Hand Lettering: The "Crilley Method" 

That's some awesome information! Just curious, when and where did you start learning about it? And do you have any books about it?

@@getoulover I started studying graphic design 3 years ago (with terrible typography teachers). I mostly taught myself via books and an internship in letterpress printing, I started to design my own fonts then. Mostly I know books about typography in general. But as far as typedesign goes, I have some suggestions: - Beier, Sofie (2017): _Type Tricks. Your personal Guide to Type Design._ This is the tiny cute book that sort of demystified Type Design for me. (I originally thought I bought a book about typography in general). It makes Type Design seem doable, and it gives you an idea of where to start. - Cheng, Karen (2005): _Designing Type._ I include this to give more detail. This book has a page for pretty much every single letter in capital and lowercase, serif and sans serif, as well as punctuation, numerals and accents. Extremely detailed, and several visual examples for each point that is made. - letterpunch.blogspot.com/p/glyph-tutorials.html This too goes into each letter and punctuation, but sadly the pictures of the blog are all gone. The text is still useful, I hope. Theres are also two books about typography in general, which I would recommend, because things like which character to use, what space to put between letters, and a historical context is as important as the letterforms themselves. - Williams, Jim (2011): _Type Matters!_ Certainly the best book to get into typography in my opinion. It covers the basics and presents it very visually and simplified. - Lupton, Ellen (2004): _ Thinking With Type._ A bit more in depth, and it adds a historical context, as well as a more classic graphic design context with grids for example. That being said, I suppose most of those books are primarily in a graphic design or font production context, so sort of ... "peripheral literature" to hand lettering. I hope they are still helpful. In any case, have fun hand lettering.

This is probably the most intriguing comment I have ever read on RU-vid. Thank you for sharing some knowledge on the subject with us! I find it weird that we use letters every day yet know so little about types and fonts.

@@mysteriouswolven I am glad you find this subject interesting. As a typography nerd, you rarely get to nerd out about this stuff. It's like "Oh so you make fonts... so... why do we need that?" But what you said is true, about letters being omnipresent. As I got into all this stuff I started to notice a lot of things I technically "saw" all my life. Small example: *fl ffl fi ffi* For those combinations there can be special characters, "Ligatures". The letters sort of melt into each other to be easier readable, as the top of f is often in the way of l or the dot of the i. The dot of the i is actually entirely gone in the ligature. This font has ligatures, some others don't need them.
