I grew up in Suffolk (UK) and in all older cottages these latches were common place. Took a few minutes (75 years old) to get the brain into gear to see what you were making, then I remembered how they worked. Nice piece of work. The rest of the latch will show the rest of the world how it all works!!!

I don't think I have ever seen such a clean work area!

I’ve been saying the same thing to Glen for a few years now. It’s like a blacksmiths hospital Operating Room.
@chilipepperjackcowboyactio9947
@@gaz0463 LOL it is CRAZY! I don't know how he gets any work finished between the cleaning.

Yes, others have also told me this. I'm usually neat but I have to be extra organized given my small work space. Thanks.

Your comment really cracked me up! Good stuff.

One thing I dislike is having to clean up after each day or forging, especially when I'm tired, but it's got to get done. But I get a little forging done between cleanings! Thanks.

I'm partial to old style hardware, but I am also a tough constructive critic. I have no complaints. Once again Glen, working on the fly suits your obvious skill set. Much satisfaction is gained. Thanks for sharing, learning with you.

Relaxes me to see you work Glen.....your organization and flow of work is very satisfying to the soul of blacksmithing. You make it look so easy..the sign of a true craftsman..Thanks for sharing !....did I mention flawless style? A man in his office chair working at his desk molding and forming.....I need this setup....someday.

Very, very nice comment. It may look easy at times, but it's always a challenge for me. Thanks for taking the time to write this - makes me feel good. Now I need to get back to my office chair!

I am sincere to.....I would like to see more tradesmanship in todays education of our young people....we dont want this type of craftsmanship to be lost and forgotten to the ages.....I would hope some of your viewers are younger aspiring and are enjoying your skills......I am now relearning them myself...... "as the Phoenix Rises above the flames.....is even more beuatiful than before" ! :)

You always make it look so easy and I know that’s much more difficult to do than it looks. Especially to make it look that neat.

I remember studying the local curves while designing the fireplace tool set my grade 9 math teacher had requested way back in 76. One of the benefits I loved going to a small town school, you could leave with plenty of useful memories in exchange for a little extra work. I see a very pleasing organic connection to the shape you coaxed it into becoming and I guess you could say, worth mentioning. Peace.

I am impressed by the absence of tentative or unnecessary hammer strikes. There is thought before each action you take. In contrast, I feel the need to hit something while I am deciding what to do next.
@gstongs
@gstongs 5 лет назад
I know exactly what you mean, previously having the habit of striking without carefully observing. But I built up the better habit of tapping my anvil gently with my hammer between strikes, mainly when I need an extra second or two to decide. The tapping helps maintain a rhythm without unnecessarily striking the workpiece. Thanks for watching.

I absolutely love the latch and you did a wonderful job forging it. The question I have is, wouldn't instead of balancing it, having it slightly back heavy, help it to fall into the keeper on the other side of the door easier? I feel like maybe it would float in the door with it perfectly balanced.

I am very curious as to the type of anvil you are using. The large face that you seem to be using most of the time seems to be moving separately from the rest of the anvil. Does it have some kind of isolation. - Curious

I noticed in the beginning when you first put your bar in the guillotine you rotated it after a few wax is that just to even out the work or is there more energy/work going in the top die of the guillotine? Great video
@gstongs
@gstongs 5 лет назад
Good observation. My main reason is to even things out. I have a tendency to hold workpieces tilted low and so I like to do this "from both sides" technique. Glad you like this one. Thanks.

Great job. All the things you do is superb I’d like to ask you a question about your anvils. What kind of steel are they made?
@gstongs
@gstongs 5 лет назад
My small block style anvils are all made from 4145 steel. I've found this to be very suitable. Seems to further harden with use (work harden). Thanks.

How easy (or difficult) is it to find suitable steel for your projects? Can you buy it locally or do you have to order it? If you order is it from a local supplier or is it online? Thanks for posting your projects.
@gstongs
@gstongs 5 лет назад
Here where i live in Taiwan, it's very easy to get the steel I need. There are a few local suppliers and if they don;t have what you want, they can get it. They cut everything to size for free and have no problem with small purchase amounts. Thanks for watching.

Interesting, but biased. I read the full article. The 500 year cycle is only observed in China's Monglian autonomous region. It is effected nt el nino. The article stated the cooling cycle in that area may, MAY, have a moderating effect on glibal warming. Nowhere does it say the cooling cycle will cause global cooling. The article, instead, said we should avoid complacency and the belief that we can control climate change. May I suggest you stoo cherry picking data to prove your preconceived ideas. This helps nobody.
