Hit The Deck (1955) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #HitTheDeck
Hollywood musicals have always known what to do with sailors on leave: give ’em some pretty girls and some great songs and watch the fans line up to enlist! Hit the Deck hits all the right notes as three sailors (Tony Martin, Vic Damone, Russ Tamblyn) and three cuties (Jane Powell, Debbie Reynolds, Ann Miller) flirt, squabble, run afoul of shore patrol and of course, fall in love to a hit parade of Vincent Youmans tunes.
Directed By Roy Rowland
Starring Jane Powell, Tony Martin, Debbie Reynolds

and yet, it wasn't really a hit. looked tired around the edges, this kind of MGM musical. Jane Powell's last musical at MGM. they had better grosses with the more serious, reality-based Love Me or Leave Me, Interrupted Melody, and I'll Cry Tomorrow that same year. i was as sad as everybody else that Hit the Deck signaled the end of that kind of fluffy musical. tastes were changing. no question about it. good while it lasted, but...

@@richardlee8495 Regarding Hit the Deck: According to MGM's records the film's initial box office receipts were $1,989,000 in the United States and Canada and $1,456,000 elsewhere, resulting in a gross profit of $1,145,000 according to a production budget of approximately $2,300,000. Regarding Interrupted Melody: According to MGM records, the film made $1,801,000 in the US and Canada, and $2,227,000 overseas, resulting in a profit of $101,000.

@@emerybayblues well, good. but as an aficionado of MGM musicals from the first one i saw (Broadway Rhythm) i would say, sadly, that they were not liked that much anymore at that point. Deep in My Heart would have been better if anybody but Jose Ferrer had directed it, and starred in it. even George Murphy might have been better. directed by George Sidney, or Mervyn LeRoy. Vincente Minnelli would have declined. Wisely.

@@richardlee8495 Were tastes really changing? It appears that the general public began sitting at home in front of their new TV instead of going out to the movies (thus reducing box office receipts) as often and watching TV variety shows that pretty much had the same type of song and dance numbers that MGM musicals had but on a much more inferior level. People like Ann Miller and Vera Ellen still danced on TV variety shows after the movie musicals were over. During the 1960's the general public was saturated with TV variety shows featuring tap dancing, singing and comedy..the same type of thing MGM used to produce in the movies. ..but people watched this at home rather than at the movie theatre. Also, Paramount's film musical White Christmas was the highest grossing film of 1954 which was a sign that the general public still loved this type of entertainment at the movies. The first time I saw White Christmas was on TV in 1964 and I loved it and wanted to see more movies like it!!

Kerry B No. A movie like this; like the great old musicals wouldn’t make enough profit to suit the studios. These are from another era. Writers, composers, performers were all of another type. Remember, the best musical in years,THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, was panned in reviews. As a result box office was pathetically low. It was described as a “total flop”. Then people started listening to the soundtrack. They went to see the movie for themselves and it was an international hit. The reviewers had so little respect for the musical numbers they ignored them. I bought the soundtrack before the movie was released, I wanted to know the songs. So before I saw it I knew it was amazing. If there would be a few more open minds in Hollywood maybe we could get something like that again.

Agree totally. Her career was bedeviled by studio politics and her private ups and downs, plus a certain willingness to be pushed around. Nor was she a creative self-starter. For all that, if she had had a sponsor willing to give her the right build-up, she might have got the billing and vehicles to encourage her to broaden her range. As it was, Harry Cohn at Columbia was preoccupied with Rita Hayworth and Mayer at MGM favoured Vera-Ellen, Jane Powell and Kathryn Grayson after he lost face by Ann's rejection of his marriage proposal. At least Ann lasted far longer than her rivals, and became the spokeswoman-survivor of that gilded generation of hooferettes.

Hallelujah! What a better way to start an all-out glistening-and-heartening day than mulling and reveling in one of the most romp-enhancing, heart-entrancing,and pomp-evincing musical segments ever exquisitely-featured on the silver screen. This grand aboard-the-battleship finale number in the 1955 MGM big-budget razzle-dazzle crowd-pleaser / spirit-raiser "Hit the Deck" has doubtless trotted out an old-fashioned but perennially eye-popping and jaw-dropping musical extravaganza that is being fabulously-and-sedulously tuned-up with Mr Roy Rowland's buttered-up and uncluttered scene-styling; Mr Hermes Pan's gaily-staged and gilt-edged step-design; Mr George Folsey's gaudily-and-steadily widescreen camerawork; Mr Vincent Youmans / Mr Leo Robin and Mr Clifford Grey's deeply appealing-and-propelling song-piece; Mr Cedric Gibbons and Mr Paul Groesse / Mr Fred MacLean and Mr Edwin B Willis' quite gushy-and-plushy setting-look; Ms Helen Rose's utterly impressive-and-exclusive costume-designing ( such as the fitly-pleated gold skirt spiffed up with the cerulean petticoat that distinctively makes Ms Ann Miller look all the more lovelier-and-livelier than ever ); and needless to say the well coordinated-and-personated musical staging by MGM's most brilliant blue-chip superstars of the olden days together with a fine troupe of hoofing clean-cut and nice-looking navy chorus. Indeed there's no better way to adulate its charismatic grandeur and to emulate its cinematic stature than right now. This particular braced-up segment - showcasing the smokin' hot Ms Ann Miller's thrilling-twirling and signature rapid-fire tap-dancing with an extreme ardor and splendor in front of a company of gallant-and-nonchalant swabs - is straight out standout. Plus Ms Kay Armen's high-powered voice and well-registered screen-presence has added more charm and gusto to this exuberant finale number. This MGM's work of art has truly succeeded to bring a glimpse of an awesome-and-winsome yesteryear to all the classic musical-movie lovers. It's a sort of rekindling-or-dwelling upon the glories and pleasant memories of the past once again. All in all it's our pride and joy / a rare find that needs to be highly regarded and safeguarded.

Amphetamine was sold over the counter back then. They all did it. Watch a movie called "All That Jazz". Think of all the famous people that died from drug OD. Part of the problem is that without amphetamine they have no confidence to perform. Once they take enough they have to take something else to be able to sleep. The dancers had a lot of competition and would take anything to give then an edge.

Ann Miller always acknowledged inspiration from Eleanor Powell, but you cannot count how much she 'borrowed' here. Drilling a squad ('Rosalie'), throwing the hat off ('All Ashore'), advancing into a big CU (rare in the early days of widescreen), the big battleship guns out of 'Born to Dance'... I hope Ellie got royalties. The number is a slick melange of cliches, surprisingly so for Hermes Pan. It was one of MGM's and Pasternak's last efforts in the genre and betrays terminal fatigue. The script warmed up old Youman tunes and a Broadway property, 'Shore Leave', adapted for the second time by Dorothy Fields's brother Herbert; it had already furnished an early talkie for Jack Oakie, now lost. Directed by Roy Rowland, a studio hack whose uncle by marriage was one Louis B Mayer but who wound up shooting spaghetti westerns in Italy. Miller's career was dogged by shameful undervaluation. It did not let up for this, her final appearance in a big musical: she was only billed seventh. As a singer and hoofer, she knocked spots off Jane Powell and Debbie Reynolds, but she was too familiar after so long in programmers and Bs. Where would the Hollywood musical have been without chorus boys dressed as matelots, from Cagney and Shanghai Lil onwards? A definite whiff of 'Don't ask, don't tell' about some of these lads.
@jackanthony976
@jackanthony976 4 года назад
I think Ann also was too intent on being glamorous all the time to evolve into an actress after the musicals were over at MGM. For example, her last film at MGM *The Great American Pastime) was not a musical, but a black and white comedy in which she plays the mother of an 8 year old boy. In her book, she complained bitterly about having been "reduced" to playing a mother. However, she should have welcomed the opportunity with open arms and seen the writing on the wall..that she should have embraced new characters in order to prolong her film career.
@esmeephillips5888
@esmeephillips5888 4 года назад
@@jackanthony976 LOL. That sounds like Joan Crawford when she got the script of 'Mildred Pierce'- 'I couldn't possibly play the mother of a teenage girl.' She was 40 (probably) and it brought her an Oscar. Of the Metro greats, Esther Williams had a creditable stab at a straight part ('The Unguarded Moment') and Cyd was pretty good in 'Party Girl', as was Leslie Caron in 'The L-Shaped Room'; but on the whole hoofers better keep hoofing, and Ann did not wear out for a long time.
@jackanthony976
@jackanthony976 4 года назад
@@esmeephillips5888I read that Nicolas Ray did not want Cyd Charisse for "Party Girl" because she was "too glamorous" and was primarily a dancer in his eyes. Mr. Ray did not really consider Charisse an actress. However Mr. Ray was stuck with her because Cyd Charisse was an MGM contract player and MGM had the final say on who was cast. Nicolas did not get on well with Cyd Charisse because he felt she was more interested in wearing glamorous dresses for her scenes than in any character development. According to Nicolas Ray, Cyd Charisse treated Party Girl like she would any of the numerous dancing musicals she had done at MGM. After awhile, Nicolas Ray was told by executives not to speak to Miss Charisse at all even while directing her scenes. (How that is possible I don't know) Next MGM told Alfred Hitchcock to use Cyd Charisse for the MGM film "North by Northwest." However, Hitchcock did not want Charisse for the same reason Nicolas Ray did not want her...but this time Hitchcock prevailed and Eva Marie Saint got the part. Needless to say this was the end of the road for dancer Cyd Charisse as far as films were concerned and her movie career became practically non-existent after Hitchcock rejected her. MGM really had no use for Charisse after this as MGM musicals had become a thing of the past by 1959. And since producers were not interested in Charisse for any dramatic roles MGM cancelled her contract. In 1961 it was only through Marilyn Monroe's recommendation that Charisse did get a part in a major film co starring with Marilyn Monroe, but as you know, Monroe died half way through the filming of the movie titled "Something's Got To Give." You probably know all this inside information already as you are obviously a film buff like myself but let's say I am putting this information out there for people who may not know this.

@@jackanthony976 really weird, as Ray directed Cyd to her best dramatic performance. Cyd herself said he was a fabulous director, and agreed that this was her best straight dramtic performance. She was however, royally pissed off that MGM would not let Ray direct her dramatically in the dancing scenes.

Is that CinemaScope or what? With faves Tony Martin, Jane Powell, Debbie Reynolds, Russ Tamblyn, Walter Pidgeon and more! It's no hype to say that Ann Miller tap-danced as well as did Eleanor Powell before her.

Ann Miller. This happened before "Easter Parade." It was painful for her to do that film, as she was still recovering and had to be taped into her dresses.

Hit the Deck was such a wonderful filmed MGM musical with great performances, music and production values. I could never understand why it attracted such sniffy and demeaning reviews on release and over the years..

Are those tap shoes or were they heels she was tapping in and they recorded the tap shoes in pre/post?

@Runner Girl Whoa! Thanks for that! That's neat! It really brings out a cool effect and probably looks/sounds better than if she tried to do it altogether in one take (although, the technology wasn't available back then).

@Runner Girl Oh I AGREE! Lately the CG has been puke-worthy. Like in the latest Wonderwoman trailer. You don't get to see women move anymore like how we did in these older dance-theater-musical productions. :/

Everything about that scene is great, but I think if they would have fired the big guns at the end it would have been better. I understand they couldn't use real guns there and fake guns firing would have cost a fortune, but in my mind it would have made it near perfect.

Ann Miller didnt ever seem to change her makeup colours , did anyone notice that ? her eye makeup was always blue and her lips red .

rubberdc back then all the actresses wore red lipstick not like today when people are wearing black and other harsh color lip sticks.. As for the blue Eyeshadow? I tend to believe that Ann Miller went to The Agnes Moorhead/Endora from “Bewitched” school of eye makeup! lol
