Personally I would love to hear more about making prosthetics vs just applying them and what the benefits are of each if one might want to pursue a career in sfx?

from this video I've discovered that pre-made prosthetics usually come in white tones... similar to nude ballet clothes or nude band-aids... If someone had a darker skin tone it would take them much longer to paint a realistic skin tone that matched theirs... so my question is do any of these companies make prosthetics that are pre-made as dark skin tones?

That's a good point! Foam can be tinted but usually just comes in it's default colour then people put reds, then flesh tones over the top, so is around the same amount of work for light or dark skin tones. . Proren you can have them colour it in a darker skin tone, for the silicone pieces. Brian Sipe's are more the red undertones, to simulate blood under the skin, and need some alcohol colours over the top to get them to match lighter or darker skin tones, but obviously lighter is gonna be a bit easier. Nimbas and Tinsley just come in default Caucasian skin tone, as far as I'm aware.

Freakmo I'm having my head cast done and wondering if you know where to get foam latex in Canada or not too much expensive to ship in Canada 🇨🇦. I use a face cast usually but as a professional MUA, I got someone to do my head cast and I want to do more prosthetics and appliances. Would you get foam latex or platsil or both? Now I have latex, Gelatin in liquid form (Ben bye) and the the one you make yourself and 3rd degree. I bought few tinsley transfer but didn't use it on clients because of the reasons you named. I emailed you on your gmail account. 😊

Freakmo honestly wouldn't care if you were sponsored for any of your videos, they are extremely informative and you know more than a fair amount about everything you show us so I'd trust your judgment even if it was sponsored. Glad your hard work is paying off and that companies are sending you these awesome products!

You're good and there is no shame in doing a sponsored video :). Even when it is sponsored, you can set up an arrangement with the company that makes it clear that your review of the product will be "honest". If the product is actually good, then the company should have nothing to fear! Congratulations on all the free materials from various companies! That's so cool! No way! :D A give a way! Cool! :D I look forward to that possibility!

Thank you! I feel the same way, I straight up don't want to do Halloween makeup anymore because I feel nervous quoting people. I want them to be comfortable and have a high quality prosthetic if they're going to pay for a professional to do it, I don't see the point in paying for a professional makeup artist to do your makeup if they're just gonna use liquid latex. But unfortunately that means $$, eep.

Niiiice! Yeah I haven't had much experience with foam latex either, it definitely has a place for when people need larger looks and need a light weight material, but all of the things I've worked on so far we haven't used it. I don't really work on things with big creature suits, though... maybe one day!

I say it because it is true :). The amount of knowledge you have regarding prosthetics really shows in all of your videos, but especially this one! I enjoy getting the chance to pick your brain in these comments. Just finished watching and left a beefy comment, but imma rewatch later after running some silicone relief molds and take notes! What are The advantages of having a jagged line of flashing? I just made some relief molds and want to know how to make my next mold better! :D

Haha :D I feel like we would get along too ^.^ GAH! lol I totally was basing my process for flashing and relief mold making off of your old video and did the straight line flashing generally around the sculpt XD! Lol, but I haven't had any issues! I have been running mine in silicone. But, for my next one, I will be sure to try the jagged flashing much closer to the sculpt and a lot more carefully shaped. Then I shall compare the differences! So, when making the jagged flashing edges, do you still take a rounded tool and carve off some of it like you did when you had a straight line flashing? (I believe you said so the relief mold is easier to remove because there isn't a undercut?)

Yep! I've not started doing it yet either, in general I've tried to get my flashing closer but I haven't done the fully curvy zig zag stuff yet, but after this I will!

Hahah yeah there is some really dodgy looking liquid latex ones out there. I think Nimba is UK based so should be able to ship to Spain pretty easily :) I got all my stuff imported from the USA and UK, being in Australia I rely on international shipping for nearly everything D:

Hey, yeah I'll add it to my list! I usually have to take it apart, soak each bit (needle, nozzle,) in IPA (or acetone if I was using baldiez) and use something like a pipe cleaner through it all to get out gunk (though Tim Gore says using anything with metal to clean out the air brush is air brush abuse :P ) then spray IPA through it and make sure it's coming out okay.

Freakmo cool thank you. I have one question. how do I avoid wrinkles in the thin blending cap plastic area. I went crazy and tried everything to fix it. please help me :D

I had that problem for so long too! Drove me nuts! So what that is, is gluing down too much cap plastic. If you put glue on it, it's very hard to then blend all of it away and it leaves a bit of the layer on top of the skin which wrinkles different and shines differently from the skin. So what I do now, is I only glue about 1 - 2 mms of the cap plastic down, just the tiniest bit, then blend away the rest of it easily because it's not glued down. Then I will also take a red stipple sponge and some prosaide cream (so a bit thicker than regular prosaide but not as thick as bondo), and stipple that all around the edges. This both helps to seal them down and also creates more of a texture over it (through the stipple sponge) to disguise that as being cap plastic, but use just a little cause it can have it's own shine or weird texture. Then to finsih I use a mattifying sealer over it to take away any shine from the prosaide, the cap plastic, or the silicone. I think most places call it prosaide cream, I'm not sure why I can't stop saying creamy prosaide :P this is where I got mine from: www.frendsbeauty.com/pros-aide-cream-adhesive.html It's such a helpful product, I pretty much use this stuff with every makeup that I do now to secure down the edges and make them look more blended in.

Yeah so most people can't paint straight onto foam latex with like.. water or alcohol paints, most people use a PAX paint, which is acrylic paint (usually liquitex), and usually with their matte medium, or sometimes cosmetic pigments, mixed in with prosaide adhesive (no tac prosaide works better for a non sticky finish). This is both quite opaque (which you need on an opaque prosthetic) and helps to seal the surface. So for that I was planning on using some PAX paints I bought from Thomas Surprenant, they're really lovely paints. Then you can paint on top of those with skin illustrator to give it more depth. Witch hazel is something a lot of people use in a skin care routine for 'toning' it comes in both alcohol and alcohol free, and people use it this way because it's an astringent (causing the contraction of skin cells and other body tissues, makes skin look less red, less oily) it's made by boiling the bark and leaves of the witch hazel. I'm not sure what it is about it that makes the gelatine melt, but if you have a very thin edge of gelatine then witch hazel can melt it down, in the same way that acetone melts cap plastic edges. Warming up the witch hazel also helps, as heat will also make the gelatine melt. Prosthetic grade gelatine uses 300 bloom gelatine, which you can't buy in the grocery store, you need to order it specially. The grocery store stuff is weaker. Yeah :P a wall of faces, when people who are not expecting it come to my house (like my brother's friends) I often forget it's there then have some explaining to do, that I'm not an actual serial killer. Yeah, so far I've tried Stuart Bray's moulds which are more geared towards silicone, but you can also use gelatine or prosaide in it (I've done both!), and then PTM moulds which are geared towards prosaide transfers (have a special freezer activated release in them, which is cool af, I can't wait to show it in a video!!)

No worries! Yeah I prefer pax as the initial stuff, then go back in with alcohols after! Re: the moulds, yeah exactly! It's interesting because the up front cost of buying the moulds + the materials to fill it will be so much more than buying a prosthetic, but then the individual cost of running each prosthetic will be so much less, per piece, than buying a pre made one, if that makes sense. If you're gonna use it a bunch, for cons, parties, zombie walks, etc, then moulds are great! But if you just want to do it once, don't already own materials to fill moulds, then buying a pre-made piece is much easier and cheaper.

:D That totally makes sense! Since I will be using them a lot, re running them, testing out different casting materials, mixing different mixtures of pigments in silicone, testing different paints, and then practicing applying them (when I said I was learning prosthetics I meant I was DIGGING DEEP haha), the remade mold purchase is totally worth it to me! Also, I am about to make a full head bust cast of myself to start sculpting an Urgal, but that large of a mold sucks to fill with plaster! It's so heavy and practically useless, so we want to run the mold of my bust in some sort of durable detailed plastic. Do you have any product recommendations? :)

I haven't! I bought some water melon to try once and it arrived from the UK with 80% of it hardened and a bit of water on top, it was super weird, I don't know what happened, ended up getting a refund.

Yeah, it surprised me too! We managed to get a nice application (did a test with powdah), but it take a bit of effort to not stick to everything and roll out the edges.

scannaunderscore1 the products are expensive because they're mostly film/production grade prosthetics that make very realistic wounds and also makes creating the effect a somewhat easy task for the makeup artist (as in, not having to build it up from scratch on the model, the blending and colouring is still hard work!)
