This video offers a step by step explanation on how I developed and created this short 2D Classical animation by looking at each key stage of the Production Pipeline.
Software I used to create this animation was the 'Rough Animator ' app for animating, Krita for cleaning scanned image and After Effects for Compositing.
Backgrounds were created using Windsor and Newton Professional Water colours and Langton Smooth Water colour paper.

Main Software used to perform Line Tests and eventually colour and clean the animation

Hi! Glad I found you! I landed here from watching other animation videos on *Rough* *Animator* which I was beginning to assume I didn't really need to bring my *KRITA* into the Workflow until the very very end if at all. Happy to see I can actually get started "early" on an anime sequence idea from even my cell phone while eating a *Happy* *Meal* at you know who.

That was flipping great! Just what I have been looking for..I luv traditional animation and the magic of drawing in paper. I think you could have done so that in krita (the best for me) but still you choose paper..... Why? Carry on, please! This is moreish!

Thanks Adagi, your kind words are much appreciated :) I will be honest I would of really wanted to use Krita for the animation, it really is a great bit of kit but after experimenting with animating in it, I found myself having a few technical issues. My main issue was that Krita (very much like Clip Paint and Photoshop) are traditionally just drawing packages that have incorporated the ability of animating within them. The problem with this is that in all cases they dont seem to handle sound very well. In the case of Krita, I have found that audio scrubbing can be problomatic depending upon which version of krita you are using and also what device you are using it on. As this video was aimed at giving others the setup to create there own animations, I wanted to use a tool that would allow them to do so fully and with very little complications, which is why I chose 'Rough Animator'. Its simple, its not free but so cheap it might as well be, and provides everything an animator needs to make 2D animations. It will work on any platform (Windows/ Mac) as well as tablets and mobile devices. Additionally Rough Animator works with Flash/ Toonboom and After Effects and you can rough out the work in 'Rough Animator' and then import the file into Flash/ Toonboom/ After Effects and take to finish. But as I mentioned there are various ways of traditional and digital animating and those who have adabpted Krita to do so, well done!. Great package with some amazing brushes and offers brilliant adjustment effects (the remove white to Alpha feature is literally the best I have seen in any software) All the best Adagi and thanks for saying hello :)

Why no one use OpenToonz for cleaning and coloring? It has many good tools for animation + it's free and open source. I follow a lot of animators from amatory to professional. They use TvPaint, Clip Studio, Photoshop or Krita. Why they don't using OpenToonz?
@MarkDaviesArt
@MarkDaviesArt Год назад
A really interesting question and one I can’t really answer as I don’t know enough of the software but let’s give it a go. In preparation for this video I made, I did test openToonz and straight off the cuff it does have a lot to offer. Either tradigital or traditional, the software does allow you to make animations fully in the software. For traditional animation It also offers line testing capabilities, testing scenes by photographing frames directly in the software which you don’t see much in other software. The main reason for not using open toonz for this video was I do find its UI and userbility to not be very intuitive. I feel the software requires a steep learning curve and I wanted something simpler for my fellow viewers but which provides great results so they could get straight into animation without dedicating themselves to learning a new software. Probably why you see lots of people using other software like photoshop, clip paint etc, it’s because these software are kind of familiar in function/ shortcut keys and actions. So if you know how to use photoshop, you probably will almost know how to use clip paint/ Krita/ after effects/ flash without much research into how to use the software, they are very intuitive programmes. Additionally to my knowledge, there are very little 2D animation productions that use opentoons. I understand that in the Asian market this may be different (I know of the studio ghibli link with the software), but in the western market, 2D animation productions are generally made with Toonboom, TVP, Adobe animate, After effects, Cel action and of recent Moho. Therefore if you needed to devote time and effort into fully learning a software to animate with, it would be better advised to learn something that is more industry standard so have more chance of employment. That being said I am personally very interested to see what can be done with openToonz and if I get some free time, I would like to take a deep dive and see what I can do with it.

Hey Mark, you scanned the images into the system, so why did you take pictures by your phone? and what camera quality should my phone have to take these pictures?
@MarkDaviesArt
@MarkDaviesArt 2 года назад
When I am taking pictures in my phone, it’s in order to perform a line test. To see if the intended animation works. It’s a way of quickly getting rough captures of your drawings into your computer to test them out. Once the inked animation has been line tested and is at a stage to colour, THEN I scan them into the computer. As this is when I need high quality images to work with. Scanning images takes a bit of time to perform and that’s why I do not scan images when doing a line test. It is too time consuming for test purposes. Regarding camera quality, doesn’t really matter to be honest, remember these tests are for your use only (not the viewer), so on that basis as long as the camera you have captures the images with enough detail to be able to see the image you have drawn then your ok. I used my phone camera for this example but years ago I was using a really cheap old webcam and it still did the job. When scanning images I usually scan them at a ratio of 144dpi, you only need 72dpi when working with items for TV but I find by I Italy scanning your drawings at double the resolution it gets a bit more detail in each image. Hope all this helps :)

Hey 😊 how did you do for adding shadows? :)
@MarkDaviesArt
@MarkDaviesArt 2 года назад
Do you mean the shadows on the floor? Quite simple really. When compositing the scene in after effects (or Hit film if you use that) duplicate the layer that is of the character, then add a hue adjustment effect to the layer and push the brightness all the way down to dark so it’s black. Adjust the vertical scale of this layer and it’s positioning so it looks like a shadow on the floor, Then set the opacity of the layer to around 50% so you can see through it. Done!

Had a look at both of the videos you made. I am blown away you made them with MSPaint. Didn’t even know that was possible. I am loving your approach to the story telling within your films. I think using MS Paint is actually giving your films quite a nice and unique feel to them. Your use of sounds is great too, that distorted sound provides something that is both light hearted and creepy at the same time. Really interesting. I have subbed and I am looking forward to seeing what you make next, well done bud!
