Halloweentown is the ULTIMATE Halloween Movie! 

My hometown was where the first Halloweentown was filmed (and some scenes of Twilight as well). They have embraced the nostalgia for the film and every year, they hold a Halloweentown celebration, with lighting the giant pumpkin (it was originally the prop from the movie, but it was replaced with a metal one eventually). They invite the actors for meets and greets, and dress up the town a little. Not to the same level as the actual movie, but maybe someday! They also have Benny's cab too. Its really fun to see the love of this movie still thrive so many years later. It was fun when I moved there as a kid and saw all the locations in one of my favorite D-Coms in the flesh. Saw a bunch of movies in that theater too.

Y'know, I bet a darker take on this movie would have implied Kalabar- sorry, Chocolatebar- had something to do with Papa Cromwell's absence. If it actually did, I musta missed it.

While I love Halloweentown, I personally find its sequel, Halloweentown 2, to be the best of the series. I feel like that one decided to kick things up, get a little darker and increase the stakes. The production on it looks really good for a TV movie, like the creature costumes are better than the first (then again it doesn't have as many creatures to show off til act 3, so they could afford to give them the time and money to look good and spooky). Plus, it's the movie that introduced Kimberly J. Brown to her future husband, which is a huge plus

Halloweentown was the definition of "Remember when Disney Channel Original Movies weren't mostly dumb musicals?". Sure, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows back then for DCOMs... but Halloweentown was that one special movie you could put on during Halloween and not cringe through it.

In retrospect, the mom was kinda toxic with literally trying to erase her children's heritage and steal it from them by holding out until her kids lost their chance at magic/being able to fully embrace their heritage forever

Hades IS the name of the god, but eventually his name did become synonymous with the general Greek underworld. Tartarus is actually similar in that way, being the name of a primordial diety AND the deepest abyss where the Olympian gods put their enemies, like most of the Titans, and people who they wanted to severely punish, like Tantalus and Sisyphus.

Seeing this movie at my grandmother's house only helped to feed my childhood Halloween obsession. I even wrote a story set in Halloweentown when I was 9 for a school writing project!

25:35 -- Allison was correct. "Hades" has also been used to refer to his realm (the underworld) on the whole. Tartarus is only one part of it (the worst part, where the most notorious of sinners would go to receive their punishment, and where the Titans were sent after the Titanomachy). Most humans would be sent to the Asphodel Meadows (unless they were heros or said notorious sinners).

I loved Halloweentown 1 and 2 as a kid! I'm not really sure why but I remember liking 2 better than 1. I hope you guys do videos on the sequels too

I remember when I was a kid I had seen The Nightmare Before Christmas and then watched this and was really confused about why Jack Skellington wasn't in this. From my perspective the production values really took a step down between the two.

I absolutely loved the Halloween Town movies as a kid! If I saw them on TV around this time of year, I had to drop everything and watch. Oh, and goodness!! Allison, those overalls are SO cute, and they look GREAT on you!

I remember, it’s either this movie or a movie with a similar plot that burned a scene in my mind. At one point a character in the real world (at some kind of amusement park) is shown becoming one with their mask and the movie plays it like the person is suffocating. Terrifying to child me.

Halloween my favorite time of the year going out trick-or-treating with my girlfriend and friends dressed as a union civil war soldier.

I think the cliche Chosen One plot hurt Return to Halloweentown as a movie as much as the Marnie recast hurt it emotionally

I’m so happy you gave this a positive review. Yeah, I mean, sure, some of the costumes and set designs might not be high quality, but it's a Disney Channel movie from the 2000s. It's not gonna have the same production values as say, The Last of Us. I'm really glad you kept that perspective, unlike some other reviewers. Even Phelan, who doesn't see it through the same rose-tinted glasses, admits to enjoying it for what it is. This is why you guys are my favorite reviewers.

Really like the back to back reviews you guys are putting out on nostalgic horror movies for all ages. Especially this time capsule of old school Disney Channel Original Movies that may or may not have inspired The Owl House.

I love this movie. The second one is pretty good, too. Plus, the actress who played Gwen was also in the original TMNT movies as April O’Neil.

This movie was a huge part of my childhood. Also I’ll never forget that someone supposedly named their cat after the sequels title. Like the cat was literally named Halloween Town Two Kalabars Revenge.

My mom and brother grew up loving these films. I think I saw the 2nd and 3rd ones, but I was more jaded even though Halloween is my favorite holiday. Happy Halloween and Festival of Samhain to you, Phelous, and everyone who reads this (even after the fact).

I grew up near where they filmed this. They have a big gathering every year to celebrate the movie. I also grew up with it in general and I do have fond memories of it. I was and still am a HUGE FAN of Halloweentown. I had great memories of watching it every Halloween growing up and now it's a Traditional movie every year for The Spooky Season. Happy Halloween, Allison and Phelous thanks for the great review🎃🎃

Whoa! Not some SG1 references all of a sudden! I think I was at an age when this came out I would've thought watching any Disney Channel movie was too weenie. Shame. I probably would've loved it and have found nostalgia for it now like you.

Halloweentown High was the movie that was new when I was watching Disney Channel, so that’s the entry I have the most fondness for.

This is so good. My late daughter and i would watch this and hocus pocus. Everyone loves on hocus pocus but this film is even better for campy fun times imo 😂. Love this. However yes they explained the bus a lot more in the sequels. I love the things you brought up that i didnt even know having watched this probably 10+ times. 😅

They aren't necessarily ''must rewatch every October'' favorites like Hocus Pocus or The Nightmare Before Christmas, but I do have a lot of nostalgic fondness for the first 2 Halloweentown movies. Probably the only Disney Channel Original movies that I've ever genuinely loved.

Allison. Allison! I have a suggestion for next year! You and Phelous should watch "When Good Ghouls go Bad." It's about a town that doesn't celebrate Halloween because of a curse cast by a Tim Burton kid who burned to death, but more importantly it's got Christopher Lloyd as a zombie.

Before Halloweentown, my mom had a VCR recording of The Halloween That Almost Wasn't (1979) and that used to be my cheesy Halloween movie.

Tartarus is the term for the whole of the underworld/afterlife in Greek myth, Hades is the part of Tartarus where bad people go.

The original Halloweentown is classic and camp in the best way.

i always wondered if nightmare before christmas and Halloween town were in the same world. the part where jack skellington and the others are it's always night but the part where Aggie Cromwell and the others live it's always day. otherwise disney is just lazy in renaming a monster themed town twice xD

Love your channel! This movie was my childhood! It wasn’t really Halloween season until you watched this on Disney :) This was one of my favs, I remember my fam all sitting down to this, and the second one was still a fave, I loved Kalabar haha but marnie was who I always played pretend as lol

I live 5 minutes from where they filmed all the downtown scenes - they decorate it like they did in the movie in October.

I was too old (early 20s) for this movie when it came out and so don’t have the childhood nostalgia attached to it. I can certainly see how, had I been younger at the time, feeling that way about it though.

To correct Phelan, Hades also refers to the domain he rules, which is the underworld. Tartarus is an extension of that, and it originally was only meant to imprison the titans. Allison wins!

Something that feels like a plot hole of the franchise is after Kalabar’s Revenge it’s not something they revisit. Maybe they didn’t want to do the same villain again but Kal survived in Halloweentown 2 and never tries coming back to get Marnie and etc.

I just saw this a couple weeks ago. I didn't grow up with any Disney channel stuff (last year was the first year I saw Hocus Pocus too) and it's a fine kids movie I guess -- we had Disney channel, but it's just not a thing any of us ever watched; we were keen Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network heads growing up. My fiancé grew up on all these, so he loves them all. I got the appeal of why everybody loves them, it's just out of my age range of interest. I found bits to appreciate though, like the puppet work on the skeleton cabbie, and could hardly call it wasted time or anything.

the separate worlds is explored better in the second film. they barely mention it in the first film. but the portal is only open on halloween. they usually take the bus through but witches can just summon a door portal themselves. eventually the door portals can be summoned anytime which is monsters and witches are going to high school in the third one i think. been awhlie since i've seen the last 2 films.

The Mermaid one was also good... it had the seeds of a very good plot in there, even if it didn't fully follow through on some of those. The one where a boy turns into a merman after 13 years of living on land thinking he's an ordinary human. the only other one's I really remember off the top of my head were the Zena... Zeon... the space station girl & uh, Smart House? The one with the AI house. Oh, there was that one about Leprechauns... that was... a good example of how not to make... any of the things it was...
