The rods i think are the weak point. Maybe it was the pistons but theyre only rated to about 300ish. If you turbo you will only be able to boost so much before theyre trash. I saw a recommendation saying if you turbo, upgrade the block and you should be okay in that area. Then you need to upgrade the brakes and suspension. It never ends because the 2.2s suspension and brakes are basic af so you have to rip out a 2.0s rear end and slap it in there to get 5 lug disc brakes with abs. Then you have to upgrade the front hub to 5 lug disc brakes, not to mention the performance brakes and calipers, axles and everything else.
I have the Saab LK9 (LSJ equal), on turbo cams, both at 212 deg duration @.05" with a stall speed of 2600. Which precision turbo would you recommend without a heavy turbo lag? Target about 400 whp. Due to local emission controls, it need an internal waste gate.
We'd not be able to do an internal wastegate, but you should be able to modify the parts to duct the wastegate exhaust back into the main exhaust, as some of our customers have done this. Your best bet would be the 5531 turbo.
Now im sorry this has nothing to do with the excellent turbo kit i see here but... Ive heard both ways here, how is it officially spoken.. "EEkotech" or "EchoTech". i think i remember a GM interview of some sort back in the day asking and they pronounced it echo like you do in this video but for whatever reason around here anyway i havent heard a single person say it that way and if i say echo people dont know what im talking about until i say eeko. Strange lol. Anyway on to a productive question, with this kit if one were to want a larger variant like the 6262 would there be any clearance issues with the firewall on a saturn ion sedan? From what ive noted it seems there is less room back there on the ions specifically autos size and firewall being closer (im positive its the same clearance as on the redline coupes besides the auto size which is the same as on the HHR autos (4t45). I know its pretty broad and you may not have gotten a chance to see yet how it would fit however i would like to swap from SC to turbo and was looking at my options of piecing together a kit when i came across this from you guys. The car has a built motor and IPT auto trans so its fairly serious now and firewall "hacking" wouldnt be the worst thing if nessesary or even the remote possability of having to reweld the dump tube to accommodate the auto trans. Ive come to be used to nothing being made for my application specifically lol. Either way thanks for your time.
You are correct sir. GM uses the "echo" pronunciation, as in the engine's intentions: Eco-nomical, Eco-logical. Not sure why folks try and pronounce the combination of letters "ec" as "eek", as that's not really a convention in English. All the same, American English does tend to persist in the long E sound of "ee" whenever the letter E presents at the beginning or end of a word, so I suppose it's yet another of the infinite vagaries and regional adaptations of the language.
very true lol. There is actually a part 2 to my post if you hit show more on my first post you probably missed that part. I appologize for typing a book on that part.
Thanks! Yes, this Hahn TurboSystem with Precision 6262 will fit on Ion. One may need to create extra clearance at the firewall, but that's pretty easy on these Delta-platform machines (Ion/Cobalt/HHR), and the instructions included show how. Hate to break it to you, but Ecology and Economy are pronounced with an "eek" sound at the beginning by almost everybody in the English speaking world, not an "ek" sound. so with that being said, that would be wrong.
i’ve got one of those you want to make sure to do the timing at around 100k. mine went out around 120k and thankfully didn’t bend any valves and shit. got it fixed along with water pump. good trans on 08s too at least the autos
my 2.2 hhr just blew up. I'm told the 2.2 can't handle the high rpms as good as the 2.0 and 2.4. Anybody here have experience with these 3 hhr engines and can verify which one is the best engine?
The 2.0 is gonna be your best bet. I own a 2.2 cobalt; the 2.2L ecotec engines have really weak connecting rods. I would turbo my 2.2 but forged internals are a must if you want the car to last. Forged pistons run $525 USD for the set, forged rods anywhere from $399-$439 USD. I haven't looked for forged crankshafts yet, but it wouldn't be a bad idea. The 2.0 is by far the strongest of the 3, the 2.4 following in 2nd and the 2.2 coming in last place but it is still a good platform to begin modifying on.
I've done extensive research specifically on the 2.2L for over the last 6 months and I can honestly say, as much as I love them, they can only produce so much performance before issues occur. I'm budget strapped so I'm grateful for what I have and using it to learn and get comfortable tinkering with vehicles.
@@hahnracecraft8172 The 2.4 is a twin cam Eco Tech as well, is it a different style platform basically? I've "herd" some parts are swappable from the cobalt's and what not.
The Ecotec bowed in 2003 in Cavalier and Sunfire, a unique year indeed, as there were a total of three engines available: pushrod 2.2L, Ecotec 2.2L, and TwinCam 2.4. By 2004, it was all Ecotec, and its own 2.4 version would debut not long after. But no, the Ecotec was a clean sheet of paper, and the older TwinCam is not an Ecotec.
@@hahnracecraft8172 The little bit of research I've done is, I've found that only 14% of my model were with the 2.4 and it does say eco tech on the coil cover over the valve covers. And I'm 100% sure its never been modified since I actually got it from my grand mother. Is there a way I could decode the vin or check a specific part of the engine or block to verify?
Ecotec as an engine series most certainly debuted in 2003 models. We were the first to turbocharge it as well, when GM contacted us to boost both a Cavalier and a Sunfire for the SEMA show that year. As stated, it shares no architecture with the 2000 2.4.
