Why is my Tv screen split in half?
This is Ash from Ash Healmypc99 bringing you another repair tip. Warning! This is a mainly a Diagnosis video and temporary quick fix tip only. Apologies for not including the actual repair video as I wasn’t planning to upload this to RU-vid when I filmed this. Hopefully someone may still find this useful as I give some tips at the end of the video. If you want to see how I managed to temporarily fix the half black screen problem, from this to this then stay tuned.
This is how I fixed it! I used a few of the same food stick that you saw in the video, cut them into a few pieces to fit under the ribbon cable which was causing the contact image. I also secured them in place with some Blu Tack so that if there was any pressure applied onto the ribbon cable it would no longer distort the image.
Immediately, I did not replace the frame nor bezels as I wanted to see how much of a fix it was. After around a week or so it did not show any sign of half black screen. So I put everything back together, frames, bezels.
However after that it occasionally caused some half black screen. When that happened I just pressed around the frame where I knew the problem was, it would haphazardly return to a clear full picture. However over the next 3 weeks the problem would come back more frequently and each time would require more pressure applied.
This became very annoying and finally I gave up and bought a new TV. I did some research and found out that this problem is very common indeed and many others have ended up replacing their TV. A long term repair is not advisable in most cases due to the high cost of replacing any of the troublesome parts.
In conclusion there is a rant coming up! Manufactures of electrical components, especially at the budget end, are using more and more cheap components included in their build. Some say they are deliberately including a fixed term component which will die within a specific time frame, usually within the usual period.
Since I've been repairing a few electronics this has become quite clear over the years. I've seen many products fail the day after the warranty was over. While I am not directly accusing LG or any other company for that matter, I am advising each and every one of you to “expect” cheap end products to fail within a short lifetime, depending on your luck. For some electronics it might be worth considering getting extended warranty, you need to weigh the cost of repairing versus the cost of buying a new one.

I am electronics technician and repair TVs and have to comment that some of the stuff people write and comment are like WTF.... call the manufacturer with some of your questions and stop asking people to "guide" you on repairs, this gentleman is showing how to address this issue in particular. These are not toasters, they are digital devices with switch mode power supplies.

Ive been fixing tvs for about 30 years and the flat panel tvs are such pieces of crap im about to give up and stick to vintage gear repair. Power supply cap replacement pays ok but led replacement is major surgery and unless you change them all, it might be back during your repair warranty period. Cost prohibitive. It seems no manufacturer has more than one year of faith in their sets, and sometimes replacement boards are no longer available, even after only a few years. The only people making money in tv repair are the courriers and the parts dealers. Extended warranty is now greatly encouraged. AND KEEP YOUR RECIEPT!!!! Sound systems seem to have turned into a pile of crap too. Best wishes brother.

Great video- it inspired to take on my 55" Samsung which had this exact symptom. I isolated the problem to one of the same ribbon cables you showed, but in my case it wasn't a matter of mechanical deformation, but rather heat. That chip or whatever it is inside the ribbon cable gets pretty hot (too hot to touch) and I tried blowing canned air on it- not touching the cable, just blowing cool air over or under it. Every time the flickering stopped, then resumed after a minute or two as the cable warmed up again. It sounds wacky but I think the bumps on the inside of the metal frame are intended to gently touch the cable and conduct away some of the heat. Only one cable seemed to be affected, so I took some aluminum adhesive tape and doubled it up under the cable to act as a spring, and added a couple of layers to the inside of the metal frame to improve contact- and I only did the offending cable. I left the others alone! (If it ain't broke...) With the frame reinstalled the flickering seems to have gone away. Thanks for posting the video- it may have saved me a bundle!

Maybe a damaged cable or board. I doubt your screws reached the lcd, which is thin and located at the very front surface.

Hey I got 2 problems I just bought the Sony Inzone m9 4K monitor and have already 2 problems. 1. Screen goes half black when I start a game on ps5. 2. Screen goes black for 10 sec and comes back but all colors are grey . The screen goes normal when i switch the HDMI slot from 1 to 2 and going back to 1 Or when I plug out the HDMI cable and plug it in back.

I don’t know exactly what I did but my Dynex tv which had the same problem is now working. I opened it after unplugging and brushed off all the dust accumulated throughout the 9 years I’ve had it. I tightened the screws on the metal piece which covers the board inside the top of the tv and that was it. It’s been good for over 24hrs so far.

Mine randomly did that today but I have a similar problem- mine is shadowed on one side, i can still see the image but its like theres a shadow on it. I'll give it a tap (i'm not taking it apart) and see what happens.

I noticed this with my sharp tv. We used to push the tv on the left side and it would correct itself but eventually did not. I thought that perhaps I fixed it when I cleaned the display ribbons and reinserted them thinking this was the issue. It worked fine, but the issue has come back and it appears to come back after the tv is in use for many hours which makes me to believe it is an overheating issue. When I unplug the tv and leave it alone for several hours, you can hear the tv crack inside as if the components are all readjusting and changing shape. When I turn the tv back on, I have to push a little here and there on the screen and it corrects itself. It also makes me to believe it is due to the hdmi component parts on that side of the tv.

Great video. I have an LG 42' Tv with the same issue. It's very annoying as the tv is working perfectly other than this fault. I am not prepared to scrap a perfectly good working tv. What i'd like to know is....WHAT is actually causing the ribbon cables to fail?...Is it the connection to the board? The tiny copper wires within the ribbon cable itself becoming broken??...Just what is it?!!! My tv is 6 years old and i love it and as i say i will not just give up and scrap it.! Thanks for your reply. My TV is now with some Technicians for a proper diagnosis. They mentioned to me that because of EU law the TV manufactures had to stop using LEAD in their solder. WHAT???? !! Another good reason to vote 'OUT'...! I'll update you when i have the diagnosis.

I have the same problem, it just appeared 4 months ago, half left of my screen is blurry when I turn on my TV, for like 15 - 30 min shows blurry colors of whatever image is behind it, but mine shows some different pattern, blurry then like if it's trying to get signal on that half screen, then fixes by itself, weird thing is that I hear a small whirling noise from the back of the TV (not the speakers) very faint noise... once the image is fixed it stays that way until the TV is turned OFF... Usually I leave it ON all day, Very nice 1080P LCD TV 46" bought around 2006-07, unbreakable for 16-17 years XD, Haven't tried any fixes yet, it happens on all 3 HDMI devices connected + FTA signal....

How long do you reckon the average tv will last - built in obsolescence ie cheap caps and wrongly sized resistors - its obvious who are the culprits - Panasonic used to be the best - all the engineer guys in our tv factory (JVC - East Kilbride) used to own Panasonic tv's and would never touch a JVC. In my electrical repairs I am finding the average lifespan of a modern tv to be around 4 years. In the "good old days" it was 10-20 years with CRT - Quite a change eh! I have a 30 year old Marconiphone that is still working and has never been repaired. Just cleaning the dust out once every 6 months is what will help your tv last a lot longer especially if its a CRT.

***** Very true and there is definitely something in this obsolescence - I've just repaired my LG PK590 Plasma - typical psu top single resistor fault but it ended up with the cpu board and z-sus boards being damaged as well but thankfully the spare parts were available on ebay for less than £50 so i got it back up and running - I was on the badcaps forum and one of my repair buddies tells me he cant believe my tv failed as he has had 6 customers with exactly the same television failing all within the same month - Food for thought! Plasma televisions very bad design - at least my LG had heatsinks on the Y-sus chips thats probably why that board hasnt gone up in smoke yet! Always best to buy a complement of spares for your telly before the spares dry up! Ive now repaired the z-sus but the cpu board is a goner and hard to repair so just paid a £10 spot for a new one - beats the price of parts from the manufacturer - they quoted me £100 just for the cpu board! Havin a laff - no wonder I see so many plasmas in the junkyard - saw a 100 inch Plasma the other day and asked if i could have it but they dont even want to help save the environment by repairing these they just go into landfill or crushed and reclaimed! Do you do board repairs or is it straight board swaps these days? Not many really electronic engineers left its all board swapping , same with computers - i rmember the days we used to have to solder and repair I/O cards and ISA modems lol

I am embarrassed to say to this but I got lazy while hanging my 32 in Vizio TV by myself in my RV (home), and ran a screw through the top in the middle straight down. Good video but my feeling is there is no way a manufacture can design a product to fail so closely to the warranty expiration date as there are too many variables. One main variable is time, The warranty is set from the date of purchase, not determined by number of hours in operation. I do agree that a manufacture certainly can make a rough estimate as to how long a component lasts. One example of "do not care" designs is the very common failures at the battery charger plug in connection. This connection is a problem on many different types and models of laptops. Well at least this video showed me that a half failed LCD is not an inverter problem. 85.00 for a new LCD for my Sony Vaio.

I agree fully. These units aren't technically designed to fail. But designed to be cheap because nobody is willing to pay full price for anything these days. Remember back in the early 2000s when plasma was the latest thing and the pioneer tv was close to $10k?

WaFfLeFuR I worked for a TV store in CT back then. I was there for the first flat screen we had ever seen to be sold. Never even had one in store but a wealthy customer wanted one and had us order it and deliver it. Price tag was closer to 25k than 10k. And it was before they even broadcast anything in HD. I hated having that tv on the truck and having to deliver it. I just kept imagining dropping it. I often wonder to myself if that guy still has that tv up because he paid such a retarded price for it and won't upgrade for some "cheap LED flatscreen" lol

It could be a problem with the cable connecting your motherboard to the LCD display, or LDC display itself. Best is to open and check. My guess is you need to replace the screen.

Literally, today is exactly a year and a day from buying my monitor. The warranty ended yesterday and exactly the same problem as the one in this video has occurred. Not happy at all
