Oooooh just started the vid now, though I might have to come back to it a bit later. I'm a professional Japanese translator so I'm here to translate any extra details for our CJU, if he needs it. I'll just pop translations in the reply. If anyone else has any questions, feel free to reply too!
3:12 'Be mindful of the corners when cleaning the stairs!' and (arrow pointing to) 'rubbish' 4:13 'How to take notes. 1- write the date, 2- Circle important parts with red, 3- use a mini ruler, 4- use picture and diagrams.' 7:31 'Use toilet paper with care' i.e. don't waste. 8:17 Yume says 'this might be hopeless!'. 10:56 The Dodomeki is a woman turned youkai, cursed with hundreds of bird's eyes for stealing money. 14:56 Letter: 'To Riku Maeda'. 15:14 'Tree of warm words'. 16:53 'Do not run by the pool!' 20:05 'Rainbow - Do your best in your own way. Year 2, Class 1'. 26:43 'Persevering kids who take on all challenges! Year 1, Class 2' 37:53 'Postive Goals: Consideration, Cherish once in a life time chances, Don't give up, Be cheerful/healthy. Everyone can do it together!'. 40:02 Left: 'The sea of Japanese Lit. How many kanjis with the fish radical do you know?' Right: Can you match the kanjis?' 41:00 Book: 'The Cursed One(s)'. 44:14 'Welcome to the Library', etc. 44:50 'My First Dessert Recipes'. 45:25 'We have new books'. 45:44 The Jorogumo is a spider youkai that can transform into a beautiful woman. 54:02 CJU is right. Most schools in Japan follow the same floor plan and layout. That's why it's a common point of nostalgia for Japanese people when they see schools in dramas, manga and horror games like this. 01:00:05 'Do you know what these are?' 01:20:21 'Bonds'. 01:20:48 'Days till graduation: 26'. 01:21:42 Kubinashi is a youkai with a floating head above their missing neck. 01:22:25 'Ofuda', a talisman used to seal evil spirits out or away. 01:29:10 'Puzzle, 32 coloured pieces.' 01:40:28 Yata no Kagami is a sacred mirror that is an heirloom of the imperial family. 01:49:49 So, it seems all the posters and background items were contributed by supporters of Chilla's Art!
@@thesmackdragon You're welcome! It's a shame it wasn't stuff that would be more useful to the gameplay but I suppose it might help to offer the same immersive experience the Japanese player would get.
I don't know how many Japanese viewers are there, but I really enjoyed watching this playthrough as one of them. Thank you CJU!! Hanako-san is one of the most popular scary-stories, especially told in elementary (and maybe in junior high?) schools. Never been in school at night time, but with all those details, it brought back memories of telling ghost stories years ago. I kind of liked the details too, so it's a shame there were no translations. By the way, someone may have mentioned this, but "Ohuda" is kind of a charm or an amulet. It's a paper with a spell inscribed on it to be pasted on various things to keep the ghosts and spirits away or to be sealed. "YataNoKagami" is a mirror that appears in a Japanese legend and said to have holy powers. Along with a sword and a stone-bead amulet, YataNoKagami is one of the "three holy items". Hope this fills in the blanks for someone.
For anyone who cares about the logic to the calendar puzzle: Add up the numbers by each week that aren't marked off with the red line Week 1: 1+2+3+5+6+7= 24 And because only one number is marked off this week the number starts with 1. Week 2: 9+10+11+12+14= 56 Two numbers marked off, therefore the number starts with 2 Week 3: 15+16+17+19+20+21= 1108 Week 4: 22+24+25+26+28=2125 I like puzzles and this one was fun.
Merry Christmas and good luck with the moving! SPOILERS: There's 3 endings in this game, one of them is the normal ending (Eri goes missing and is implied to become the new Hanako), the other 2 endings have you enter a portal to Hanako's domain after she has been defeated and you find Eri near a haunted well filled with blood. You can: examine the well and drink the blood coming out of it, becoming the new Hanako (bad ending) or: lead Eri away from the well and back to the mortal world. The girls give up cursing the bully and everything returns to normal, one day a new transfer student is introduced to their class and is named Hanako. The new girl looks straight at the MC and says, "You, cannot, escape, me!" (true ending).
I love this channel so much that it's one of the few I watch without an ad blocker and watch the ads without skipping (most of the time). RU-vid is not exactly fair to the content creators, but I do it in the hope it helps with the channel's monetization/algorithm/technomancy. If by chance you read this, Chris: I hope the move went well, you had a good Christmas, and all is good for you! Thank you for the videos!
What an amazing coincidence! As a Christmas gift to myself, I've been going on a marathon of watching as many of your older videos as much as possible since early this morning. I caught a recommendation of Hanako for another youtuber I follow and found myself wishing that you would play it. Low and behold, I refresh your page and I see that you've played it! My Christmas is complete, even though I can't be with family🎉 Edit: Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays/Just have a great day. Thank you for the upload
Thank you dearest CJU for all the years of fun viewing you've given me. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years. I love you, Man! 😄💜
I was looking forward to it the whole day, not gonna lie) Time to take a break from studying and watch some nice relaxing content)) And, of course, Merry Christmas!
I know schools are scary, but I wonder what´s behind that obsession with japanese horror games set in school. Maybe it´s like western like most of horror stories set in asylum and psychiatric wards. Not complaining! Just caught my eye.
If I had to guess Id say its because Japanese students have to take part in school club activities and school festivals and events which requires them to sometimes have to stay at school after dark. The creepy experience of being in school at night I guess just stays in their memories inspiring them to use that in horror games. I'm not 100% certain thats why since I'm not Japanese but that would be my best guess. Either way its a pretty effective setting for a game.
@@miroslavzima8856 I mean, you have the woman whose mouth was cut on both sides and now her spirit goes around asking kids (7/8-12 years old) if she is beautiful. Than the spirit that kills teen girls in the last stall in the bathroom. Another bathroom spirit asks questions and you can only anwser with colours or yes/no. (Japan has alot of bathroom demons/spirits due to students havng to leave super late after school ends) There's also Yokai that target students by trying to 'take them home'. If a Yokai finds you to be super good-looking, you're stuffed. It'll either hunt you forever and keep your soul or kill you. Fun times. Japanese folk lore is really rich and has mixed elements from other places like Korea and China. Tailand and Malaysia also have spirits that have mixed elements with mostly Japan. Myths and Folklores are really awsome to me. Sorry for the long comment. You got me talking. Russia and Poland have the most freaky folk lores, in my opinion.
@@cinuzuka Wow, that's a long and descriptive comment! Glad you shared it :) I often watch those horror games (game Pamali had rich folklore).I would probably have a bad feeling after going home from school that late. It's interesting :) Oh, that's true! European folklore is quite brutal.
I'm not japanese nor attended a japanese school but I also had a ton of experience staying in my school at night also due to school activities and events over several years. I wasn't the type to scare easily compared to my schoolmates but I still got anxiety when there were just a handful of us in a large dark school at night; passing through dark eerie empty classrooms expecting to find someone or something lurking inside, staring at you from the end of the hallway or a floor above you, and you get alerted to every minor noise you hear especially when you're tasked to retrieve something in another room all by yourself. plus its made much worse if your school already had unfortunate incidents in the past and/or has supernatural rumors going around. with that said, I can understand why japanese kids that grew up to be game devs would often inspire them to set their horror game in school.
The games where the school is the location of the hauntings are the ones that really get to me. A haunted house, hospital, or asylum is something a person goes to looking for trouble, but a school is a place you are made to go to for a very large portion of your formative years and to have that place also turn out to be a dreadful place of horrors is just further insult to injury.
I always thought a haunted school is a silly overused trope, but you made a really good point here! Hopefully devs will try out new ideas with that theme like that Gravewood High game.
Happy (belated) Christmas everyone, and a hopeful New Year! Thanks for the gift of a 2-hour video, Chris, particularly during such a busy time for you. And it's more fun from Chilla's Art! I don't know which intimidated me more--the human-head spider or the washiki (healthier and more efficient though they are). Lol
Merry Christmas Chris and everybody! Thanks for keeping your word and giving us a long video today! Hope you have a good holiday- happy new year and please be safe! See you Upon your safe return!
A two hour video on Christmas!? You spoil us! (Also, you were right about the posters being set dressing, most of them say things like "Don't forget to clean the edge of the stairs!" and "Don't run near the pool!", or they're just motivational posters)
Having lived in Japan for many years, I can say that this game's atmosphere is 100% authentic in it's representation of a school. I can read the things on the wall and the discovered items, and I am surprised they do not have a translation...they are somewhat relevant to the storyline. The game is a little rough around the edges, but I liked it. Good job as always, CJU.
I started keeping track on the off chance the messages would start getting weird, but they were all pretty standard stuff. 3:12 Be mindful of the area around the stairs and clean 7:36 Let’s use the toilet paper carefully 14:58 To: Maeda Riku
I think I got the logic behind the calendar puzzle (1:24:50). You have to think it in weeks. The number of dates crossed correspond to the first digit and the sum of the dates that aren't crossed makes the second, third and fourth digit. Week 1: 1 date crossed & the sum of the dates that aren't crossed is 24; hence 1024. Week 2: 2 dates crossed & the sum of the dates that aren't crossed is 56; hence 2056. Week 4: 2 dates crossed & the sum of the dates that aren't crossed is 125; hence 2125. So, Week 3 will be, 1 date crossed & the sum of the dates that aren't crossed is 108; hence 1108.
The calendar was my favourite part. When he started going through numbers while staring at it all I could think was "does this actually make sense to him?? Jeez, I'm a lot more stupid than I first thought." But when he went and tried every combination until he got it and I was like "oh no, I'm cool!".
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all! This was fun to watch you play, Chris, though I have to note that the 2 other places where you needed to place a ladder were marked by orange ribbon, so I expect that the Auditorium ladder you found would have been used on the balcony where you entered the area. But great that you could manage without having to use it (and that your inventory could support carrying it around 😄). Best of luck with the move (to another country? I've done that, so I wish you the extra best), and see you next year!
Favorite part of the video: 1:24:21 That laugh is infectious! XDDD Thanks for the video, and happy holidays to you, Chris! Hope the move goes smoothly and safely!
Thank you for uploding this. I hope it doesn't sound creepy, but I wanted to thank you for lots of little lights and smiles during a very annoying year. I really do like listen to you (again, I hope it doesn't sound weird :D ). I wish you all the best for 2021.
I've been marathon watching CJU gaming videos, this is so fun to watch him play bc I love horror games but not by playing them 😁. I like CJU voice and the accent is just perfect. Always supporting you, keep up the good content #IndieGames #Hanako #ChillasArt
I'm watching this again and I laughed so hard when you saw the spider head for the first time and said so British-ly "Fuck off!" 😂😂😂 it still sounds polite somehow I just love listening to you talk lmao. This is one of my favorites of yours.
This was such a delight to watch for Christmas weekend. And right after my birthday as well! 😃 It was a decent length of time. The game and playthrough was entertaining. You sounded like you were having so much fun. The laughs and banter. It was infectious. Thanks for the content as always! Hope you enjoy your time away and the move goes smoothly. Merry Christmas to you, take care, stay safe and see you in the new year!
Hope you had an awesome Christmas and new year Chris. This was an awesome game; loved the playthrough. It's definitely Chillas arts best game to date. Didn't have time to watch over Christmas but it was a welcome distraction today. Hope the move has gone or is going well. Can't wait for more videos; hope to see you soon
I had a dream about you the other day it was really weird, I won't get into it lmao. But anyways as always love your videos ❤️ and hope you had a great holiday and new year 🎉
At first I thought it will be a copy-paste design game with few aditional arrangements but in the end it was fun complex game that I really liked. Thanks for that Cju! All the best for you in, I assume, better year than 2020 was. I wish you many new life opportunites and a joyful feelings for a whole year! And for the chat I wish all of you guys happy spirit and remember to never leave your home without your YataNoKagami!
The game looked and felt a bit cheap, but it was a lot of fun! I loved your laugh when you broke the combination lock ^^ Good luck with the move Chris! And Happy Holidays everyone.
A game about a Japanese ghost in a bathroom. If that isn't tailor made for Chris, I don't know what is! And almost 2 hours long! Happy Christmas indeed! Wow! Did I hear that correctly? I did not realise moving "home" meant moving to a different country. Good luck with that move, Chris! Hope it goes smoothly. SPOILER: EDIT: Aha! I figured out the calendar/padlock puzzle in the Janitor's room. You need to add the numbers in each row (excluding the numbers crossed out) of the calendar.. it doesn't give you the first number, but the last three. I guess the first is based on the first numbers in the other rows (1 - 2 - ? - 2, so the ? is also 1).
So Eri becomes the new Hanako and stays in the school haunting it, forevermore tormenting visitors with math tests that never end and forcing them to eat reheated mystery meat dishes from the cafeteria every day. What a cruel bitch. Jokes aside as an FYI, I can't remember if you said it or not CJU but for those out who don't know there are multiple endings for this game.
I'm more impressed by the fact that CJU broke the "Calendar with Writings" puzzle through sheer stubborn will than if he'd actually solved it lol-it's atypical of him! I did manage to solve the puzzle, so here's the logic: Add all the numbers in each row, except the ones crossed out. 1st row: 1+2+3+5+6+7 = 24 3rd row: 15+16+17+19+20+21 = 108 I'm guessing that the first digit just alternates between 1 and 2 from row to row, hence the code is "1108"! Great playthrough. It was hilarious that you were proper panicking at the last boss fight too! Hope all goes well with your move CJU. Happy new year :)
4:19 i never thought i would hear the flashlight obsessed man say he doesn't need one! 1:22:48 i'm surprised you didn't figure out the calendar puzzle despite some of the significantly harder puzzles you have solved. all you had to do was *add the numbers of each week ignoring the crossed out ones* 29 is not used. 1:40:27 a mirror i believe. a special one.like a mystical treasure.
