araknidude That pommel should be good enough to make a permanent impression on a light steel helmet. If the crossguard was a bit longer than you could punch with it too. Moreover, you could flip it around and use it as a hammer/mace.
Yesterday, I was in one of my usual fights, but this time, my opponent hid behind a car's hood. Good thing I had my Hand and Half Sword! I easily severed his body with the sharp point of my blade! Thanks Cold Steel!
I bought this weapon about 3 days ago and today i finally got it. I have in my back yard so i decided to try it out on some lemons in which was not ripe yet, I tryed squeezing lemon in my hand and it felt like it was pretty tough. When i finally bought the sword over to cut the lemon i threw in the air and sliced it in 2 like butter! The sword is HUGE and its blade length is about 3 subway footlong sandwiches "in food measurements" I recommended getting this sword over alltheotherones awesome.!
LOVE Cold steel. The Cold Steel 80TFTC (11" fixed blade) literally saved my life in Afghanistan. I am not kidding when I say I LOVE these blades. Always wanted a sword by them, though now that I'm not in the military anymore my paycheck is a bit smaller. But this looks like a BEAUTIFUL sword.
I truely thank you for your gratitude. Though it is not necessary. I was lucky enough to come home and that was all because of a Cold Steel knife strapped to my IOTV. You should be the one receiving MY gratitude. So thank you.
I know you didn't. But my grandpa was a WW2 vet and he was so traumatized by the war that anytime I'd ask him about it he'd put on his 'mask' and tell me he didn't want to discuss it. He also had a PTSD issue where he would flip out if someone covered his ears. Sorry, I don't mean to attack your curiosity, but many vets come home with various degrees of PTSD and it's better to ease into a question like that rather than come out with it upfront.
I'm actually not that offended. The most common question I am usually asked is actually "Have you ever killed anyone?". But I DO happen to have PTSD. Although recently I have started attending a local support group for it as I got tired of no sleeping at night. So no, I don't mind talking about it, though that kind of conversation can sometimes be graphic and best now used in a thread. Especially when it comes to stories like how a Cold Steel knife did actually Dave my life. I miss that knife.
Sword manufacturers guide.com:This blade was a beast of a cutter. no resistance on my strikes, cutting light to medium targets, but then I noticed the pommel wobbling. I stopped to cast a puzzled gaze at my friend and it fell off. Cold steel replaced the sword but I had to pay shipping both ways. The new one does not handle like the old one (the new one has poor balance) and the pommel looks slightly off line with the handle. It also makes a 'clink' noise when you tap the pommel with your hand.
I just got this sword, and wow! It looks and feels awesome! This blew my expectations, which to be honest, were pretty high. Looking forward to cutting stuff with it.
I just got my hands on one of these swords. I was immediately blown away by the simple elegance of the design, and then shocked by just how terribly sharp the darn thing is. Awesome sword. This video hardly does any justice.
In my neighborhood, I had to constantly live in fear of aggressive water bottles, lengths of rope and roving gangs of beef briskets... thank you, Cold Steel, for giving me the self-defense tools I need!
i have this sword. its an all around good weapon. vary light, fast, and fun to screw around with. i hacked through a couple thick tree branches when i fist got it and the edge held up fine. the thing i like most about it is the length...not too short and not too long.
Had one, blade heavy and cut well, but guard came loose and rattled. Exchanged for another and it did the same thing. Only cut rolled wet newspaper. Ended up with a crecy and love it.
Dear Cold Steel: I would like it very much if you guys upload cutting tests shot with a Phantom Flex Camera. Pd: The bend test was quite impressive. Nice work.
Okay so review time. I have this sword and i do HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) so I am not just a schmuck with a sword. I have been training with this sword everyday since in forms and swings and flex test. I took the sword to my dojo and to my father who is a mechanical engineer (knows his metals very) all were impressed by the strength and balance of the sword. I have handle many swords, reproductions and ancient blades, and this is what I have to say about the cold steel hand and a half (long sword). It is the best sword I have ever used before I am so so very happy with buying this sword. Cold Steel I have purchased many of your polypropylene training swords. For your prices and the quality of your blades and other swords real and training. You guys are impressive. If I may make one small adjustment with your hand and a half. If it had a fuller even if it was half way down the blade it would make this sword even better than it already is. Your loyal customer. P.S. I will be buying your great sword in due time. You have sold me.
When bullets no longer work... This will be my weapon of choice. Absolutely love a hand-and-a-half blade. For WMMA-probably the best all around bladed weapon of the European Middle Ages. Nice blade the demonstrate here.
XVIK Strong doesn't mean anything in regards to metals, materials (metals in this case) can have compressive, impact, fatigue, tensile and yeild strength which are all the materials ability to resist force, strong implies the metal can itself exert force which of course makes no sense at all. And just to blow your mind ductile cast iron has higher yield and tensile strength than titanium. Just saying, ;-)
You made me crack up there man, thanks Btw I completely agree with you, I used to be like *katana or no sword for me* when I was younger, but when I got older, a bit of research made me realize that european swords are as awesome. This baby in the video is amazing
It is more of a Millenial vs Gen X thing. The Millenials are all about the Katanas while the Gen Xers like the european swords. It is because gen xers are mostly Anglophiles while Millenials are Japanophiles
I just got mine in the mail today. this thing is incredible. Though I will say I can not accurately tell but the blade on mine may be slightly askew from the hilt. making it have the impression that the blade "leans" almost to one side.
@Grimganker Chainmail was designed at times when there were either stubby Gladii designed for stabbing (though not fit to pierce armour) and Spathas (as well as Oakeshott type X swords) designed for cutting. Longswords were designed to deal with armor by stabbing. If you want to cut through, get some wire shears or a blowtorch.
For me, it cuts ok... (I sharpened it for 4 days.) But the rust mannn it rusts! Even with oil. I swung my sword through 6 water bottles and I see rust forming!
1:50 shows what this blade is about. In the time of heavy armour piercing swords this relatively light sword would give double the attack rate, either sword and shield/knife/mace, or, using 2 handed being able to move it twice as fast. This is why the Roman Short Swords were so effective against the Briton Long Swords. The long swords could reach over the tops of shields and chop through armour, but were no help when the warrior had already been stabbed through the guts during their upswing!
Iv got swords and I love cold steel products... But I live in scotland unfortunately. I say this after his "this could save your life in a fight" comment. Truth is in the uk. If an intruder came into my home, and I was to defend my family with one of my swords or knives. If I successfully protected my family and survived, I'd still lose my life. This is because my country would call me a murderer and locked up in prison for years. Destroying my life and my future, because I killed a real criminal who could have been a rapist, murderer, thief and I was unwilling to allow them to hurt or effect my family or myself. If you enter someone's home without their permission for any reason, where their children sleep and they are Ment to be safe, you should expect to die. If that was excepted by my country I would agree with the statement. But In reality it won't save your life in a fight. In the uk you will lose your life even if you survive.
It really is unfortunate that the United Kingdom has become such a "Nanny State". Kinda makes me glad I live in the U.S, where it's only somewhat of a nanny state. (No offense to anyone in the UK of course.)
@Proscriptus Except that if I defend myself (in my home, in the scenario of your example) with a sword cane (banned in the UK) I would go to jail no matter. UK laws are ridicolous, let's be honest. We should (I mean, we European) imitate Texas, Georgia etc where people can legally purchase M16 etc :-)
Just so. Good steel is good steel. Japanese samurai were largely archers anyway. The balance and lightness of a proper arming sword is unbelievable. It is a work of art.
Would love to see a murder stroke test with the hand a half on concrete and mild steel sheets just to see how the crossguard holds up.What is the crossguard made of and hows it secured?
I've got one of these. Pretty good sword, very sturdy and hefty. Only thing that's bad about it, is that it's one pound heavier than the originals ( maybe try adding fluting to the blade ) and that fact that the pommel is not peened, which gives it some minor durability problems that most threaded swords have, what with the pommel unscrewing after some use. I give it a 7.5/10. Sturdy enough, and reliable for a good time, although it'll require extra maintenance due to the threaded pommel.
The best thing about cold steel commercials is i never want to by the sword because of how it slices (its cold steel, there name speaks for them on that part), what gets me is the comercial itself and the tests with guys who do wild swings and generally look hilarious, definatly getting one when i have money.
When you do the outside segments, are they like, filmed outside your offices? Just wondering if there are people watching from their apartment windows terrified of the dudes slicing shit up with swords or not. Genuinely love the vids
@MichaelkSimmons Not that I have either, but in general the viking sword is meant to be used with a shield. Hand and a half can be used like a two hander. Also I think the crossguard on the viking sword, and the sword itself, is smaller.
i must say i do enjoy these Tests, It gives me an actual display of what a product is capable of doing, and what its limits are, nice stuff. and also, that shoe test made me cringe when i saw the meat inside ;)
@csknives Alright, thank you. Still, your products are just unbelievably awesome, and hopefully this sword will become the third Cold Steel item in my collection.
@TriggerHappyChicken I thought the same thing. In the Great Sword vid the guy said you could defend your home... or something like that, but having a gun is so much more practical xD
I have been a fan, customer and advocate of your company for many years now. Do you think you may start producing sword belts at some point in the future? Or do you know any quality companies that produce good sword belts?
@1337cole1337 - That is actually pretty impressive. One of the tests to become a certified 'master' knife maker is to cut a hanging rope of 1 inch diameter. That rope was at least 2 inches. And this isn't even a laminated blade.
That would rock. Though a factory tour would kick ass. I have respect for someone that get their hands dirty. I already got the Spartan and can attest to its sharpness of your knives as I have a nice gash on my finger ;-) Nothing serious-just messy.
It's not a full sized two-handed sword. Hand-and-a-half swords have shorter handles and blades, so they can be used one handed easily but can fit two hands.
I wonder how the dagger compares with the arming sword companion dagger. I like the more subtle shape of the latter more and it is more pointy, but would it perform similar in cuts?
I am in tears laughing. Cold Steel definitely understands their customers. Buy a sword online....what to do with it...."I'm going to chop stuff up" YEAH!!!!
just overlay the ginsu knives commercial over any of these videos and it's hilarious "It can even chop wood and stay razor sharp!" "It can even cut through a tin can and still cut like this!"
If someone busts into my house at 2am I don't think they'll be coming into my house wielding a freaking sword that I'd need a parrying dagger to fend it off.
