Halfling 5e Race Guide: www.skullsplit...
When most new players think about halflings, oftentimes the first image that comes up are hobbits from J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" & "The Lord of the Rings." While there are definitely many common traits borrowed from this source material, to assume the halfling 5e race are just like hobbits is to diminish everything this race brings to the table. While they are often overlooked by many players, that is an unfortunate mistake. This small race might be short in stature but they have a wide array of interesting traits that can help to create some really remarkable characters, not to mention mechanics that can be used to create some truly epic and interesting characters.

I love that idea of the Mr Magoo character that sounds like a lot of fun to play. I'll have to keep that in mind the next time I make up a wizard character.

As someone how is afflicted by the "Will Wheaton" syndrome, I really liked your bit about the lucky adventurer.

Keeban Thistletop. Lightfoot Halfling Arcane Trickster. I play him very similar to Tasslehoff Burrfoot of Dragonlance fame. He is curious, inquisitive, cheerful, creative, brave, and feels his emotions particularly strong. He makes friends with everybody and gets creative with his spells. Milo Thistletop, his ranger cousin, was once killed while trying to ride an annoyed gold dragon. Two stories. While exploring a cavern complex, our party encountered a group of cultists. As the battle drew to a close, Keeban cast Prestidigitation to create an elastic strap attached at each end to each of the horns on our tiefling barbarian’s head. Using Mage Hand, he launched a potion of Paralysis at the cultist leader. Thanks to the Lucky racial trait, the rerolled hit paralyzed the cultist. I call this particular combination of spells my “Devil’s Slingshot spell”. Our tiefling Barbarian was not amused. As our party explored a wizard’s tower, the group was confused in a room full of elementals. Keeban wandered off, under an Invisibility spell, and came to a room where a fire demon was trapped. Keeban befriended the fire demon and convinced the fire demon to help his party battle the elementals. Enroute, the fire demon kicked Keeban off a bridge in a magical corridor and rushed in to join the elementals in fighting against Keeban’s party. Keeban found himself in a closet further back down the corridor, and during the 3 rounds it took for him to return to his party, he chugged an unknown green potion that turned him into a young green dragon. As a young green dragon, Keeban joined the fight with his compatriots. In the next session, our party will be fighting Tiamat. This will be interesting. I would be curious to create a halfling character, using your “luckiest halfling” idea.

" Tasslehoff Burrfoot"....Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time...a long time...

@@SkullSplitter Tasslehoff Burrfoot was my favorite character. I was so disappointed when Aron Eisenburg (Nog, ST:DS9) passed away. I had really hoped that he would eventually sign a movie contract with Tracey Hickman to play Tas in a live-action Dragonlance movie.

I am GM and I am not sure how to feel about the Halfling Lucky racial ability. It is because that is a constant for the PC, but I feel bad because other players and races have their racial abilities usually be 1 per long rest. While the Halfling doesn't have that for their Lucky ability. This eats at me because it would mean that statistically, a Halfling character would not be failing or experiencing some of the subtle funny moments. (I do not intend to do the thing where the GM thinks of something super ridiculous to justify the Nat 1. But I think that level of failure could lead to more memorable moments for that player. It is like when Han Solo did his weapons malfunction routine, or when Sherlock Holmes failed to intimidate a big guy with a small hammer while the big guy had a sledgehammer. I feel like those little moments will go away). I have thought about making the Lucky racial ability be something that could be used once per long rest. But I am worried about it being seen as a cruel rebalance.
