Thanks! We've been using your soft shackles on our half dozen hammocks, and this pigtail loop looks even easier to make and more useful. Very useful explanation on why the thick portion of the line mustn't extend below the knot. The easy untie Beckett Hitch feature alone makes it worth making these to replace our soft shackles. Thanks. Time to make some new loops!

The way the end is turned over for the loop, a figure 8 loop is likely stronger.

True. Lot's of thing are stronger , like the button would be higher tensile for example. The double overhand one works a bit better in this application and is more than strong enough

Thanks Jeff, looks way easier to tie/splice than the button knot. IMO, though, it needs some testing -- will the double overhand knot on the doubled (very slippery) Amsteel hold for months or will it need to be re-tightened every now and then?

We've been using the double overhand rather than a button on a dozen hammocks, and it's never come undone or slipped out. After the first couple times under tension it hardens into an impossible to untie ball. Jeff's tip about not allowing the doubled portion of the line extend below the knot should make it even more secure.
