I can't tell you how excited I am for this remake of Hair History. I loved the old series back in the days and I am so glad you picked this up again! Great videos 💕

I’m loving this series and how you’re including the original source images. I am also once again requesting the French hood when you get to the 1500s.

In one of Ruth Goodman's books (How to Be a Victorian, I think) she talks about how natural bristle brushes, like boar's hair, were used to help clean and distribute the oils in hair when people weren't washing their hair all the time. No wonder we hear about women brushing their hair with 100 strokes a day or something like that.

I have very oily hair so I tried brushing it out with a boar brush. Didn't work, made my hair even oilier.
@AnnekeOosterink

@@explodingkitten3331 Just using a boar bristle brush isn't enough, if your hair care means daily washes for example you're going to always over produce the oil because you keep stripping it, no brushing it out will help. That, and hair scalp is used to producing a lot of oil if you wash it away a lot, so any change in care is going to take a while to lower production. It's not going to be fixed in a week or even a month. Plus, a bristle brush doesn't remove the oil, it brings the oil from your scalp down to the roots.

I highly recommend doing as medieval women and buying some lice combs and using them. I can’t say I knew before this that medieval women used fine tooth combs to clean out their scalp and hair, but it is making me feel very validated indeed. So, I have curly/wavy (spends on how I style it), and very dry hair that only gets washed every week or two. This is very fortunate because I’m disabled, and there’s no physical way I could wash any more frequently than that anyway. But, you do still get buildup, and a fine tooth comb is my favourite way of dealing with that. Like I said, my hair is dry, and that’s because my scalp is also dry (all of my skin is very dry), and the at means that I do get the odd flake. Fine tooth combs get rid of all the scalp buildup and they help to distribute the oils (what little I have) further down the hair shaft which helps to keep my hair healthy and strong. Also recommend boar bristle brushes for distributing oils. I’m lucky that my hair is just straight enough that I can use a fine tooth comb on it (especially if I’ve kept my hair in a braid as I often do- I spend a lot of time in bed, I need my hair contained in a comfortable and easy way that will also protect against friction damage). Though if I’ve actually worn my hair out or something (and it’s therefore MUCH curlier than if I’ve chucked it straight into a braid), I do need to put plenty of detangler in as I work my way down to the fine tooth comb, starting from a wide tooth comb. It’s also a good time to add hair oils, which I do at least twice in between washes. Even with redistributing my natural oils down the hair shaft, there’s just nowhere near enough to reach the ends, so a little bit of help is nice. It also smells lovely, which also helps with stretching out the time between washes. Also, every couple of months, a few hours before my wash, I spray my scalp with a light chemical exfoliant (I use the Some By Mi AHA BUA PHA toner). It really helps at getting rid of buildup and helping exfoliate my scalp. It’s still skin, it needs exfoliation, and my skin tends to need help with that. And during winter, when I’m not doing the exfoliating step, I’ll often moisturise my scalp with a heavy moisturiser the night before wash day. It’s all sounds a lot, but it’s still a lot less effort than washing every day or two (which would not only be impossible for me, but would also destroy my hair). And my hair is incredibly healthy, with a lot less time and effort spent on it than most people have to. Excuse the essay, but I know the way I do my hair is unusual for most modern people, so I like to share tips that might help others.

Really appreciate this comment, emphasising that combing distributes the natural oils, not just cleaning, and also the fact that scalps need exfoliation. I also need help with this and did not know there are products that aid so will be trying that out - I often feel I need to wash my hair due to the build-up on my scalp rather than because the hair is dirty… I wash it about once a week.

That’s an interesting method, I usually end up washing more often than I’d like, damaging my hair no matter how careful I try to do it, but perhaps if I use a fine toothed comb and distribute the goodz I can delay the wash some more. Thank you for this essay

I love this new series. My question is what pins did they use?
@AnnekeOosterink
@AnnekeOosterink 2 года назад
From the basic search that I did, they used U-shaped pins, as well as straight pins (so I-shaped). Morgan Donner did a video on bronze age (I think, they were based on archaeological finds) hair pins, which were also just straight I-shaped pins, and a metal coil to keep the end of a braid contained. :)

I love you love your content love the research I'm totally into it I have a very very long hair and so I'm intrigued by these braids these intricate braids that involve the long hair that was you know very kind of a taboo according to the church which just goes to show that even in a time when you know you watch A History channel documentary and they make it seem like you know the church was just you know you want against the church you are getting f****** beheaded but women are going to look good and they're going to have their hair laid they're going to have their hair suede and I don't care whether it's 6:12 14 14 or 2021 or we are winning and I just love the camaraderie across centuries of women just loving to do their hair and showing their personality through their hair and your personality captures this perfectly you're so bubbly yet informative and just so much fun to watch so girl keep doing what you're doing you're doing a great job all of your videos are so funny the bum pad video when you were wearing the Kim k outfits I was dying that was so funny as a fellow skinny mini I completely appreciated it so nevertheless so let's just hold out everything is a cycle and you know the slim figure will be back in soon enough and we will be ruling the roost as we should know I mean everybody's beautiful but you know what I mean sometimes it feels good to have your body type be the body type that is considered beautiful at the time and you know there's nothing wrong with that in my opinion so looking forward to the you know slender physiques coming back ... And until then you might catch me in an 18th century bum pad under my dress and I have no shame about it so thank you girl and keep doing what you're doing you're doing a great job and I foresee huge growth in your channel people of history people love historical fashion and you do a great job it's informative it's funny and it's just enjoyable to watch so yeah love ya
