In this video I am carving a piece of Derbyshire grit stone into a memorial stone for Jessie the dog. I will be carving using only hammer and chisel and painting by hand

Firstly, you are an incredibly talented person. What you do makes a difference to people. Bravo Sir👏👏👏. Recently said goodbye to our family dog Oscar. Would like to carve his name into one of the patio slabs where he would always lay. Best attempted with hand carving tools or cordless rotary tool? Many thanks and keep the great content coming!

Hi Silver Steel, really sorry to hear you lost Oscar. It’s always hard saying goodbye. A lovely way to remember a man’s best friend by marking their favourite spot in the garden. Love the way you chisel letters, just amazing I am all inspired thanks to your great videos, cheers keep them coming 🙏👍👍. What paint and sealer do you use , and what size chisels do you recommend to learn .👍

Hi James, Thank you for the lovely comments, 😊😊 I would definitely start with a 4mm 6mm chisel, they can be used on a good mix of size letters. The paint all depends on the stone type but mainly I would use a water based black, stone seal would be a Tompston’s stone seal I would use 90% of the time but again all depends on the stone I have some new videos coming very soon one about the chisels I use that you could be interested in

Brilliant! Does that little round hammer work better than other large headed mallets?

I have lots of hammers but when carving letters I am in the habit of always picking up this 600g dummy hammer 🔨 But to answer your question there are different weights and shaped hammers for each job but it really comes down personal preference

You are not wrong, if I needed to grind some garam masala I would reach for the dummy hammer but there is a tool for every job and one thing I have it’s a lot of is hammers. At times think I have a problem buying hammers
