@@kennethfrazee2540 I can't remember where I read it, but doesn't dual-wield cut damage output by 50%? I guess it's like exchanging power for 2x the firing rate
@HeavyWeapons057 if you're playing at a range yes but up close the plasma pistol and ar both bear it when combo with melee. The br was less reliable up close due to its smaller cone of accuracy.
I get it, though. In the vidocs leading up to Halo 3, the Bungie devs mentioned that they really wanted AR fights to come down to who used their grenades & melee best. They didn't want the AR to be the spray-and-pray bullet hose it was in CE (that's the SMG's role now), but rather something that fit better into Halo's golden triangle. (I _don't_ think they succeeded, and that the Halo 3 AR is probably the _worst_ iteration of that gun -- but I get what Bungie was going for.)
@@jorgekeys1337 tbh in my opinion I thought reach’s AR was the worst. I remember unloading a whole mag and it didn’t kill the guy. But to each his own on his favorite halo AR
@@jpatt85 not to mention the flinch mechanic is broken af, you shouldn’t be able to rapidly flinch someone across the map with your AR or BR and win in a gun fight against snipers
The AR in Reach is the MA37, an outdated model still used by the UNSC Army with terrible accuracy. It would eventually be replaced by the MA40 from Halo Infinite, but the army still used it.
I mean in theory the infinite design is newer, it just has design features reminiscent of the old Reach AR. Like, a couple of things were brought over because they actually were decent, while working on the parts of the AR that were flawed such as its accuracy.
@Morgan Null ok, I went to ChatGPT about this, asking where it came from: "one of the sound designers, C. Paul Johnson, using a combination of sounds he made with his mouth and other sound effects. In an interview with The Game Informer Show, Johnson explained that he created the sound by making a "pop" sound with his mouth and layering it with other sounds, including the sound of a compressor and a metal impact. The result was a unique, high-pitched sound that became one of the most recognizable sound effects in the game."
@Morgan Null It feels like a lot of the subsequent games lacked the same quality. I can still distinctly hear the sound of Hunters running around. It's a very distinct metal scraping noise that makes them sound more imposing.
I absolutely LOVED the og magnum. So powerful it made these towering monsters in a half ton of armor flinch when they shot it. Also I really liked the remote detonated explosives launcher in halo 4.
All of the Halo 1 guns had a unique feeling to them and all stood out in their own way. You can take literally any of them and it feels nice to use them.
Ill always remember when I first played Halo reach it made me miss the classical design that much more, so when we got it back in halo 4 it just gave me another reason to love that game.
Well you see, Infinite's AR is actually closer lore wise to the Reach AR, as opposed to the others. In lore, the CE AR is the MA5B, 3's is the MA5C. The Reach AR is actually supposed to be older, called the MA37, only used by the Army, and Infinite's is the MA40. Finally, the MA5D is Halo 4 and 5.
Yeah, what people think is just a series of errors in reality are detailed in game time updates of the UNSC weaponry in accordance to location and context. 😤 Many games just don't care these things. That's one of the many reasons why I love Halo.
@@danielefabbro822 I enjoy it as well. As the games progress, so does the UNSC's weaponry Unless you're the poor Army in Reach, that is And thank you. Good to see another Halo Lore guy on here. While a lot of people just know the weapons under names like "assault rifle", we know there's actually half a dozen different versions of that
@@Tbaggrrr Ah that sound design was soothing. I don't get the love for the Halo 4 design. It sounds like a generic real life assult riffle which was besides the point. It does sound far better than it did in Halo 3 though.
The AR ammo counter and overall design has got to be one of the most distinctive and easily recognizable features of the franchise after Chief’s helmet and the warthog.
I think when I played, you could have 600 rounds in reserve, but as the further you got in the campaign, the less amount of rounds you could carry in reserve, correct me if I'm wrong
@@KingCooper0755 There is a mission where you start with the AR and 600 bullets in reserve, but as you spend them, you cant get back to those, just the original limit in Reach
There’s actually a reason it doesn’t. So the MA37 which is the reach AR used by the UNSC army has a very impressive service history dating way before the covenant first made contact. The development of the MA5-B came a little later and was the standard issue for the UNSC marine corps. The MA5-C is what we see in halo 3 and has some improvements over the MA5-B and reduced the mag size due to spring pressure on the magazines making the more prone to jamming. But each variant variant has similar features and its own drawbacks. (Lore wise) which is pretty cool to actually see them out some thought in some of the minor changes of the weapon platform.
Dude I miss the 60 bullet mags. It felt very balanced when going against Elite shields. 32 is alright but gotta reload and dodge while Elite shields are still on.
I'm pretty sure with the damage boost exchanged for the smaller mag, you can drop a standard Elite's/Brute's shields before the 32-shot mag goes empty, as long as you're firing from close enough to make sure all the bullets hit (Higher-ranked enemies are a different story). I remember a lot of times in the campaign I just mag-dumped with the AR at close range, or controlled bursts at mid-range, and as soon as I saw the shield break, I swap to my precision secondary for a headshot, or dive in for a melee kill.
@@Lazarultosn legendary the AR is so damn good against the flood, just a few shots and you can take down most forms, except for the tank and spitter forms. Against brutes it takes a mag and a half to chew through a gold brutes armor, but a minor can die to a mag dump, and the higher up blue boy eats a mag and then a punch. Would not recommend against chieftains. Or hunters. Or jackal snipers. Or jackals in general unless close enough to consistently hit the hand or foot. It shreds grunts and drones tho. Even does surprising damage to the scarab core. Only issue is ammo and range, some maps have very few ARs, while others are flooded. And it's range is ok if tap fired but horrendous if at a longer distance than a decent poking stick and holding the trigger
Definitely agree that Halo 4’s AR is underrated, but from my experience Halo Infinite has the best feeling AR and it’s definitely the most viable. That’s just my opinion though
Man I Remember that Mission From Halo 1 and I use to replay it all the time. Especially the first minutes of the mission where you land on the beach with a bunch of marines. I would always try to Keep as much marines alive as possible before heading further into the island. Til the point where all survived and i would fight the whole squad after killing 2-3 non-aggressive npc soldiers 😅. Good Times. The New Halos are food but the Engine of the first two were Spectacular, never to forget, and fun playthroughs.
@@keanestewart4837 Infinite is farthest ahead in the timeline but the gun itself is still old. The AR in Infinite is the second oldest model after Reach, the order of oldest to newest being Reach, Infinite, CE, Three, and then both Four and Five which use the same base model.
@@skin_lizard yeah I don't understand 343s logic to make the MA40 the current issue rifle by the events of reach. It's like they ditched all the technological advancement of the MA5 models and went back to the pre-covenant war era AR design
@@Gameprojordanconsidering the UNSC was getting their butt kicked I would assume they fell back on old designs because they are easier, quicker, and cheaper to mass-produce

The CE AR was my absolute favorite in the whole damn series. I’d ditch the magnum for a shotgun and keep an AR on me at all times in CE and I loved every second of it
@@andrei3436 the thing was an absolute bullethose. I adored that fuckin thing. I could kill like, 8 or 9 grunts with a single mag. Really good for large groups of weaker enemies, plus a good old charge towards an elite while firing, and following up with a quick melee was always a great way to get them out of your way.
@@venerablebrothergoriate5844 not to forget how awesome it is to mow down flood hordes with it too! Man, whenever i faced them, the ar-shotgun combo was the dream
Halo 5 and Halo infinite had the best AR gameplay wise but my favorite design for the AR is definitely the AR in halo 3 I just wish it was better in gameplay though
@@0JayDoubleU ikr they tried to make the AR in infinite look like the AR from halo reach but personally I agree they should’ve really made the AR have a similar design to the one from halo 3 tbh
Halo Combat Evolved: MA5B, older MA5 model produced and used during the early years of the human-covenant war with lower accuracy and a large 60 round magazine. By 2552, it was mainly used by UNSC Navy personnel, as it's large magazine and poor accuracy made it ideal for fighting in the tight corridors onboard ships, and was therefore the most readily available assault rifle during the Pillar of Autumn's trip to the Halo ring. Halo 3 & Halo 3 ODST: MA5C, a more accurate replacement to the MA5B with a smaller magazine, heavier barrel and a more ergonomically designed handguard. It saw the most use amongst UNSC military personnel throughout the human-covenant war, being used from at least 2531 to 2552. Halo 4 & 5: MA5D, the most recent iteration of the MA series, produced after the conclusion of the human-covenant war. It holds many similarities to the MA5C. Halo Reach: MA37, an outdated predecessor to the MA40 and the MA5B. By 2552, it was still in use by the UNSC army, and was issued to the UNSC Army troopers stationed on planet Reach. Halo Infinite: MA40, the most recent version of the assault rifle to appear, is another older variant of the MA series, on the same lineage as the MA37. However, it has higher accuracy and a slightly larger magazine. Despite being an older design, by the 2560s newer models of the gun with updated features were being mass-produced for renewed military service, to be used in the UNSC's war with The Created.
The battle rifle will always be the preferred weapon for me. AR was so inaccurate in the first game. But still so much love. Glad we got to keep both in future games.
Not when you burst fire like the AI marines did. Short but rapid bursts of 3-6 rounds at a time made for a lot more hits on target. Literally drove my buddy insane taking him out at distance he considered outside the effective range of the Assault Rifle in Halo CE.
Halo 1 AR felt amazing. It along with the Plasma Rifle carried me through SLASO. If you burst fire it like the marine ai, you'll literally never miss and single shot.
The Reach look is the best, I'm so happy they brought it back for Infinite. Classic is cool, but the other one just looks so raw and more like a lethal killing machine in my opinion. I even bought the Nerf gun of it lol
What I love about the assault rifle was the 60 bullets that they had when I only had one magazine laugh I made sure I used each and every last bullet. You can either hold the trigger or tap the trigger.
The issue with the magnum is that in Halo CE it came with a scope introducing everyone to pistol sniping. It was much more controlled with ammo and more damaging per bullet than the assault rifle. That made the magnum favored over the assault rifle.
You summed up rings of power pretty good in your first words about it. It could have been… worse. I adored the hobbits and who I think is Gandalf, and the dwarven halls were a great set piece. Sauron was great in my opinion, and the elf guard guy was cool
I hated how in halo when you shoot the AR it sprayed everywhere in the whole screen, but when the infected shoot it, every single bullet flew straight to you.
Being able to one shot things with the magnum in halo 1 and 2 (and i think 3?) Was just too fucking good, of course it took some good aiming because body shots couldn't one shot unless you were fighting hunters
As tactical as you could make your Spartan look in Reach, I'm surprised they never let us customise our weapons with different Halo-esque attachments. Especially when you consider they were competing with Call of Duty for a long time as top FPS, and that was a huge selling point for that series.
the Halo 5 AR is actually my favorite, classic looking, but redone in a modern, highly detailed way. and the subtle green really reminds me of the Canadian military's standard issue weapon lol. and it was a pretty good gun it just got outshined by the BR and the magnum the whole game.
For the first game, you only start to use it again when you come across the flood so you can spray and pray with it as you’re running backwards! 😂 Shotgun and pistol were the go tos in that game
halo 1 ma5b sounded so great, and the armor piercing rounds were underrated. loved halo CE ma5b. no other halo assault rifles had that magical 60 round 7.62x51 mag and that beefy sound.
Assemble mod program. Load map. Find Assault rifle tabs. Give it the BR firing effect, set firing noise to shout, increase magazine size to 60, increase maximum ammo to 600. Finally, as it makes sense, set the bullet to cause headshot. Additionally you can increase the impact and detonation sounds as well from medium to shout :) Feels much better during gameplay. If you kill too much with it, just add more enemies.
@@Drakrylos doesn’t matter other than halo CE’s AR its the most inaccurate only has 32 rounds is outperformed in multiplayer worse than it is in other halo games and has to fight Promethians in the campaign. For these reasons it’s my least favorite AR out of all of them in the entire series.
@@ctnknight5624 Inaccurate? Sorry, that's wrong. CE has the most inaccurate AR, and in multiplayer the Halo 4 AR shredded. You're thinking about the Halo Reach AR, *that* one was dogshit.
The Reach and Infinite ARs are my favorite designs for the gun. I can't even use the classic skin we recently got because it just doesn't look right to me anymore.
I'm not big halo player but my most used weapons always have been magnum pistol, sniper, and the energy claw sword thingy. All of em slow with not much ammo and range for use is either far or close making them poor on mid range, but they all have high dmg and I personally do like to take em out from far much as I can and then get to close and personal.
The CE Magnum was a monster. No personal preference about it. One shotting Hunters and Jackels from moons away, taking down Banshees with ease. Simply a better choice.
My favorite gun in halo is that first assault rifle. Just laying into loads of enemies with 60 rounds non stop with that fast low pop and the counter quickly ticking down on top till 0😂
For me I like to believe that the assault rifle wasn't made or is intended to be used on covenant rather rebels. As we've seen waves of Marines armed with these things get wiped out by mere task force of mainly grunts and a handful of brutes
