A nearly 2-hour playthrough and commentary of Halo Reach, released with the Legendary Edition of the game. Features Martin O'Donnell, Steve Scott, Lee Wilson, and Marcus Lehto.
32:13 Fun fact. "...Too Quiet" is a continuation of the title card "It's Quiet..." from Halo 1 when you unlock the security door on The Silent Cartographer.
audio composer/heart and soul of Bungie. I wanna see the OG guys come back together 1 last time to see what they can make, idec if its halo. let the creative juices flow
@@evillemperor5447 so does ODST. ODST didn't have much "making of" stuff like Halo 1-3 did. I'd love to see one for the two remaining Bungie halos, just listening to them talk about their game as they go through it is fantastic.
it is so cool how they used the original model for the ring and voicelines for the epilogue. what a beautiful preservation of their work from the previous 12-13 years, at least at the time reach was released.
Almost feels like Marty is the only one trying to get into the light hearted bantering like the previous dev commentaries. Shame the other guys don't really seem too into it.
@@zafelrede4884 They interact at regular intervals. But Marty is the only one constantly trying to be cheerful. Gotta realize... probably not everyone at Bungie wanted to let go of their baby.
@@shepardren8006 A lot of the humor and fun from the halo 1 and 2 commentaries came from the limitations the devs were under when making them and shortcuts they had to take. With Reach there’s far less of that because the game you see IS the game they wanted to make and it turned out almost exactly like they wanted to. Hence the more revenant tone from this commentary
@@clintbustwood4800I seriously doubt it turned out exactly as they wanted and they didn’t have any limitations. They’re just not as funny or entertaining as the trio in the other developer commentaries, even though Marty tried
@@GodyP Sure, i am being hyperbolic, its impossible to create the "perfect" version of an idea, thats not feasible nor is the absence of limitations but with the resources and knowledge they had, I can't imagine they weren't at least brushing those fulfilled ideas. But yeah, these guys are also far more business than reminisce
Marty’s music is such an awesome backdrop for combat in all of the halo games he’s worked on. I find myself fighting with emotional content and becoming better as the music is thumping providing me melody and rhythm for the dance of combat. It’s part of what makes Halo campaigns so immersive.
1:24:52 bro!!! When we get mod tools we need to add this cut mission back in!!! Driving around a scarab in a glassed city!!! They even had a working prototype!!
Just a little timeline for those who want it - 1:04:10 - Jorge Death 1:21:00 - Kat Death 1:38:00 - Carter Death 1:42:05 - Emile Death 1:53:38 - Noble 6 Death
Something about Joe not being there makes this weird as hell. I really like Marc and don’t know the other dudes… I never want Marty to bow down to Microsoft again, but I need him in Halo. It hurts my heart.
Call me ignorant but I never realized just how much work, care and thought has been put into Reach and other Halo games. Thank goodness the algo brought up these documentaries and commentaries. So much respect to these artists; your work is amazingly fun to explore and play and so, so loved by many!
When he said at the end that the Halo ring in the cutscene is the original ring from the Halo 1 Menu, my eyes watered. Them knowing this was their last Halo game for them to throw in the OG Halo model was a really nice throwback.

1:23:28 "More butt" Love these devs and their love for curvy butts . 1:30:32 "Embarrassing photos of actors in spandex" 1:36:24 "Subtitle of Reach, chockfull of butts" 1:40:22 Forklift run confirmed xD 1:46:15 I don't know why but I'm tearing up... Curse your 343 for removing this... =(
"Curse your 343 for removing this" Eh, really you gotta blame Microsoft for this unlike 343, because microsoft decided not to put those in, even if 343 wants to.
I'd love to imagine that an elderly Jun (identified by his tattoos) oversaw the dedication of the memorial to Noble Team (they made a figure of the memorial), with the words "To the saviors of Reach" underneath the statues.

Didnt play reach as much as I probably should’ve as a kid but, I’m appreciating it more as time goes on, has some QOL integrations and the graphics are basically upgraded halo 3 graphics without the juicy looking colour textures, it captures a lot of the OG halo- especially compared to the things that’s been released with the Halo name now a days.
I love how the design team literally spent months working out how the indigenous people lived on the land, how they cultivate fish and crops to create this living breathing atmosphere...... Halo Infinite is like... "Bush POP In NeOW"
@Karlimo Reach is certainly the last time I felt amazing playing a Halo game. I just hope they decide to drop support of the old hardware and just focus on unleashing every bit of power the series x has and develop Halo purely for it. otherwise their design scope in general is going to be limited... kinda already showing its cracks.
@Karlimo halo 2's developent was rushed in 10 months. Massive content was cut. It came out good because of sheer staff dedication and passion. Infinite's creative director has abandoned the project. Development hell doesnt make a game better, it makes it worse. Bungie succeeded despite crunch time, not because of it. Dont conflate the two. Halo 2's E3 demo was mind blowing it innovated so much. The exact opposite of the dumpster fire that is infinite. Delay infinite to 2022.
@@MinistryOfGamersMOG yeah forget xbone. Just series X and PC. Delay the game a few years and polish it. If we cant engage in diametric warfare on both sides of the ring, then this shouldnt be the last halo for 10 years.
@@keilafleischbein59 I'm pretty sure that whole 10-year game thing for Infinite is just PR bullshit, like how Destiny was meant to be a 10-year game. The fact that Infinite is a cross-gen game is all the proof anyone needs that they will be making a new Halo game that's fully next-gen in a few years time, and if anything that game will have a longer cycle than Infinite will.
@@brup123 destiny was meant to be 10 years, but activision dun goofed and fired Marty Odonnell. He got $36 million in unpaid shares. If they didnt want to keep paying him, they had to put out a new game.
Ah always good to learn from these kinds of videos. Also crazy to think, if you didn't stay and man the gun at the end, Halo 1 would've canonically had 2 spartans on board the Autumn. 1:27:20 Unfortunately tank controls still suck with keyboard on PC but that's 343's fault at this point.
technically linda was onboard the autumn in a cryopod serverly wounded from battles on reach. was ejected when the convenant attacked and was picked up by chief after the ring was destroyed and later resussitated by halsey
Reach is such a masterpiece, easily one of the best in the franchise and one of the best games in history. The characters and the story were phenomenal, 343 could have learned alot from the Bungie games. I sometimes wonder if anyone at 343 ever played a Bungie game.
7:50 No, "gedink" doesn't mean get back, my best guess is the voice actor pronounced "get in" weird. "Azt mondtam befelé" means "I said go back inside", AKA "I already told you once, now do what I said" which makes no sense because he only tells them once
I don’t think Marty was the one that wrote the phonetic lines for it. I think he was just shooting from the hip on what he remembered the gist of it being
4:25 These dudes really thought Noble Team was going to outshine Master Chief due to "removable helmets." Sure Halo Reach is a great game, and the characters are fine, but Master Chief will always be the iconic hero of Halo. 343 had to learn this the hard way when they tried to replace Chief with boring Locke.
@@Evbuscus1 i dont think it was a poor choice. Bungie wanted chief on ice and bungie wanted to explore new characters. 343s mistake was waking chief and still trying to replace him.
It was confirmed by Martin O donald, that Carter and Kat were in a relationship. Because, they where the original noble team. Plus, that is why they are very close
Actually, they were wrong. The three protagonists that never had a face (Master Chief, Noble 6 and the Rookie) ended up being more iconic than anyone who took their helmet off.
@@ADUSN who did he work for at the time? Bungie. That makes it a Bungie novel. This isn't even debatable bro you're throwing shit at the wall and hoping it sticks.
marty is joking around and knows its a video game, the other guys dont have the banter or self awareness of how absurd halo like they did in the halo 2 commentary lol
I suspect the development of Reach was a much more serious endeavor than 2's. Microsoft was probably breathing down Bungie's neck quite hard during Reach's development after seeing the financial potential of the series grow with each new game.
@@FutureNaught you can only imagine. They thought 2 was they end, but they pumped out 3 more games. Bet they were ready to be done but Marty was just chillin making music haha
This commentary is way more dry, technical, and boring as a result. Lots of "oh yeah this is cool. we did that. that was cool." instead of interesting stories about tribulations and behind the scenes disagreements.
I couldn’t think of a better send off. Unlike 1,2, and 3, Reach and ODST didn’t have the limitations and necessary cutting and short cuts to finish them. Reach and ODST ended up, more or less, exactly like they wanted them to. A completed vision of all their efforts.
7:55 I'm sorry to say but NO. That "Hungarian" Jorges speaks in several cutscenes and what the farmers are saying is so bad that I didn't even notice it was Hungarian at first. I only noticed that it is because a few years later on one of my many playthroughs I decided to turn subtitles on. Without those, impossible to understand it's so bad.
Nah, these are hands down the best Elites in the series, in both gameplay and their appearance. I love the armor for specific ranks instead of them wearing the exact same armor. Kind of a shame they didn't use those designs in Halo 2 Anniversary
@@nagger8216 I’m not a fan of them they look more like big jackals than elites. They definitely look better than the later versions but they don’t come close to the elites in 1-3
Lol I love how they talk about how long the credits are but games now have even longer credits, halo infinite has 28 minutes of credits, this was only 7.
The game is so short and the characters are so one-dimensional that their death scenes don't land. If the game was longer and gave you more time to invest in these characters, as well as showing them interacting in more interesting ways, then it would've been impactful when they died. ODST did a MUCH better job at making you care for your squad, making their deaths actually feel sad and tragic.
Such a shame that Bungie is a shadow of its former self, and we all know Marty was unfairly fired back in 2015 I think? I'm betting none of these other high up Devs are there anymore either...
Lmaooo yup. We also need need a level where we drive a warthog through a banished ship and blow up its core; a mission where we drive a forerunner tank; and one where we steal Atriox’s medallion.
Got that right but even so with all the things they keep adding, the flood firefight and more, maybe one day either the Mods of TMCC steam or the 343 devs that keep making content for TMCC will add it.
@@Monko_pop uh did you listen to the video? They aren't being sarcastic. They literally say they were sensitive to it and got the dates right. The only joke is the description of a jigsaw puzzle, yet that just adds credence to how they're being serious. They even said it fits perfectly. Where's the sarcasm here? They reiterated multiple times that they were in sync with the canonical book. Obviously this isn't true.
@@SoulbentAnime not often someone has a solid argument to people saying “you can’t detect sarcasm?” but you did it, it’s hard to beat those sort of insults
@@SoulbentAnime they are saying it in a sarcastic/joking tone. i picked up on this too. it's funny because they are obviously aware the timelines do not line up.
Who’s the one playing..? They’re actually so like.. nooby..? Hitting a jackals shield down going to another jackal just to get shot by the previous jackal? Or hitting the hunter? Then running behind the second hunter just to turn his back on it and go to the other one?
