One of the most appealing video in years. This burro may have taken 5 steps. That rancher has an ocean of patience.

I walked my donkey today, and he stopped, and he started to try and rip and buck and pull the halter from me. I didn't let him. He is a well behaved animal. I am also new to him. I held my ground. He was upset because he was separated from the horse he is usually with that he was raised and rescued with. Once again, he threw a fit, but I let him know that I don't want him to run away and that I wanted him safe. On the beginning and the middle of the walk, I also let him know that that this was new to me and I wasn't too sure but I wanted him to feel that I trusted him. It worked our in the end. It upset me for a second having to wrestle this lovely guy, but he made it up to me in the end. I'm so grateful.

Thank you for making this. I’m getting some blm burros and needed some visuals of what to expect. I’ve trained horses and mules, but donkeys are a new one. Thanks!

When you create the pressure on the rope you need to hold the pressure longer. You do not need to increase it just hold it longer. Give them more time to think about moving their feet.

I used positive re-enforcement to halter train our BLM burro, he got carrots and celery, now he comes up to me on his own. Minus the treats, he does get ear scratches and rubs and he loves those he’ll drop his head

I’m watching his breathing. He seem’s to be breathing rapidly.

I believe it’s really good if you talk sweeter and treats and a lot of rubs 🥰 Ohio

at the 10 min mark you could see him drop his head just a little bit...when you were petting him...just barely.

Negative reinforcement translation: the animal is winning the tug-O-war.

Why not consider adding in positive reinforcement through luring?

Melinda S I give positive reinforcement in the form of touch and positive voice. I’m not a big believer in treats. Although, I do offer treats early on to break the ice.

My donkey is like this. I have only been able to touch her once. Turns away from me. I have been taking it easy and working around her to get her used to me. This video shows that I’m on track.

That may not be a wise choice,,when the animal is not conditioned to the presence of humans,as the one,in this video..Even more so,when the animal is confined in a small area..I have a close friend,who has a chunk missing out of his back,from turning his back,on a wild Burro..

Do you use just donkey or do you train mules?
@cacatr4495
@cacatr4495 6 лет назад
Thank you in advance > When you say "tucking their tails", do you mean like dogs do when they're afraid, tucking their tails between the legs, under the belly?
@cacatr4495

You said, " Look at those lips", there at the end. I saw what he was doing with his lips, but what did it mean? Thank you for your reply on this.

For someone who used to ride horses, but has never owned one or a mule or donkey, for a first time owner, would you recommend a female donkey over a Jack?
@mountainridgegear8172

CA Catr licking lips is sometimes seen as a submissive gesture. It can occur after a stressful situation. When equines get nervous they tend to get dry mouth (just like us). Licking the lips indicates the equine may be returning to a normal state as his mouth isn’t as dry as it was while he was experiencing the stress. So, liking lips and swallowing can be looked at in two ways. The animal was nervous and he’s communicating that. Second, he’s beginning to show a sympathetic mindset to what I’m doing instead of fight or flight.

CA Catr I prefer geldings. I’ll talk about this in my next video.
@mountainridgegear8172
@mountainridgegear8172 6 лет назад
CA Catr they tense up their backs and hind quarters as a way to guard against stress. They saw me as Predator so they were constantly on guard. Once they seem more relaxed with and more fluid body posture I know they are beginning to tolerate my presence.

Can donkeys kick you if your are on their side?
@feabeara
@feabeara 4 года назад
Conall Mannion donkeys can side kick. I think they do this because they are over excited, or just annoyed with you. They do like to bite. My donkey is still youngish.

NatureWatcher treats create bad habits. They associate humans with food. What do most people do when they put money in a vending machine and don’t get their candy?

Hey - he didn't show how he got him out of the pen into the other!!! How long did it take to get him to move forward, etc. How is this teaching us to lead train if we didn't see how he got him into that pen - did someone get behind him and push him out - or what????
