about dead lift seen him do 470 and had more in him he is still getting stronger and is only 30 years old still has a solid 5 years or so of his peak I see him being total world record holder and best strong man ever if he doesn’t get injured at the end of them 5 years he only really started training heaven bench not long ago he is to tall to have a massive bench though so up to high 200s he cld get squat and dead lift capable of 500 or near enough too in the future this guy is the strongest dude we may ever see
Now that I would of liked to see. Eddie is arguably the strongest ever at the static movements in strongman. Imagine if he dedicated a year to nothing but powerlifting. I would do imagine he would break the total record by quite a good amount.
It was close if it wasn't good....and it moved very, very easy. Certainly seems he could have got it, and maybe even more, with an added inch of depth. In other words....if he comes back for more, watch out...
@Tyler Vincent okay good point. but it's a combination of things: they have amazing strength genetics along with a huuuuuuuge frame, all of these things come together to make them world class i guess
2 red ligths on the 3rd squat wtf?!?!?!? If they gave him the 3rd squat and he didn’t fail the 3rd deadlift because of the grip he would match malanychev with 1140kg on his first powerlifting meet.... absolutely amazing!!!!
@@novicelifts5197 What are you talking about? Mike is completely right, he failed the deadlift, DUE to his grip. He obviously has the strength in every other muscle required for the deadlift, he's got to get his grip up. His back and everything else can handle about 1050-1100 at this point.
Lol nah Orm Storolfsson walked three steps with the mast of Ormrinn Langi, and that mast weighed 650 kg. Hafthor took that record back on 2015 but Orm Storolfsson carried that log a thousand yeara ago, back when there were no gyms. So old vikings beat new ones for sure.
Sky’s the limit for this guy on a good day and more training on raw grip and bench technique this guy cld go over 2700 pounds no shit def the strongest all round human to walk the earth but time will tell
he's definitely capable of 2500+., but I'd like to see him actually compete with people, not just try to put up a huge total in his own gym. Join USPA and go against the best. Sometimes tactics come into play with the attempts, e.g. you might not need a 20kg increase on 3rd attempt to get the win, or you might need more. I'm not saying totals like this don't count, of course it all counts, but in context, a lower total but 1st place at a big meet is more impressive.
Well, his bench performance was excellent; a mixed bag with squat and deads. Thor does bring a lot of much needed excitement to the sport, so I hope he keeps on competing in powerlifting!
@John Dougherty From everyone who pulled on the elephant bar they say it is harder than a regular bar. His grip is the problem. If he had straps, he could have probably done 1050-1100 on that bar fresh, or in the competition 1000.
Glyn Hardy I think they mean pore for him he has done 450 raw in gym b4 and 470 I think with straps in comp possibly more behind closed doors he shld be able to do 450-470 squat 430-460 dl 250-270 bench if he trains specific for this stuff and break the total record by a good chunk
@@Azamidd his max deadlift will always be defined by his grip limit, not by his deadlifting power (lower back, legs etc.). Same with Eddie Hall. But grip strength is Thor's weakness (compared to all the other strength aspects). Guys like Brian Shaw, Mike Burke or Mark Felix have had a much better grip than Thor. He had nerve damage in his right arm which affects his grip strength quite a bit. I for one was surprised that he pulled 410 without any apparent grip problems. 410kg deadlift in powerlifting competition is amazing and high-end-elite-level.
Its funny how so many people doubted his depth in his squat, the pause that he wasnt preparing for in his bench and Thor being too tired to deadlift heavy without straps, man he just proved to everyone how much god damn power and potential he has
What are u talking about,he did get red lighted for depth twice and failed his dead because of grip. Altho the critics were right, that is no reason to hate and his performance is still impressive as fuck and world level.
I'm really surprised how much he was able to bench with a pause. I thought he'd be lucky to get 500lbs. Can't weight for his next comp to see how much he improves on this.
Let’s not forget, Larry wheels is going to Iceland for 2-3 months at the start of January to train strongman with Thor specifically, without a doubt Thor will be taking powerlifting advice from him also
I don’t know if you watched ray Williams squat, but he went deeper than Thor. Boris Sheiko was the judge that red lighted Thor himself, and if u watch closely Thor just barely gets shy of parallel
It's not fair to compare a Tall Hafthor (2.05) with Ray Williams (1.82) at Powerlifting. If Williams competed at World's Strongest Man Competition, he would be last. Hafthor is by far the Strongest man ever!!!
Lasha Talakhadze with proper training could possibly break records in both strongmen and powerlifting. I mean, the man can explode 220+ kg (485 lb) above his head in less than a second. He would smash everyone if he trained for records
A much better performance than I expected. If he breaks the all-time world record he should be the #1 pick as the strongest man of all time or the possbily the greatest strength athlete of all time.
I have deeply analyzed all strength athletes across Strongman, Traditional (Ancient) Strongman, Powerlifting, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Armwresting and also the ancient strength athletes with those strength claims and according to the results, 2018/19/20 Thor is THE Strongest Man to have ever lived. I'm hoping to publish it as a research paper with a reputed University in future.
@@Chair991 how did you know he hit depth? Were you sitting alongside the side judge? The front angle can be deceptive. Only correct way is too judge from the side. Kirill posted some side vids on his instagram story and they all looked very close in terms of depth. None of the squats were buried.
Craziest thing is he has the potential to challenge Malanichevs 2513, while being the current WSM. If he breaks Malanichevs total, then what else is left to prove he’s the strongest man who’s ever lived? Pretty awesome to have that in our time.

So sad that he retires for boxing. He just kept on getting stronger & stronger. If he continued I bet he would be able to squat over 500kg, bench 280-300 & deadlift 520.
he has nerve damage on one of his hands and thats why his deadlift performance was limited. in strongman competitions straps are allowed, and he can lift 450+ on a regular bar.
he could improve 100 lbs just in his bench, the squat looked easy but not deep enough and his grip needs more work. He does actually have the WR in a couple years.
Watching it again, before Thor's 1,000 kg total attempt on 3rd December 2022, after two and a half year hiatus from lifting heavy weights, due to Boxing training. 💪🏻
It is interesting how different peoples powers are - magnues samuelsson weighed 150kg but benched 270kg x 2 with bad technique(zero bridge), but hafthor is 40kg heavier(on 5cm more height only), benches less but his other lifts are much stronger(only grip and arms magnus was stronger)
habs 76 Actually he probably would. Increasing your body weight does increase strength especially when strength training is added. The strength gained through increased body weight is not linear though. But you don’t see many 200 lb world strongest man competitors for this reason. To be that strong you have to be big. Why do you think everyone who has one worlds strongest man for the past 5 or 6 years has been over 400lbs?
I doubt he'll do it as more than a hobby to be honest, there's no money in powerlifting. He'll probably focus on strongman for as long as he can stay on top and then live off his supplement company or something.
This is his 1st powerlifting meet and his ONLY 40kg under the world record. He can definently break it and with his height amd still being able to do this is mind blowing a true viking bloodline BADASS
@@LOLAP95 Well the point when people say that is that he isn't a powerlifter, and even if he has done it before, it is very rare and a very long time ago, it is pretty much the same thing as if it were his 1st time.
@@Slashbag69 actually it seems that it slipped, which isn't because of grip strength,so i would more say chalks issues.but ye in the 501 he had straps AND a suit,he could have done more anyway when you see how easy 501 was to him.so i would say 440 maybe 450 in powerlifting meet with enugh training because the way to deadlift in powerlifting isn't the same as in strongman also.same squat i think, but a better bench press not that mych, maybe 260-265.so in his prime i think he woudl have done 1160-1175kgs which is better than manalychev!!!
The third squat was CLEAN!!! and EASY i might add. Thors dead stop bench was like in super slow mo. he has 575 in him, no doubt. Dead lift, grip failed but he can DEF get 940 dead, raw. Thor would go over 2500, NO DOUBT.
Thor didn't get the world record today but he was extremely close. There were 2 *tiny* failures that made him miss it. 1. He needed about 1 more inch of depth on his 3rd squat, this is not a strength issue, he pressed it with speed and ease, if he did 1 inch lower it wouldn't have changed his performance on the lift, but would have gotten him the white lights. 2. He was 3/4 up the deadlift on his 3rd attempt and still going, it was not grinding at all. The back strength and all is there EXCEPT his grip. Get his grip up by 5% and it would have been a go. If those 2 tiny mistakes didn't occur we would have seen a new all time world record today.
Solutions are getting stronger squat and learning hook grip. Still it's possible there is higher (than his 3rd) white lighted squats in history of untested federation.
He could try and hit his best as his 2nd attempts and just fail or break it. It seems he just got tired. His probably has that dead usually but not after a full meet in the same day.
@@19Kamau79 Stronger squat will of course help but he doesn't need a stronger squat to beat the atwr though. Did you see how fast 1014 went up? He could have went an inch or 2 deeper and still completed it just fine. He can currently do 1014 just fine.
If i had the money, trained like him and just wanted to i'd be stronger than him and WWAAAAAAAY more ripped - Every random internet stranger who hasn't gone to the gym once.
I also wanted to add his extreme ROM on the bench makes those lifts even more impressive....no curled up inchworm 2" ROM presses here. It takes savage strength to press as far he does to lock out.
James Strickland has the closest grip i’ve seen on bench and he benches a near 700lbs at sub 300lbs dude. That guy is probably the most impressive raw bench presser out there
You do know Thor was 230 at age 21 right? You’ve seen the transformation. Don’t get me wrong, his strength and size are impressive even juiced out of his mind....but he is juiced out of his mind
he takes almost no time to lift those weights lol that's real strenght, not bending your whole body and taking 3 minutes to pick something up. who needs that ?
Great squat and deadlift but bench not so much. Sarychev has done almost 200lbs more raw so if I was Thor that's what I would be working on most. His first deadlift looked like he could double it. Also something to be said for taller guys on the bench and squat in that they have to travel much longer distance in their movement. They may in fact even be stronger than someone who does the same weight but is shorter. But the deadlift they have an advantage.
10 kg over Ray Williams. Granted he had knee wraps instead of sleeves which gives a bit more to your squat but if he entered the IPF 120 kg+ class his only competition would literally be Ray.
Rich Lee At this class of weight I can believe it, but the sleeves give you some too. Even if he couldn’t beat Ray, he’s the only one he couldn’t beat since Ray is more than 40 kg over second place. They’re almost dead even on the bench, Ray’s got maybe a 50-75 lb advantage on the squat and Thor has almost the same with the deadlift. Thor would walk away with the Gold Medal for Deadlift, Silver for Squat and Silver Overall at worst if he entered the IPF. I’d really like to see it. He and Ray are the same age so they’re at similar stages. It would up Ray’s game too. He’s so comfortably ahead of his competition that he never fails a lift (except once or twice in squat depth, not because it was too heavy). He’s not forced to max out on any of his lifts.
Mai A I tend to believe Ray would do a good deal better untested. We all know drug tested is not the same as drug free but you have to cycle off, cant take the same things, etc.
Rich Lee This is true. It’s even more apparent in the women’s division. For example the strongest tested female raw bench of all time is Bonica Brown’s 150 kg bench. The tested record male bench is around double that. I realized even juiced there are extremely few women indeed who can clear 300 lbs or 135 kg on the bench, but a tested lifter? I can only think of 3 off hand that can clear that much and they all are the strongest in their weight classes even in total.
@Vinny Booboo the Olympics is full of people on peds tho. From boxing being corrupted af, shady anti doping policy between events and, people who get caught for taking shit coming back after their suspension even better and the hypocrisy of a few countries, the Olympics are one of the dirtiest form of sport
In ancient greece mans like him was on small panathineans and big Olympics races now im wander why this amazing strong man never be on Olympic games ? Hafthor you are real Viking much respect on you
