Leaving the door open might be our only chance to fix this show now lmao. And the bunker was because they were at war with the UNSC so it was to guard against them more than animals.

That whole scene was so bizarre, I think that'll be a bait and switch and she'll turn on them and suddenly be good. You can't have an evil human type B. It'll be she was raised badly and is being taken advantage of but really deep down she's good.
The Prophets having a “Covenant human” undermines the entire premise of the genocide directed towards humanity by the Covenant. It was literally a coverup due to a mistranslation of a Forerunner glyph that contradicts the entire Covenant religion.

Show's either gonna be about her or she's gonna be the tired trope of "angry child/teen who touches the heart of jaded old man whom he tries to guide/protect." Logan did that well, but the "Badass and Child Duo" trope is mindlessly copied, and had been there since the earliest Western and Samurai stories to Mandalorian. At least Baby Yoda isn't annoying. I don't get why they like to make them annoying these days.

They started calling 117 the demon in Halo 2 after he destroyed the 1st Halo ring. In the game it was a insult and a sign or respect. In the show it's just a key jangle
Also, at least Starship Troopers had the excuse that Bugs had a specific weakpoint that would drop them in one. But when the Bug's scuttling around a lot and eating your face it's kinda hard to aim for it, so a group of nobody noobs wouldn't be able to pull it off. A group of hardened soldiers later on would be able to peg them somewhat reliably. I mean it's flimsy, but it is an excuse.
Oh yeah in Starship troopers they do explain it and there is a very small news report that says "we've been improving our guns" too. I'll give Starship Troopers a pass for it easily, it's within suspension of disbelief. That chaingun though...

(Miniguns are spooled on by an internal electric motor, chain guns are spooled by an engine attached to chord and driven by a chain, nerdy little distinction for ya.) It's every single weapon. A plasma rifle can vaporize a dude, or just hurt enough to make him groan and fall over. An MA5 is able to drop an Elite with one burst, but a mag dump from an AK. (Same cartridge 7.62 × 39) does nothing at all. It's just? Actually the entire show is just inconsistent as hell.
The was no movie Starship Troopers. They made a ridicules bug hunt movie and slapped the title on it. A lot of mentally bankrupt people try to camouflage it by saying it was "satire", but it was just Ver'idiot continuing on his rant about all military being brainless idiots and assuming people are stupid enough to follow his lead. There was news just before the couf that someone that had actually read the book (un-"fixed" pre-1990's version) and intended to actually make the book into a movie or series. But I have lost any real hope of it after seeing this abortion and some of the other woke lead destruction of IP's in the last three years.
I'd assumed they'd at least make you pay for it and put you through some punishment. I had no idea they'd punish EVERONE around you though. I guess that encourages everyone to look after everyone around them though, as it's a group failure.
Shows like Halo, Rings Of Power, Wheel of Time, etc all make the same fundamental mistake. If your going to make a show that has a built in audience you need to keep it relatable to the original fans of the series. People aren't going to thank you for pushing your own half baked ideas onto a well established IP while ignoring the source materiel and everything that made it great. Even more insulting when these new ideas your trying to push are a bunch of crap like each of the aforementioned series.
The weirdest thing is they buy the IP FOR the built in audience, that's why those IPs have value. Then they think they are better, more talented than the original people so they think they can change all of it and keep the people staying. They think people will just like thing because it has a badge on it. At this point, I'm not even sure the buck should stop with the showrunner, or the writers. Someone hired them.
I know! It's like they assume that fans of X will watch X no matter how bad it is, so they only have to care about getting people who have never heard of X to watch it. But if it's good for the fans, they'll be the first to tell everyone to watch it, and if it's bad for the fans, they'll be the first to tell everyone how much it sucks. If you're making an adaptation, it should be something first and foremost that the fans will love, and *then* you can worry about expanding to other demographics.

Went and double checked with my loremaster of a roommate, in canon, Halsey is legitimately brilliant, she figured out how to map her own synapses to an AI without killing her own brain, as AI are usually created from dead soldiers' brains... she is, however, the scapegoat for things that went down while the UNSC had her under contract for creating the Spartan 2s... Oh, and John didn't kill his family in canon, he was taken from them and put into the Spartan 2 program long before he was in puberty...
Adams you should be the show runner. not the Woke SJW Director that couldn't care less about HALO and the fans they only care about getting out there message and Pablo does not want to wear the Helmet because of vanity 😒. This review was so honest and 100% correct. I laughed my ass of when he caught the fact that Kwan got everybody killed at the settlement brought the Covenant right to them all and she left the bunker door open so the woman and children would be killed. In The fall of Reach novel John even ends up back on his home world of Eridanus II to capture a rogue UNSC colonel, and states while he knows it’s home, he feels nothing from his old life,
When they will change her entire personality simply because she got knocked backwards by an alien onto a rock. I'm not surprised at all face makeup changes. This is the issue, they already decided LORE can be different. Once you remove the main foundation from your show, you won't care if everything else crumbles.
Something that is especially bizarre to me is this notion of John, Spartan II 117, somehow being turned against the UNSC as being even remotely a potential thing... because, in the books, John has a few moments throughout his life in which he gets to sit back, relax a little, and *think* about his past and what got him to where he is, what was "done" to him and how he lives now - this becomes particularly important to him after he actually starts to engage with the wider world and the UNSC and comes to value and cherish HUMAN life in a way he was unfamiliar with throughout his abduction, conditioning and boot-camp, "graduation" and then moving into full-service. It's a really complex, layered awakening he has and it's very gradual, but also very profound for him. He starts off VERY mechanical and very binary - orders good, targets bad - but he comes to question some of the things he's done himself, in the past, in pursuit of his goals or just in his training, but he also appreciates what he is. I mean, the galaxy at large has no idea how the Spartan II's were inducted into the program, but while they're ignorant of who and what they are, the Spartan II's themselves are *not*. John fully remembers the night he was abducted and how brutal his conditioning and training was but, in the end, he looks back on it with little to no regret and a profound appreciation for what Halsey and Chief Mendez were able to do *for* them and *to* them. John appreciates his conditioning, he appreciates his purpose and he fully appreciates the fact that he is not only the greater weapon than an orbital MAC cannon, but that he is part of a greater whole of individuals whose individual worth can be measured, commensurately, in cruisers, frigate battlegroups, battalions and and tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of Covenant lives. I mean, what person in their right mind would look at the cost of the Spartan II program and say "No, it's just not right - what you did was evil" when the alternative was *two* nightmare scenarios: Endless civil war and unrest resulting and billions of human lives with no end in sight or Actual systematic genocide at the hands of alien zealots, literally paving the way to *their* Heaven with *your* bodies. John knows what he is and while he sometimes pondered life "before" he never felt a strong enough pull to even being to do anything about it. Even if the Covenant had never arrived on the scene, he would still have ended up being an instrumental hand in the future of his species.
I always deeply appreciated that John could look at the whole picture with a degree of professionalism and stoicism. He could appreciate his accomplishments without turning into a cliched "haunted" veteran. Then I grew up and went to war myself, and my appreciation for that character only grew more. I'm sick of writers who have never been to war thinking that the only thing you can come back as is a PTSD-riddled emotional nutcase.
I do not think we will be seeing this kind of thing any time soon, not in this or anything else. 1. This shows a level wisdom, compassion and self sacrifice that is beyond the woke writers imagination. 2. The idea that the Spartans were a necessary evil or that the "evil goverment" did smth that was for the greater good is not smth they want to show. Had this kind of thing being part of this show or mindset this show would have been a classic, now it is just woke garbage.

The reviews are cathartic and psychologically important. The creators and supporters all gaslight on twitter and in blogs trying to appear as though they’re the majority and it’s just a few fringe fans that have ridiculous issues with the show. It tricks people into thinking they alone have issues with the show and gaslight them into thinking, “maybe I’m the problem.” No, the problem is lazy writing, arrogance and contempt for the source material.
I torrented the first episode, if it were good enough I'd use my free month of Paramount+ to watch the rest, but the first episode was crap. Even from a non-fan perspective, it is just garbage. Entertaining sometimes sure.
About the heroine being useless in the beginning: that reminds me of when I studied The Aeneid in school. The teacher pointed out that Aeneas just stands around watching the Greeks take over Troy and suggested that was a bit of subtlety from the writer to suggest Aeneas wasn't the best hero. Of course these writers aren't epic poets and didn't realize at all how her inaction would make her seem. Also- I looked up the girl's height- she's just 5'2, which is my height. I'm quite a bit smaller than average people, nevermind the kind that have spent much of their lives working out and training for battle. Thanks for your review! It was around the 32 minute mark when I realized my mouth was open in amazement at how bad it all was, lol.
I wouldn't have minded most of her running away, but when her father got trapped in front of her, so she left the bunker and didn't go to help him?! I was amazed. And even then if they'd kept her character the same, ok. But they flipped her 180 degreees for no reason and suddenly she's standing up from the worst position of weakness she could be in. Made no sense. And absolutely, I wouldn't comment on height of a character at all normally. But from how they flipped her to standing up to USNC, there is no way they won't be building her up to some kind of fighting machine as time goes on. And she might end up fighting huge aliens with already increased strength over humans. I'm all for suspension of disbelief, but there are limits before it becomes parody.
Do you know what the funny thing is? The incredible irony of the showrunners not playing or caring about the games but how the Spartan II's favor their pistols over their rifles ;D Halo 1 pistols were FAMOUSLY over-powered - hard-hitting and pin-point accurate. I frequently kept a pistol as my secondary throughout the campaign unless I had a good reason not to - or overwhelmingly better alternatives. Also, not only was the pistol a best in the first game, but the AR was a joke - it could put a lot of bullets downrange, but it did so inaccurately and weakly.
@@CurtisDofMontana False. The MA5B, MA5C, MA5K, MA37, and even the MA5D are assault rifles. Both by definition and by description in lore. The MA5B in particular was the Assault Rifle in the first Halo game. It was as stated less damaging than the Pistol, given both the Pistol's instant kill headshot capability and its equal effectiveness against shielded and unshielded targets.

@@CurtisDofMontana ur mixing up real life with Halo. I get the frustration that "all rifles are ars" to scare the normies but likely Halo people called that gun a ar or it's listed as such in game. Either way, now's not really the time for correcting gun types in such a real world manner. There's a bunch in Halo that's not real world accurate. And I'm just guessing here. I'm not a halo fan but I've seen Halo people go crazy knowing all the technical info on weapons and armor and vehicles in game even if it isn't right in real world it is right in game/books. I also know many real world gun people that lose there mind when every assault rifle is called an AR since it's used often and maliciously. So, just saying, odds are both are correct and it's just now's not the time to lose it over that specific trigger.
-Spartans moving and reacting quickly in combat, but Kai-125 still manages to fall when a section of the wall is blown out before her feet, she should've easily reacted and vaulted over that gap using her Spartan reflexes but she didn't. -John taking off his helmet was a definite no-no, I mean, what moron would remove his protection when an emotionally unstable teenage girl was pointing a high powered assault rifle at his head? She could've just as easily changed her mind and riddled John's head with 7.62s. -The gun toss was just UGH, for one, a Spartan would never discard his weapon, he should've just reattached it to his back, but that CGI rifle toss, good lord. -The look of Reach was... fine to some extent, it just reminded me of Atlantis from Stargate Atlantis, however seeing frigates, destroyers, Pelicans, Warthogs, Marines in full gear, that was a nice touch, and the Warthogs DO have the tri-barreled 50 cal mini guns. -They did go a bit cheapo with the Marine BDUs, who's clothes are actually in the US Army digital camo pattern, and I have no idea who thought it would look good or be a good idea to have the magazine pouches places on the lower backs of the Marines' gear. The Covenant scene was actually pretty good, High Charity and the Prophet of Mercy looked damn good, mofo was made creepy as hell too, however the human girl who was "adopted" by the Covenant, that's just a horrible breach of lore integrity.

I loved this. Thank you. I've played Halo since day one. But what I have been telling people, how bad this show is has nothing to do with Halo. Its a shit show without even mentioning the actual Halo elements. Not to mention it had 75% the budget of Mandalorian, and yet had 10 year old CGI, plastic weapons, cardboard guns with no effects, messed up costumes cut to cut, missing special effects, and the entire show looks like it skipped post-production. "People who don't even have the intelligent to understand why you should respect canon, will inevitably be awful at everything else." Thank you. I wish this could just be posted as a headliner for every damn "adaption" these 'mainstream' idiots considered doing.

The only real “navy” they had was a loose confederation of ships at The Rubble, which mind you lore was was in the same system as Madrigal.
@@5RndsFFE Captain Keyes had to fight them. That's how he became famous. The rebels managed to wipe out a detachment of ships with their own fleet, but Captain Keyes was able to save his own ship and turn the tables on them. It's a significant part of his backstory.
The fact that a human is in charge of this covenant operation to recover forerunner tech invalidates the entirety of halo. This show is shyte. It was the only reason I was considering a paramount+ subscription and between this and Paramount shilling for the left via star trek's "president of the Earth" being the most incompetent US politician Stacy Abrams.....hard to come back from this. This would be like if in Lord of the Rings, the elves somehow are able to make the Ring of power. Multiple of them. (I know Shadow of War and Shadow of Mordor did this, but it's not canon and a shite story, just like Paramounts Halo).

Yeah the covenant seemed to be really focused on killing the villagers. The Spartans were killing them easily and yet the covenant were focused on killing the girl despite that fact. You think they would ignore the useless villagers to fight the Spartans.
Kwan’s reaction to seeing his face is essentially how the writers think the audience would react. Because they think seeing a face suddenly makes you human.😑
Spartan II's were humans and the group of Spartan II's that made it past "graduation" (their bio augmentation) intact and serviceable was incredibly small - I forget the exact number, but I am pretty sure that before graduation there were something along the lines of 60-70 Spartan II trainees and, afterward, between 27-33 physically and mentally intact Spartan II's remained... so what a Spartan II "was" had a little bit of give to it, and while we know that some Spartan II's were bigger (I think Sam was the biggest) and some Spartan II's were faster (I believe Kelly was the fastest) and some Spartan II's were more wizardly with their weapons (pretty sure Linda takes that cake), we know that John, Spartan II 117, was "average" (the physiological average of a bunch of superhumans), he still stood over 6' in his MJOLNIR armor and that, fully geared and in-suit, he weighed over 1,000 lbs. Later suit upgrades with better shield generators made a suit of MJOLNIR weigh even more, as well as the added layers of AI-supporting/reflex-enhancing crystal layering as well as thicker and more sophisticated armor plating and non-armor nanoweaves. So Spartan II's just got a bit bigger and heavier. Then you consider in what ways John wasn't average - easily the bravest, the best leader and touted by Halsey to be the "luckiest" - and the incredible laundry list of achievements (dwarfing even his teammates) for all the action he has seen and the experience he has gained... Sorry, that's all I could think of when you were saying "Keep this in mind for the future" ;D A Spartan II was a terrifying demigod warmachine... a Spartan II with a functioning AI in-suit was something else. I don't know... I just can't see a show, nevermind a show like this, doing the notion justice. John and Cortana are *the* power couple for a reason.

@@5RndsFFE Correct me if I am wrong here, but I seem to think that I have read some where that Halsey originally wanted 300 candidates for the program, but do to a lesser budget and other restrictions, it was cut down to 150 candidates that had the genetic markers that she was looking for and out of that number she only picked the 75 that would be selected for the program. Again do correct me on this if I am wrong as its bin a hot min sense the last time I read up on this
@@lazarmarinkovic8486 Yes the project was initially granted funding for 300 candidates though no date is provided for this, however by 2517 this initial funding had been cut allowing only 150 candidates with the genetic markers suitable for the program of which Halsey had to further condense down to 75 due to more budgetary cuts. I believe I also read in some of the text material supplied with the Reach collectors edition that’s why she decided on the name of Spartans, as an homage to the ancient warriors of Greece and the 300’s exploits at Thermopylae.
Shows how out of touch they are. Should have been a layup with all that money and so many elements to reference from. Like get people that actually respect the lore to make the show and it would have been a hit.
Glad someone pointed out all the flaws in the fight sense. Everyone on RU-vid said it was great... But after watching it I thought the fight was completely illogical too. The second act of the show I enjoyed more.
I'm very surprised you enjoyed the second act more. If you're coming from the point of the fight had inconsistencies and the 2nd half had less I can understand why. I have a huge issue with pacing, and it felt like even if this was cut down to 40-45 minutes, they still didn't have enough to say.

Don’t think too hard on the MacGuffin triangle. It’s just that, a MacGuffin. Or maybe more correctly a Deus Ex Machina. And the Spartans “remembering” their past is stupid because they KNOW all that. They remember being abducted and were told they’re being conscripted and cannot go home. Halsey specifically mentioned they had to do this to remove the risk of defection. Fred, one of the chief’s teammates even said he’s glad to be a Spartan, otherwise he’d probably be dead as his home was glassed by the covies

It seems like they've royally screwed up a lot of basic stuff about the main characters in the Halo universe... because, Catherine Halsey, as wonderful and as pivotal and as commanding as she is, she was never a UNSC servicewoman... she was always described as, billed as and approached as a "Civilian Contractor/Consultant" as she muses, a few times, about her lack of rank within the hierarchy despite being the mind behind the MJOLNIR armor system and the Spartan II's, and how the Spartan II's treat her with reverence, deference and respect... they salute her even though they know they don't have to ;D She didn't "raise" any of the Spartan II's, but she was integral in their lives and they all know her and respect her... and it probably wouldn't be inaccurate to say that, in their way, they "loved" important, central figures in their lives and upbringings, such as Halsey and Mendez, as much as any uh... "alternatively raised" person could ;D "Love" is definitely a strong word, but there is an awareness, an attachment and an appreciation. I can totally buy Catherine Halsey holding more than enough sway with any and all of the Spartan II's so as to countermand and override any and all standing orders beyond the obvious preservation and protection of the UNSC and its citizens. Also, I don't mind pointing out that even with their shields down, any Spartan II could not only take the bullets from any UNSC standard assault rifle, but probably dodge more than a few of the shots, depending on the operator of the weapon. I can't see a jerkoff insurrectionist stoner really giving the Chief a run for his money - what an empty threat.
Not only that, but I think I remember reading that Halsey was able to identify every Spartan II, just by look, even when fully decked out in armor, suggesting she had spent so much time with these people she knew who they were by such minute things as body posture or they way they moved.

I went in with low expectations but holy shit they fucked this up so badly. What really REALLY annoys me is they expect you to already know who and what Master Chief is, but this is supposed to be a different timeline so HOW am I supposed to know what's true to canon and what isn't. How am I supposed to get attached to this character when all they've done so far is show him have a random flashback and THAT'S IT. NO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AT ALL. They did a fantastic job alienating fans of the series and casual viewers. Fuck this show, I'm just gonna wait for your breakdowns so I can laugh along with you. PS: The media player Paramount is using is fucking godawful. I got the free trial to watch this episode and there are no video quality controls and it played at a constant 360p the ENTIRE TIME. Sometimes it dropped to 240p. I'm definitely not wasting my money on this streaming service.
I'm not surprised lots of these awful series feel like they run out of content immediately. It's an interesting thing that Angry Joe said it though. He LOVES the ideas etc that get shoved into this show and others. He's fully behind all this stuff. So him not liking something really shows how awful it is, he's their target audience.
Something that has bothered me about most visual-media adaptations of the books is how utterly non-standard the Spartan II's MJOLNIR armor becomes... when, really, the suits were such sophisticated things that they had quite a lot of gear built into them and what wasn't built-in was carried along as extra gear. The benefit of uniform, standardized gear being that it was cheaper to produce (MJOLNIR armor was prohibitively expensive), easier to mass produce and it created a degree of redundancy in allowing for one Spartan II to change, exchange and salvage gear from another if the need arrived (and it did, sometimes, in the books). If every other member of your squad had specialized, unique gear compared to yours, then the interchangeability of gear goes *right* out the airlock and not only can one Spartan II not support the other, or scavenge from the others if need-be, but then supporting a squad of Spartan II's is no longer a matter of being able to fix one type of MJOLNIR armor, but three, four, five or more types of armor in one go. I dunno, I mean, I know the reason why it was done in visual mediums - to help people differentiate between the Spartan II's, but personally, to hell with that. I want my armor of identical iridiscent-green Greek demigods to look imposing as all hell, part of the intimidation being that ONE green-clad demigod is a "demon" to the Covenant... so what does that mean if demon 117 has four, five, or twenty-five friends? ;D Besides, it's not as though you could really devote your visual art to exemplifying the visual differences in the form of mannerisms, movements, tendencies and their VOICES, as well, sheesh. That's a personal grip from me.
They really dropped the ball on the gear, but it was mostly just so they could create unlockable equipment for the games. The lore had to give way to the game in that sense. Not unreasonable, but if you're going to adopt it to film, you don't have that excuse.
In visual media, they could have done something like what was done with the members of Delta Squad in Republic Commando. Undifferentiated in terms of armor except for some markings or even just their numbers (and obviously size differences between actors).
I always took the increase in bullet damage during Starship Troopers to mean the Federation was adapting their weapons to the Bugs and using more effective ammo, etc. At the end of the film they proudly show off the new ships and weapons they have developed, so it's not outside the realm of possibility. I am of course, in no way whatsoever making excuses for this particular show though.
The instant they said "this is a different universe" they already threw all of the lore into a fire to burn. At this point it's just them cherry picking bits they like that will fit in their checklist, I don't think they care at all why any of those things existed or how they fit together into a cohesive story.
I will defend one point. In Halo 1 the Pistol was a weapon that was effectively slightly weaker than a sniper on headshot. So one COULD argue that that was also an Easter Egg/callback to Combat Evolved.
Yeah but they also have guns that do different damage depending who fires them. So I highly doubt game accuracy was what they thought of here. Plus they said this is a different timeline from the games, so to me, anything from the games is literally thrown out.

I have been in the military and losing your firearm is a pretty big deal. You have it with you no matter where you go or what you do and you never ever leave it anywhere (except when it's under lock and key while in the barracks). I'm so glad I don't care much about Halo, but it's nice that Halo fans get their share of what WoT fans got a while back. EDIT: Also you can't write characters smarter than you, so every single character is bound to be an absolute muppet.
Wheel of Time will be worse for me because I cared about the Wheel of Time. Is it a worse show objectively? I would still say Wheel of Time is worse plot and character wise. But Halo was FAR more boring. And this is just one episode, so Halo has plenty of time to catch up to Wheel of Time when it comes to equally bad characters and plot! Wheel of Time had a better first episode than this one if I'm comparing 1-1.
I've never played the games, so I don'thave any idea what the Canon of the Lore would be. As a writer, though, I know that it takes much more talent to write 'within' the canon of a universe than it does to toss it out. Just like the Wheel of Time and the Rings of Power to come... this show is NOT HALO, it is Fan Fiction from the progressive idiots in Hollywoke. Who cares?
I could see the argument if you have to be both within cannon while creating a new story. Because then you have to remember all of the details of everything before you, and make everything fit. But that's not even what anyone I think expects. They have the stories of the games and the books, it's all made for them. Sure later on when you run out of already existing stories to adapt, you may need to do something new. But by that point you should know the franchise and have the talent in place. And I think it's VERY easy to adapt a story as close to 1:1 as you can. It's just like tracing artwork. The only thing required for that, is talent and care. But the advantage of starting this way is you get the staff into a way of thinking that matters, "cannon comes first". Not them, not the writers, not their opinions or ideas. Hollywood needs to learn the lesson that no-one is here for them. They're irrelevant. They're here for Halo.
@@disparutoo Right. Let me toss in an example here, about wriing 'in canon'. There is one more thing that is required to do this, and that is a detailed knowledge of all that has come before... you have to know the canon to respect it. I will give you examples for three shows.... First, I could write for The Wheel of Time, as i have read all of the books, some of them, more than once. If I wanted to write a new story line in WOT, I could create another character from the Two Rivers region. He is a Coplin, so he comes from the family that no one in the area truly respects. He is one of those men whom 'The Old Blood Sings' in, so he will become a channeler eventually. We will call him Cen. Cen Coplin is a smart guy, even though he comes from a backwater area. When he gets the notion that he can channel, he weighs his options and decides to join the Dark One, not because he has any great ambition to do so, or to rule, or anything like that, but because he doesn't want to go mad and break the world again. Cen could become a Dark Friend and be an antogonist to Rand and the otehr EF5 characters, or he could join them and be the wolf in the fold. It would be 'different from the Orignal story, and thus would 'break' the canon but it was working within the canon when it was devised. I understand the details of the canon and know how it would be breaking it. If I kept Cen aside and waited until Tame and the Ashamon come looking for men, then Cen could just become one of the Ashamon and not really break any canon. Cen could have a redeption arc and be one of the loyalists who turn on Tame and Help Rand to win back control of the Ashamon. I know this, because I know the Canon. Secondly, I could write episodes of Doctor Who, prior to Doctor Karen. Now, I know all the TV show history from the New Who but my knowledge of Old who is more sketchy. I saw a fair few episodes but it was less available to me back then so I didn't see them all and I've never gone back to catch up. I starte with Tom Baker, saw several of his stories and some of Davidsons. I saw the TV movie too. That is a limited understanding of the entirety of Who Canon but I could probably write stories for a new Doctor that never really stepped on canon issues form the Old Who too much. If I wanted to be sure, though, I would have to go back and watch more than 20 seasons of television for Dr. Who. That is quite a commitment in time and effort. It might be best if I just made up new 'bad guys' who never appeared in old Who so that I didn't make mistakes. Thirdly, Halo. I've got nothing to work with. If I were a writer of that show, I'd be stuck with reading a wiki, talking with people who've played all the games and read the books, or I'd have to do all that myself. If I don't know the canon, I can't respect it. There would need to be someone on my team who did have all that knowledge and even then, they would have to carefully watch over all that I did. As a creator, that would frustrate the hell out of me and it would severely limit my creativity. Again, it wold be better to add in new content so that it didn't contradict canon rather than try to write in content that respected a history that I was not fully versed in. I would make a poor choice for a writer on HALO today, unless I had the time and the availability to read and play... to learn the canon, so I would have the necessary tools to work with. That is exactly who they are employing now, though, people who haven't got the background in HALO canon... so they 'can't' respect Canon and Lore they just don't know. They are there because they are leaning toward the right side of the political landscape, they have a certain skin color or they identify as the proper trendy noun of the day. They aren't there because they have the stuff to be a good writer for the show... so how could it be anything but Crap?
Indeed, absolutely NOTHING. They stole some of the Aesthetics, the names and that's it. This seems to be standard protocol nowadays. And it's so strange because the only reason to use an existing IP is to get it's existing fanbase. So why would you change it, and LOSE the existing fanbase. Which then makes the IP worthless?!

Bait and switch to their own character, same thing has happened with the marvel series. It's their way of trying to make their own series without having the talent to make their own series. They don't realise it doesn't work.

At least Starship Troopers had an explanation in-movie for their increased effectiveness: the spiel with Doogie Howser about aiming for the brain stem.
So one of my friend's hyped this up and he genuinely liked it. And watching your whole review this seems much more painful that what it is...guess he couldnt see through the message but hey to each their own right?
If people like it that's fine by me, each to their own. It's always interesting to hear which shows they don't like though, where is the quality bar set. I also think it depends how you watch it, if you just have this on a side monitor while doing something else and you're not paying attention. You could ignore the majority of the boring parts by doing something else, not notice much about the fights not making sense or how the characters change. I watch a LOT of stuff on a side monitor I couldn't ever sit down and watch as my sole focus. And that definitely changes how you would talk about them.

Sadly my friend really sat down and watched the whole thing while fanboying the whole time... I should know, since there were 3 of us in the room. Honestly after that ending, whatever they call it it'll remain a magic triangle because nothing about what that thing did made sense. It just coincidentally, and without being told or commended, knew what to do, and how to do it. It's an omnipotent device and using some "any sufficiently advanced technology is magic" idea like I think they will go with doesn't make sense. Because that only makes sense when there are rules and limits as to what is possible.
On the fluctuating weapon efficiency (which makes threads impossible to judge): Are pistols usually more deadly than rifles, maybe dependent on range? (I'm German, we mostly know a lot less about guns.) Also, why throw away the obviously superior plasma pistol. (Could have added some sign of overheating, but that probably was too much thought.) Also also, considering one tackled a heavy car out of the way, the Elite running through Kwan, who couldn't even see him, should have killed her... twice. Once on impact and once on landing with her head on a rock, after flying like 100 meters/yard. Something else I just thought off, about the oxygen scene: Maybe the effect of the Deus Ex Machina artifact gave him an extra boost. Let's see if it ever comes up. Not that it would make things better, as we'd go from no explanation to Deus Ex Machina. yeai...
Those last 2 are good points, especially the elite would have smashed the entire side of her body in if they can stop a car. And the last, they could retcon it that the magic triangle helped. But as it only ever activated when he touched it, and it would always light up when activated I doubt that's what they intended. But it is an out for them.
At short ranges, there's not much difference between a rifle and a pistol, at least when firing single rounds. At longer ranges, the rifle wins out due to increased accuracy over a greater distance. Rifles' greater size also makes recoil control easier due to how you would hold a rifle versus a pistol, and there's more actual gun there to absorb the shock of the gunpowder going off. The lethality comes from where the target was hit, the size of the round, the shape of the round, what the round was made of, and how fast the round was going. In the show's case, the logic of how the weapons worked relative to one another was pretty much nonexistent.
@@John-fk2ky So switching form rifle to pistol for the kill shot doesn't make sense? Especially if the riffle bullets didn't penetrate the energy shield in the first place? That was my first thought, literally while watching.
There's a tremendous difference between rifles and pistols, even at short distances. It isn't even a close comparison, especially when looking at the cartridge designs used by most militaries. Look up the ballistic and energy figures of 9mm luger, .45 acp, 5.56 NATO, and 7.62 NATO ball ammunitions and that will be obvious.
Oh don't get me wrong I don't know the Halo lore. I was going to learn it but when the showrunner said they were going to ignore all of it, didn't seem like there was much reason to. There would be nothing to compare. But that's the thing, it's not just a bad Halo show, it's a bad show. Failing upwards seems to be an art in Hollywood.
Lots of awful shows based around big IP's get the same treatment, same for Wheel of Time. They just assume "brand" will automatically carry it to victory and views.
I almost fell asleep. Now keeping that in mind yesterday I watched the bungee movies and I fought sleep. So that tells you something. I will be playing the games so that I can check out the lore.
While I am absolutely loathe to even give any more time to this god awful show (your review is great) I have to say that the children for the Spartan II project were abducted and replaced by clones when they were.. between 5 and 7 years old - I think they were seven. They were *genetic* exemplars of humanity but their background, their upbringing *up to that point* was kind of anomalous... BUT... normal, for human colonist children of that tender age. I'm pretty sure that none of them, nevermind John 117, were making sketches or drawings of any future events - he was an exceptional young boy, but still a young boy and not the "future chosen one" for anything. That's the great thing about John in the books - he's the grittiest, the most determined, the natural leader and the bravest of the Spartans... but it was something he was made into, from his base, constituent genetics, and given the chance to become more. He was crated into an amazing person through the guiding hand of Chief Mendez, Catherine Halsey and Deja. He was selected from a gigantic pool of people for being the most ideal of candidates, but still, he earned what he became by sticking with the program, not washing out and not dying. And that's, honestly, one of the sweet things about some of his introspection in the books - he looks back at his life and remembers when he was just a kid and that he's in his home-system, but he feels no particular pull, no overwhelming curiosity or any real need to go back and discover or try to reconnect with *any* of it, because whatever he was then and what he was going to be, it's different now - now he has a grand purpose and he has a place he appreciates and a family he cherishes, even if he can barely remember his birth family. For everything that was done to him, he was also *given* something.
Rewatching the Halo series review considering the second season...and wow, Type B has a huge kill count in the first episode (all of whom are het friends and family)
So the lymphatic system is a bit like your circulatory system. Instead of blood it carries Lymphatic fluid around the body. It consists of lymph nodes, lymph vessels etc. As far as I know you cannot ignite anything in the body. Maybe they meant inflamed?
Yep, I think they meant inflamed and changed it to ignited because it sounds more severe. And I think they just googled medical words that most people will have heard of but not know much about, so it seems like they are more intelligent and knowledgeable than the viewer. It's a common trope, often done with hacking or computer terminology in shows. They always seem rediculous when you know anything about the topic.
I like the Starship Troopers reference. However, that movie was self aware. It was absolute schlock. They knew what they were doing and I thought it was wonderful. Halo looks like a huge dumpster fire and these creators think that it's a masterpiece.

I mean I did find Kwan annoying and the series full of flaws but the way you explain it is unparalleled. I wish we had real intelligent critics like you in the mainstream as well then these streaming services and studios wouldn't dare come out with one descretion after another destroying our favorite games, books and comics. As a father of a teenage girl, all of her reactions at the beginning are completely justified. I don't understand why you believe she should act like a battle hardened veteran. She's panicking. She's not going to make good choices. Neither would you.
As a woman myself, I just wonder WHY there always have to be some unncessary woman characters? That main character and covenant girl just feel like some stickers that just needed to add there just for... I don't even know why. The point is, I can and enjoy watching shows with 100% male cast (also, there was already good female characters in Halo), and I just find it insulting that they need to always add these (for example) "angry full of vinegar" type of females to every show as "powerful" females. Like if you want a male character, just make it, I don't care about the trope anyway, but I would like to see actual feminine character as powerful and valuable for being feminine. I know females with masculine traits exist, but I rather would be without any female characters than forced ones that you can see are just some hollow message delivers (in this case "we have these powerful females"). Also, what I would do if I were a show writer I would find ACTUAL fans who know about lore and do fact checks with them, include them in making the series. It should not be that hard. I don't know why these show writers instead choose to make bad series.
If a person thinks that everyone should be the same, they have to eradicate every difference on the planet from every person. So both type A and B need to be pushed towards the other until you end up with an amorphous blob. However to the leadership, they do think that the traits they are showing are positive, the difference comes from the point or morality. Not everyone has the same moral structure, theirs comes from a point of power. Anything done to improve ones own power is good, because they think they are innately on the side of good. Now to normal people, this is an abomination, it comes across as tyrannical and a person no-one should ever look up to. But to them, they're really strong type B's who will never let anyone stand in the way of them getting what they want and being true leaders.
This is the review people need to watch and it's a shame it's not getting more views. The pacing in the story is terrible and all your notes on the weapons and handling really puts it to light (and everything else). It's hilarious that this is what a $200m show looks like now. If you want to see some inspired Halo content make sure you check out Forward Unto Dawn and Landfall. I would love to see what could happen if all that money went to people that actually cared.
