In California, the road rules are a little more lax than the UK. It is a world where a road-going Can-Am car can be part of the LA bumper-to-bumper traffic. However, where a bumper should be, there is a huge wing mounted next to a straight-piped raw V8 that sounds like Thor gargling nails. The car in question is Oilstainlab's internet-breaking Half11. It is the 'what if' creation of the incredibly talented design twins Nikita and Iliya Bridan. What if the Porsche 911 was the base for its Can-Am and Le Mans cars of the '70s?
We caught up with the Oilstainlab duo at their California studio/workshop to talk us through how on earth their journey led them to one of the coolest machines we've had the privilege of filming.

Road rules should preserve the safety of others, I think we can more or less all agree on that. Many places go quite overboard on regulating how you can modify your car, but then they’re totally okay with the EV SUV weight arms race on these vehicles that don’t have crash compatibility with anything else. 7,000lb SUV with a crash bar 5 feet in the air? Totally cool apparently. 1200lb “modified” with crash bar at the standardized car height ranges? No, that’s evil cus it looks too racecar like. The hypocrisy gets pretty frustrating.

This is so wrong. UK will register cars with no issues. Think Pagani Zonda, Valkyrie, Countless kit cars, etc. Try that in Cali

The only truth about that is that the roads in CA are basically the worst quality of all, especially when you come from Europe or the UK. Americans have no clue how to build lasting quality things.

Ulrich, this guy lived in Ludwigsburg and went through the factory in Zuffenhausen in '64. I had no idea what was coming in the future! We lived in Pattonville, next to Ludwigsburg and my Mechanical Drawing Class got a tour through the Porsche factory one afternoon. Probably the most noteworthy four hours in a four year assignment to Germany. I think the guy guiding our tour got a kick out this kid that was nutz over Porsches and sports cars in general. He had 16 kids on his hands for an afternoon. The 356 was going out of production and the 901/902 was just beginning... and Dan Gurney's 904GTS was in for maintenance in the empty warehouse next to the 356 production line! There are a lot of memories back there!

That is a beautiful bespoke vehicle. I do wish they added under the primary cockpit area a flat piece of metal that followed similar lines of the humped wheel wells.

The Half 11 looks like something a RU-vidr would come up with. I was surprised to learn that it was the brainchild of professional car designers, but they are young. The way it bounces on the road makes me think the suspension isn’t quite dialed in. The design looks incomplete and Can Am is the last thing I would compare it to visually. Mechanically, it comes off as raw and dangerous. I suspect that something as humble as a modern Corvette in stock trim would beat it around a track. Also, I LOVE IT. I look forward to seeing these guys grow and succeed.

I love the aesthetic of this car but as an ex racer and engineer it hard to get over the rear wing being mounted so low. I get this is about form over function, but the reason race cars look cool is because form has been driven by function. I’d mount that wing just four or five inches higher so it looks less like an aerodynamic mistake, or I’d have a camm tail instead (which would be more period appropriate). I’m not saying these guys should change it, just what would do differently. These guys are artists and that’s how their work should be regarded, so expecting changes to what they produce is akin to pushing Tracy Emin to make her bed.

I believe you think of the RUF CTR Clubsport. Fantastic Machine, but it doesn't have too much in common with the raw 60's CAN-AM style half11, apart from the 911 design spirit and being mid-engined, maybe. 👍Still, they're both beautiful in their own way.

Hey guys you could contact Jenson Button and Ant Anstead from Radford Motors , the creation the 4 of you could create could provide the havoc the car community needs to have to stimulate the youth of today to follow in your footsteps . If everyone goes electric what happens to the past , are we destined to only see the internal combustion engine in museums and not powering the vehicles we all love to drive , hear and experience first hand . The Half11 is my fantasy car except would have put a 930 race engine being a Porsche freak lol .

You can see that build quality is pretty dodgy. Look at the uneven panel gapping between the windscreen and the bonnet. Any real close up footage would ruin the illusion of it.

Don't waste your time trying to be a car designer, go learn to play baseball, or football if you're in Europe, those are more realistic jobs. Seriously, if you don't have an in of some sort or lots of money to burn and don't care about actually getting a job because you can just start a business that doesn't need to make you a living while you reside in one of the most relatively expensive places in the world don't bother, take up real gambling, it will be more likely to pay off.
