So i did this musical in fifth grade and now that i watch this i realize that my teacher copied EVERYTHING from this video and she said it was her ideas...
As a director, who has directed this show, I can tell you that the cast was marvelous! Edna and Tracy were perfect, the heartfelt realness of Tracy was endearing. A real joy to watch!
This production is like broadway, the sets, the singing, the costumes. Tracy, Edna, Corny Collins, Penny, Amber and Velma in this cast could be on broadway. An amazing production
If it makes you feel better, I thought Alice Cooper was the lead singer of Alice In Chains. I like rock now and know that's not the case, but, I never really listened to anything but oldies until a few years ago. My friends and my husband got me into rock. >.
I wish I could too. I would love to play in some of these musicals. I have a running bucket list of people I want to play as. However, I live in a small community and the community theater can BARELY put on Shrek. (Which was a poor musical choice anyways)
Cup Cakie "I thought it was horrible.I could sing better any day" What show are you currently appearing in? We'd all love to come and see you sing better than this!
Amber has an excellent voice! Honestly this whole production is very impressive; excellent strength in the chorus, wonderful dancing, and honestly Penny is SO CUTE

my school is doing a production on "Hairspray JR." and i was lucky enough to be casted as Tracy Turnblad. We are two months in and so far its amazing and the people i work with are also truly amazing
OH MY GOSH WE DID AMAZINGLY WELL. Full house all 3 nights, I got a lot of compliments from friends and strangers for my role of Seaweed, would experience it al again in a heartbeat
March 24 and 26 2011 I was a senior and I was Motormouth Maybelle. Best three months of my life. Thankfully I have the dvd to look back at all the memories we made. :D
+ziad qumizakis this particular version of the play was done at a different time. When I did it, it was in 2011. I went to North Farmington High School.
+Sean Egan the 1988 version sucked. It wasn't the musical. That was the original, then 2002 was the Broadway show which is where the music was introduced for the first time. 2007 is when the movie came out. The stage play is taken after the Broadway production. :)
The girl who played Tracy use to be the assistant teacher for my musical theater class. She is so talented. I remember when she told us she was going to do this. But I graduated in 2011 so idk if this was just put on RU-vid late or what
((Update to my 8 month old comment)) I finally did this for a school play at my school and I got to play the main male role which was Link :3 I was happy that I got to kiss the girl of my dreams in front of my whole school. Then after the play I actually actually got to ask her to be my girlfriend and she said yes ~smiles~
I just did this with my school. The actors for tracy and Wilbur were dating and the actors for link and amber were dating so i could only imagine how awkward it was for them
Most of the comments are "i got this part, that part". WELL GOOD FOR YOU, MY SCHOOL OR ANY ORGANISATION WHERE IM AT DON'T EVEN HAVE ANY MUSICALS OR SHOWS
I remember seeing this live when I was 5 I lost my tooth in an ice cream on the way out I remember having nightmares for 6+ years, of them spraying hairspray at the end (which didn't happen) and my mum's hair going big and poofy. Hairspray is still my favourite movie/theatre. I loved every part of this now and then. 💜
i cant get over how good this actually is i wish we could of done this at my school, the girl who plays penny could easily play her in the proper version of the show
This is one of my top 3 favorite musicals (along with Rent and Hamilton). I’ve seen it live multiple times. As a resident of the Baltimore/DC suburbs, the local flavor makes it even more appealing. The Corny Collins show is based on a teen dance show that aired on local Baltimore TV in the 60’s called the Buddy Deane show.
I'm playing Tracy Turnblad in my University's production in Dec and this was fantastic to watch! I hope we can do it half as good as you, amazing! Well done to all! xx
The Ritz Theatre Company presents Hairspray When: Show dates January 6-February 5, 2011 Where: The Ritz Theatre 915 White Horse Pike Haddon Township, NJ 08107 Filmed Oakland,New Jersey/America - February 6, 2011 Who: Melissa Tepperman (Tracy) Matthew Reher (Corny) Sarah Pearson (Velma) Mary Lamb (Amber) Bruce Curless (Edna) Denise Augustyn (Penny) Paul Weagraff (Wilbur) Kyrus Westcott (Seaweed) Tania Granger (Motormouth) Chad Parsons (Link) Janet Wilkie (Prudy).
I know I’m very late to this comment but thank you so much! I’m doing a school project and couldn’t find this information anywhere, you just saved my grade
Absolutely beautiful, had the jazz and heart of a stunning show, which means a lot to me because I am a huge fan of Hairspray so thank you for this great production of Hairspray!
Actually her voice and perkiness and dancing outstand any shortness... So if the boys were short? John Waters original Hairspray was displaying the contridiction / in our society racism sexism ableism (fat phobia) Nice job this production would make any writer happy... And it improved with age (the inuendo and reduced unintented racism that was acceptable in 1 decade is no longer acceptable
If you are still in school then just go for it!! I got into my schools production of Guys and Dolls this year even though I have NEVER done any acting or anything like that, but I know I'm a good singer
thing is im really bad at singing but i always preform broadways in my kitchen when im home alone :') just wish i had the guts to do it,,,, but thanks!! Tillysnow1
Do it! It's great fun! We've literally just finished doing Hairspray at our school this week! We were so proud of what we achieved and you feel so happy getting through it, but we are all so gutted that it's ended now :(! I played a Dynamite and I enjoyed it soooo much! I totally recommend it, you'll enjoy it so much ;)
Just finished this production at my high school as Corny! This is like the 4th one I've watched on RU-vid since this past weekend haha you could say I'm a little bit nostalgic
Seaweed is so much better looking than Link (in my opinion!) I've always loved Seaweed as a character though, he's so slick and smooth, full of swagger and moves like jagger! Also, does anyone know a name that would be equivalent to Seaweed, because I'd like to do a generbent version of the character! :)
It's definitely not the only Broadway version, but it is a Broadway version. I don't think this version traveled the country. Although, I think it's the best Broadway version I've seen on youtube.
You REALLY have to give them props!!!!! It’s not easy to do a play let alone a musical!!! Let alone with hairspray around them. I try to sing while I’m at home doing my hair and always choke on my hairspray
I know this reply is like 3 years too late, but they don’t actually use real hairspray in productions. They use a water spray, gives the effect of the real thing but way less dangerous to the actors. Although the thought of having to wash all the hairspray off your skin from dancing in clouds of it, is quite the mental image hahaha still impressive nonetheless
When I was eight I remember having to do this for my summer camp, and Baltimore was my favorite song to preform for, I still have the entire soundtrack downloaded on my (Currently) seven year old Ipad mini.
We did this play during our 8th grade, and it was a success!! And this was the first performance I did as Velma that I discovered my singing and acting talents. :))
Wow that cast of hairspray were fantastic! The Set, Costumes, and the talent of all the cast. I was blown away n shakin ma booty on down to baltimore. lol
This was so fun to watch! Our community theater is doing auditions for this in a few months and I'm hoping to try out for Tracy, so it was great to watch the performance. The set was phenomenal!
I wish my school put on shows like this, but we have a really low budget and our ceiling is apparently too low. We have a bigger stage in the gym, but we’re not allowed to have shows on the stage, so we’re kinda just kept in this room. We never really do musicals because our old drama teacher didn’t like them.
Some of the cast and crew that I found online, some of them might not have been in this particular show but in the production at some point. From The Ritz Theater in NJ Cast Melissa Tepperman-Tracy Turnblad Matthew Reher-Corny Collins Mary Lamb-Amber Von Tussle Chad Parsons-Link Larkin Bruce Curless-Edna Turnblad Denise Augustyn-Penny Pingleton Sarah Pearson-Velma Von Tussle Paul Weagraff-Wilbur Turnblad Kyrus Westcott-Seaweed J. Stubbs Tania Granger-Motormouth Maybelle Creatives & Crew Brian Rivell director / choreographer Marc G. Dalio-music director Mark Lenard-scenic designer Rob Paluso-costume designer
The best version of Hairspray was on the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas!!!!!!! They were amazing!!!!!!! I wish I could see it again with that cast!!!
I've only ever been part of a Hairspray song once. In my theatre group, we did a music show where we sing a collection of musical songs. In the Hairspray section I was in a shortened version of You can't stop the beat, and finished it with a little solo dance. I would love to do more one day, fingers crossed. What I'd give to be on that stage with them, just fantastic! :)
My school is actually doing Hairspray Junior as our musical this year. I'm only a part of the Chorus, but I still love the idea of this. Haven't even watched the video yet and I know it will be good.
