Did that iron stand even have the sleep function switch in it? Wire runs to base? Was it made of plastic or metal? Only thing I noticed is the beep is a lot quieter on the clone, the genuine Hakko beep is very loud.
The fx-951 is by far one of the best compat units i have ever used in production. The knock offs are sold everywhere and i feel sorry for those that buy them
I was going to say.. First off I paid $350 USD for a kit, well over $90.. And mine is very, very well made. I just tried to bend my iron and it's stiff as a board. Mine sits solid on my bench. I wanted to see a negative review for the best station I've ever owned, and of course it's a knock off being advertised as authentic. Just seeing the unit he showed I could tell you it's not made by Hakko. Mine is made in Japan not China. With a nice shiny authentic Hakko sticker. I don't understand why he wouldn't say IT'S A KNOCKOFF?? Unless he's being paid to dis Hakko or he doesn't know. But I wouldn't buy anything but Hakko since I got mine. I solder like a pro ever since I received mine.
I got mine from Aliexpress, thinking it was the real thing. The reason I didn't buy it from a proper store is that I couldn't find a 220V version. At first I did have contact problems with the tip as well as the base unit but once I got it working the problems didn't reappear. The handle does feel cheap at the place where the yellow part meets the blue part because it's only connected by the 2 black plastic clips. Also I doubt it's ESD safe like it claims. However it does heat up fast and it hasn't burnt down my house yet in the 3 years I've been using it. Definitely an upgrade over the 20$ plug-in-the-wall soldering irons. At about 70 euros that I bought it I'd say it's pretty expensive for a ripoff.
Having been a happy Hakko customer for more than 20 years (starting from 939、941 to FM202), I'd say genuine Hakko worth every penny. Don't bother with Chinese clones.
To be fair, there probably are a few different manufacturers of 951 clones, some are probably better than others. Mine 951 clone came with feet etc. But yeah, handle is a bit worthless, but original isn't very good either. And the stand is same shit as you got and mine was 50c high temp. But I don't think many people buy the more expensive 951 clones anymore since there are the "t12 soldering station" for half price which uses same tips, but ALOT better UI than the 951(which is AWFUL!) There are both a STC and STM32 version of them, the stm32 is better from what i've read, least of all since it's probably easier to program if you are so inclined.
Yeah my only complaint would be the flimsy stand. The original one isn't good either. I took the cord that triggers standby mode, annoying as hell. Often or not I put the iron onto the stand and it falls off or goes into standby, after several seconds I pull it out and the temperature is too low, boooooo.
For the real original one you should be able to set the standby, but 200C is usually good and recovers in a few second back to 300-350C. The original real stand can also be adjusted if the base is at a different height so the iron doesn’t fall out. I’ve never had mine fall out, but I did make a slight adjustment when I first received it as you can see in this part of the video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dYjMsuih01A.htmlm57s
You're absolutely correct. Mine is usually set at 350 degrees, to have standby at 300 would be kind of silly, so I just pulled the cord. The iron falling out is mostly due to my impatience. The stand is still finicky, but it's not that piece of shit in this video showcasing the rip.
True, nothing best this one in poor quality. Heck, my first digital iron (not a 15/25watt firestick) was a tenma and it was horrible like this one. I’d say a fire hazard, I had to wrap electrical tape around the base of the iron so when it was put down it would stay in place. And I think that was half of what Dave paid for this fake one, but the tenma still works 10 years strong, lol. I’m sure his won’t last a decade, be lucky if he sees 2 years, maybe 4?
I'd say he'd be lucky to get over 1 year. The controller unit could last 2+ years, but that piece of shit iron lol. I'd probably break it out of frustration. The FX951 can be had on Chinese surplus sites for $150~ish. Without the iron, it's $80-90. Really don't understand why people can't just get those. They typically look bad but they work, and with a good clean they look nice. Stuff is often missing though, like the key to alter settings one must plug into the unit. But then these can be bought individually.
Maybe you can Try BST-863 it looks similar to the quick and has c14 socket. Wonder are the internals any good since it is half the price of quick. That ripoff should not have right to be produced.
I had a cheap iron for my genuine 951. They suck bad. So glad to finally have an genuine one. The cable is longer, the tips click firmly, it has a light and the plastic is better and thicker. I was really sad when I broke my first one to find out they go for $80+ and ended up buying a cheap one. At least it worked. I was able to find a genuine one recently on sale for 50 so I bought it and I'm glad I did
To stop it from wobbling stick the rubber feet on it that is usually provided with the iron. I have two of these irons and yes the user interface and silly plastic key sucks big time. The Achilles heel with these irons is that sometimes the contacts in the actual soldering pencil can become intermittent which is probably something that you don't experience with the genuine ones. Yes the soldering stand is a bit dicky with the thin bit of wire but what I miss is the automatic timeout that is implemented in the genuine stand. However the tips are dirt cheap and you can get around the limitations if you are on a budget. You can't really complain based on the price.
The real complain is that buying non-genuine products you are promoting this shady business practice of manufacturing knock-offs! Buy genuine if you can and it is worth it! Once you buy the genuine HAKKO, you will never go back!
@@salmanrashid6245 The genuine one and the knockoff imitation of these irons would have to be the most brain dead user interface you could ever use. There is a redesign of the controller called KSGER which you can use with the genuine Hakko tips and is how the controller should have been made.
Me, a university student:- ah, I don't have temperature controlled iron n burnt that ic, $25 for stm32 t12 kits? $2 for tips? As long as the power draw is decent with its use and temperatures are maintained enough I can deal with other stuff as well. But well, i guess its true for most others in similar situation as well & personally with particle allergy and other related stuff, i'd spend more towards proper ventilation
I have never had any complaints about my stand, and although the handle is plastic, and it could work much better, it doesn't feel like it is going to fall apart in my hands. After using it for a little while though, it worked so much better than my old hakko, I really can't complain. I can't vouch for the fakes though. I've never used one.
My uni has them. We were once required to solder stuff in the labs in fear of "burning ourselves at home (laughable)" and I was forced to use one of those junks. It's one of those fx-888 clones. It was just painful. They also have the shitty canonical tips that I'm not used it.
Haha that case looks like someone's first time designing something to be injection moulded. Guess they realized a bit too late about the mould's taper? ;)
Lol that stand. The stand is supposed to hold the iron very well, it is supposed to be connected to the main unit. When the iron is on the stand, it articulates slightly, the plates on the back come in contact, and the iron is cooled down. Standby time! Can't see this feature on that piece of rubbish.
He has an older 936 clone, completely different irons. This 951 have heater integrated in tip and on the older 936 the heater is in the handle and you only change just the tip. 936 is much slower to heat up and react to temp changes.
There are probably multiple ripoff versions of a successful product like the FX-951. Anyways, I use a cheap no-name soldering iron from eBay for 40€ delivered. It has two buttons up/down to set the temperature in 10°C incements, but it doesn't even show when it's reached its target temp, also it takes a hell of a lot of time to heat up, but meh, I'm just a hobbyist and for using it a couple times a month, it's totally fine for that.
The clone still has a wobbly base & the sponge is still to big lol but it doesn't come with that shitty handle thank god. Mine seems to heat up quicker than yours although that may be due to the tip resistance who knows lol
I almost went to throw it away and then I thought about it and realised it was wrong. So in the end the only dodgy thing really is the foam pad. Im not sure why yours didn't come with rubber feet to stick on.

I have a genuine hakko 951, and a fm-203 and they are both amazing, the quality is just amazing super sturdy super hot, so much thermal mass on the tips, they also heat up really fast
Alleluiah some one who calls it like it is..... The button temp control and lockout card is an awful feature. Copy or no copy !. THANK YOU - totally agree
Ok I fixed the stand, I cut-down the crappy wand so now it uses ts100 soldering bits perfectly. No longer junky. Have a look :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eAkJiz5K9rY.html also mine came with rubber feet that I had to stick on the unit.
I bought the quicko t12-952 for 30 something euro from aliexpress and has been great so far. Has a better handle, good screen with some options a smaller formfactor. I'd say try that one instead of that badly copied Hakko.
Cut the plastic of the wand to see if it’s glass fiber reinforced or just abs trash. Also that stand looks to be for the smaller wand that hakko has. I’ll just save for a JBC. JBC is to Hakko as Ralph Lauren is to Rustler.
When I got my FX888D (real) I kept reading spend the money on a knockoff FX-951 instead (even Louis Rossman said that) personally I'm glad I didn't at least the 888 has good quality and known reliability. Next stop Pace
If you know its fake, there is nothing much to bitch about if you paid rock bottom price, as long as those electronics hold up, and they seem to from users buying em, yeah, dodgy stand, dodgy bottom plate, and same dodgy menu like on a real Hakko, but if it drives and you can't afford a Ferrari, go for it.
That's not a real Hakko, it's a counterfeit. The 90 dollar price tag should have tipped you off, the real station is over 200usd. Also, I'm pretty sure the real ones are made in Japan, not China. You ripped yourself off.
A couple of thing I’m wondering about: Why test all that cheap garbage. Why not analyze a buyer of one of those items instead? A’m also wondering why you, David is so keen on NOT testing for example an OKI solder station. You could test your conviction, that you need to be able to fine tune adjust temperature. I just bought such a used one. Maybe 15 years old and spare hand piece is readily available. I don’t need to talk about it. I don’t need to think about it. It just solder. And no button, lcd or dial can stop functioning.
I just laugh at those that buy known fake equipment that doesn't work! Especially if it is AC powered that can burn your house down! LOL. Just brilliant. I'm a bit surprised that it wasn't taken apart first though. Could have checked for some basic safety before powering it up.
Dave, Imagine you sitting down after work and watching a EEVblog in the family front room where your kids are playing, when all of a sudden Dave says "shit" and your kids look at you like what are you watching dad. You may be ok with with swearing in front of your kids, but others are NOT. Its these types of parents that teach their kids to swear and make them think it's just another typical word to use. So when my kids come home from school who have learned a new word from these parents who are unable to have any form of self control or unable to express themselves without swearing. Learn to control your mouth. You supposed to be somewhat of a professional, so act like it.
