Nah, they had them in Halo CE. You could find them in characters. They contain all the textures of the character, whether it be armor shaders or the reflection of their visor. It's just a reference cubemap node. That ship passes from one part of the environment to the other with various lighting changes. It makes sense to find it there. Also, the thing isn't even over the port where the beam particle spawns from.

You don't need a cube in the middle of a model to contain all the textures. I know this because I work with CE daily. Some people just had them in there for some reason. It actually doesn't make sense to keep the cube in there for CE since that would be yet another draw call which would screw with the original Xbox's speed. Sometimes people who work on models just make a box and attach their model to it, when you attach a model with materials to an untextured cube in 3dsmax it automatically covers the cube's sides with different materials. Nowhere did I imply this cube spawned the particle beams, in fact I implied it did not. It is not a reference node, I said the other things like "davincy eggs" are just placeholder models with placeholder textures as those objects have no other model and they need something to attach a node to. Also lighting would be pretty dull if it just used the cube for it, having read the Halo PC pixel shader source I know it does nothing like that. (the source is uncompiled in a leaked beta)

Could you explain it in simple words? XD I still don't get what are those cubes used for. I think the cube shown in this video contains the texture of the cruiser so that it's... easier to texture it? I don't know

It's just a cube, sometimes devs accidentally leave them in and then don't bother to take them out as that takes time. Other times it is to host a little marker that tells the game where to spawn stuff.

Alright, and what can you tell me about the ray stuff which triggers the landmines in Halo 3's map Sandtrap? Generalkidd always says that it contains "scripts". I think they're just regular cubes as you said
