I think making them swarm and run around would be cool, while also lowering their health considerably compared to hl2. Have a lot of them. Biggest issue with the whole game is that there are less enemies that overall take too many bullets each.
@@PurpleColonel I actually both like and dislike this. On one hand, yeah, the fights feel underwhelming and you don't really feel that badass, but at the same time, there's a whole new level of strategy that I found was involved that you didn't really get in the original half life games. Reminded me a lot of Metroid prime's fights actually. I just wish Hard mode actually changed encounters to be more difficult with more enemies in better tactical positions instead of just making you take more damage.
@@TheOGjarilo and then leg again on another one that jumped in front of the first one while you were looking at the second one, then a fourth one shows up behind you right as you realise you need to reload.
Leggies! Jokes aside, I love how the music is full of percussions. Especially knowing that antlions use vibrations to detect other creatures. It's extremely fitting.
I hated antlions in HL2, but seeing them human sized and awesome looking in HL:A completely switched it around and, with this OST, made fighting antlions one of the best parts of the game. Also I wonder what it was like for the combine, watching a hardhat-wearing idiot flail about trying to reload every 5 seconds
In Half-Life Alyx, working antlions are not canonical. They did not leave the caves. They look completely different and I thought all game that this is a new kind. Valve even came up with other colors for them, but it was possible to leave the old ones. Their feet glow unpleasantly, it looks disgusting. No offense to Valve, because antlions are my favorite creatures from Zen, but damn, they're completely different.
I like it, it has a rebel-cyberpunk feel. Wich is fitting for a character like Alyx. Like how Opossing force has a different soundtrack compared to half life, but it fits perfectly for Shepard
@@mistercr0wbar400 Nah man.. He really didn't. The soundtrack is one of my biggest complaints about HL:A. This sounds nothing like what Kelly Bailey would make.
Shooting the shotgun feels so satisfying, but I felt like the shotgun was hella inconvenient against antlions. Antlions were probably the only enemy where the best weapon is the pistol. The shotgun was effective but you "waste" a lot of ammo on them. The SMG was pretty bad because it took multiple shots to cut off a leg and it was more difficult to properly aim. The pistol however was both accurate and you could one-tap all of the bodyparts.
I didn't use the shotgun on antlions because it felt like a waste of ammo, as a "shotgun main" for HLA. I feel like the director doesn't give you enough ammo for the shotgun, even when you use it regularly.
Yah, I mean the guy who made this was heavily active in the industrial scene in the 90s so thats probably why. Should check out his band from the time, steel pole bathtub, pretty good stuff.
the way that the antlions walk and the music just matches it is amazing, but also scary since it kinda looks like it's pissed off at you and is wanting to kill you
This song was so clearly inspired by the Vortal Combat theme from Episode 2. Which also was a massive battle against Antlions while the Vorts and Rebels help you fight them off. All while Alyx lays there near death.
This music is especially tense because so far, you've been fighting small creatures, people shooting at you from a distance and stupid, shuffling zombies. This is the first time in the game you face big enemies marching towards you at a steady pace and there's a LOT of them
@TheUltimateGamer245 agreed, HL2 Antlions would shred the combine forces present in the zoo, they're like giant ants that are easy to kill, but has overwhelming speed and numbers
Honestly? HL2 music was a bit too gloomy. When I was younger I used to play with music off because it gave me bad vibes (except for epic parts, like antlion battle in Ep2). The overall world & character design is enough to evoke that particular feeling. You don't need to amplify that with music
I was worried that the antlions would be scary in VR. I'm glad they don't fly at you in this game. They're my absolute favorite enemy in the game, with lightning dogs being a close second.
completely agree, antlions are scary as hell in half life 2 but in this game they made them work so well. lightning dogs and antlions are definitely my favorite in the game too, the lightning dogs are so friggin cool!! yeah i know this comment was 2 years ago i just wanted to reply lol
This song is awesome, but listening to it now is bringing up the pure anxiety that I experienced during the one antlion/combine fight in the train yard lol. I hope I'm not the only one who died a good number of times there.

@@the_openers_of_eyes8 I mean, the health stations hold an antlion grub, which have healing properties, as discovered in the mines in HL2:E2. They could still have those properties, or similar ones.
I think Valve took inspiration from the Akrid of Lost Planet when they designed antlions for HLA. The orange being weak points you need to shoot limbs off, minus getting energy from orange liquid.
