If anyone else had trouble with the shuttle slipping, I was able to make it work by using 3 turns through the shuttle's fixed loop, or by having the fixed loop lark's head around the main line.

This is a UCR, I have been using this as my Adjustable ridgeline in my hammock for years. I also carry a few if I need a suspension as well. Rule of thumb (as you call the shuttle), if I plan on carrying my climbing weight a minimum of 8"~12" in the bury. I also use the half turns in my trucker's hitches, locks down, and keeps it taught. BTW your stuff I like a whole lot better than what Dutch has to offer.

I'm quite impressed with the UCR design, particularly the half-turn feature. I crafted a few for my recent camping expedition, but faced two challenges. Firstly, the half-turn wouldn't firmly grip the main line, and secondly, the shuttle would slid along the main line when I put my full weight in the hammock. For reference, I weigh around 200lbs and utilized a Grand Trunk Single Hammock: Nano 7. I'm contemplating extending the shuttle bury length to 8-12", as suggested in some comments, and perhaps reducing the size of the half-turn loop. Could there be something else I'm overlooking?
@jeffmyers7062
@jeffmyers7062 10 месяцев назад
weird , these work past 500 pounds no problem for me , you can use a 36 inch main line and milk the bury too, the half turn is just there to milk the bury automatically anyway ....

Another great video Jeff! 👍 Have you ever considered using this 'shuttle' idea on a tarp ridgeline - for tarp positioning? I'm thinking it might be good for winter tarp setups because it would be more glove friendly than regular prusiks. I still haven't looped a pull-loop inside my prusiks yet, which may be the better solution. I'm going camping soon and I have some extra 1.75mm dogbones. I'll test it out on my 1.75mm ridgeline and see if it's a decent idea. Just thinking about it right now I think it will be better than my prusiks as far as ease of use goes. I'll try to remember to let you know how it goes. If it works great I'll make a video. updates on other things I've commented about in the past: I made UCRs for my (front porch side) tarp guy-out lines and they work great! I was worried they might slip, but they've worked flawlessly on several multi-night camp-trips. Going between porch mode and storm mode takes me seconds with no fiddling. My tarp panel pullouts are dogbones with a prusik, with the prusik then installed onto the panel pulls. I think you've covered this in a video. It makes it super easy to adjust the tension of the pullouts going to my trekking poles sitting over the ridgeline. Another idea I mentioned once was using button-knot prusiks on the tensioning side of my tarp ridgeline. It's hard to explain, but I have two prusiks that connect together with button-knots to take the place of the knot on a truckers-hitch-style setup. It works GREAT! I can build up a lot of tension, it's easy to undo, and I don't have to put any crazy bends in the mainline. Thanks for sharing all your ideas! Anytime I see someone asking if someone just sells this stuff pre-made I make sure to give them your info. 👍
@ramocan02
@ramocan02 3 года назад
I just use a prusik knot. Yesterday I upgraded to las-it prusik+soft shackle combo on each side of the tarp and it works. I guess that a UCR would work, but supposedly it requires more length for the bury than a simple prussik. Shorter buries may work with less tension. I'm going to try the pull-loop on my silnylon tarp later, using 1.8mm reflective cord
@nathansharp3193
@nathansharp3193 3 года назад
Rolando Mocan : When I was rigging up my tarp I wasn't sure what style I wanted to use so I made my porch the UCR style. After several months and at least 30 nights using the tarp I've learned I like the prusik style better. It's just lighter and more simple. The UCR is still pretty cool in its ease of adjustability. I think if I lived somewhere colder (I'm in Texas) then the UCRs would be easier to use with gloves on. The prusiks can get fairly tight and require a little finger manipulation to loosen. And for your info, or anyone else reading: I used about four-inch buries on my UCR with 1.75mm Zing-it. I've never had any slipping, even in gusty winds where my tarp is bouncing around. I ended up making a larks-head at the end of the UCR with my loop (dogbone style on both lines) I never knew the purpose of when I made them. That completely secures the UCR in bad weather when the tarp is flapping.

I appreciate this tutorial but I am having some issues. I have used this and another UCR tutorial and have had similar results. I am actually wondering if it is something to do with my amsteel. I built mine with yellow 7/64 Amsteel which I had purchased on a spool in conjunction with some grey 7/64 I had laying around. What happened on both occasions with UCRs was that the far end of the shuttle where the extra line comes out ends up slipping and in doing so the threads of the amsteel get bunched together effectively tightening the weave and leaving a trailing section with the shuttles amsteel's threads all pulled apart... I have built 4 different UCRs now all with similiar outcomes. I don't see this as an issue with your design. I just figure you have seen some stuff and might have an idea. Does this make any sense? Do you have any thoughts?

Same here, I'm quite new to hammocks and tried UCRs over the weekend. All my cordage is 7/64 and both constrictor shuttles have 8 inch bury (measured before inserting the main line). BUT I had followed other tutorial that had bigger eyes on the end of the constrictor, and said a prusik or other friction knot on the free side of the constrictor shuttle (the side pointing to my hammock) wasn't necessary. I use the UCR inverted to Jeff, with the shuttle attached to the anchor and my hammock hanging from the main line. For safety, I did a slippery half-hitch on the loose tail of the main line, about an inch before the bury. Under load, the main line slipped and the half-hitch almost got buried within the constrictor shuttle. When I wrangled the lines free from each other, I was left with a big gaping hole on the shuttle, with about 3/4 of an inch of loosened weaves. THEN I tied a prusik knot on the main line using the free eye of the constrictor (the one pointing to my hammock). Slippage stopped. But the damage had been done and I have retired those constrictor shuttles. I made new ones using this tutorial and left over 9 inch bury (measured before burying the main line), which resulted in an actual bury of 8 inches. I did Jeff's half-turn, but find it doesn't hold like a prussik with a larger eyehole. In ANY case, with the longer "real" bury, I have experience no slippage... so far.
