Unless you see an actual instrument, all sounds are done by mouth. They do do some layering to have a more full sound. They also do character voices so what you hear is them doing that voice. They are phenomenal

They do put effects on in post sometimes.

Every single song they've done from The Nightmare Before Christmas is amazing, they've got Kidnap the Sandy Claws and What's This, as well as Geoff recently doing Jack's Lament

Kidnap the sandy claws is one of my favourites because of the F#2 subharmonic lol

In “This Is Halloween” we don’t see Layne’s beatboxing as much because the added nose made it hard to move his mouth well. They always record first, audio mix & then send for final mix. They are singing while doing the video, but they are not recording the audio then.

Forgot to add - video day was especially long on this song because of all the ‘make-up breaks’. I think I remember it as 7am to 11pm? That’s a 16hour day!

Geoff's voice (as well as the rest of Voiceplay) in this song (Oogie Boogie) is unique to it, I don't think you can compare it to any other songs. They're all really in character. It's so good! And in This Is Halloween, which was the first full video I watched by VP. Hot vampire + funny premise + amazing run at the end = me seeking out more of their stuff, and shortly thereafter, I was a full-fledged Voiceplaya and was running happily down the rabbit hole!

Taking handsome Geoff and turning him.. ooh la la. This is the vampire of romance dreams. I do wonder if he re did this vampire look for Halloween costume. That vampire does not inspire fear. 😉 So much great music from VoicePlay and Geoff. And repeat listening just gives more time to hear/see the subtleties that are overwhelmed when listening to the whole the first time through.

Eli is a professional character voice actor. He did the voice of Santa Claus and a minion in oogie Boogie. I do not know if they had to multi-track some of the recordings for videos here. This was all them and all acapella.

Just a little sidenote: "Acapella" doesn't necessarily mean "no editing/filters/effects" in post production. That would be a "live" recording. What defines acapella is "no use of instruments, synthesizers or computers to produce the sounds". Only Voice & body (snapping, clapping, stomping, etc) are allowed for creating the sounds. VP (and all other acapella groups, too) use filters like reverb, compressors etc. as well as mixing (cutting frequencies, adapting volumes etc.) and even add multiple layers of some vocals and vocal percussion in post production. Especially for their music videos, they aim for the "perfect audio". That said, you will definitely hear differences when acapella groups perform a song 'live', because there might be some parts or layers missing compared to the recordings, but everything you hear is made by themselves without instruments. Happy Halloween and greetings from Germany! 🎃😃

They always sound amazing! And they still keep getting better and better! There is some post-production in their studio video, but their live shows are equally awesome! The kid is Layne's nephew. Happy Halloween! 🎃

They do sometimes layer their voices (for example Geoff can be heard in the bass line and in a solo at once) and this is not live, there is post production done. But everything is done with their voices. They are great voice actors- there’s no voice switching😊.

You can listen to This Is Halloween dozens of times and still hear something new every time you listen. I just heard something brand new today on another channel - and I've heard this song at least several dozen times! Oogie Boogie's Song was my introduction to both VoicePlay and Geoff, so it holds a special place in my heart - but I think musically, This Is Halloween is what I'd use to introduce someone new to VoicePlay!

So... The last note in "Oogie Boogie Song", the "subterranean", is a subharmonic E1. Geoff reached a B0 in two different videos: "Halo theme" (twice) and "Valhalla calling" (three times). And yes, those high notes are all Geoff. There's a partial LIVE video of Oogie Boogie where you can appreciate how it sounds live, although it's recorded by someone in the audience with a cellphone, so the quality isn't the best, but... 🙂 "This is Halloween" is one of their most enjoyable videos, IMHO. I love it, even if I'm not into Halloween and I never seen the movie. 🙂 See you next time!

I love how people react to the C#2 in the end of the first verse. My mans can go 2 octaves lower. Yes, I meant two. He goes one octave lower in the Skyrim theme cover, to C#1, which is already pretty insane, but his lowest recorded fry note that actually sounded like a note was a C#0, which doesn't even exist on a double bass or on a grand piano. And he can go higher than the B4, almost an octave higher. He hit an A5 and said he didn't want to go further so as not to strain his voice too much. Holy crap that guy

The characters they turn into are from the movie: Nightmare Before Christmas. That is why the characters are not completely realistic, they are based on the characters from the stop motion animation. The transformations are simply amazing. The Arrangements truly make their covers works of art. The bit of fun they have is extra layers to enhance the experience. Love the works they've done. Thanks for reacting to both of these back to back.

As an explaination, Halloween has Trick or Treat. Many years ago, the kids would play tricks on people. Best trick was hitting the victim with a cloth sack of flour. As years went by, this changed into the kid demanding a treat, or payment to buy the way out of the trick. As a Viking, you might understand Tribute? Candy evolved to be the treat of choice. In this video, the little Jack demanded the Tribute. They didn't pay up, so they get the trick. Lessons learned here? Don't run out of candy. Don't take goodies from strangers. Or, he will Roofie you all!

It's the same here in Norway, but then there's like... maybe 10% of the population or something, if even that many, who insist on doing so every year anyway, and then the rest of us are just expected to have candy ready to hand out to strangers' kids who come knocking after all, despite not having any kind of relationship to the celebration other than seeing the grocery stores flooded with halloween candy every October... Really annoying, to be honest. Like having other people pushing their beliefs on you, but then it's through kids asking for candy so you're not allowed to get upset either you just look like a nasty grump

All sounds are produced without instruments but there are electronic effects and filters. The origin of the sounds is the human voice and mouth making it acapella. All of the percussion you hear is sounds made by a human without any instrument.
