Hand Made Fishing Lures, Adding a Tail to Your Lures

Lots of lure makers are adding bristle tails to their lures and I've done it on some of my custom lures. The process can be a bit of a hassle trying to keep the bristles from going all over the place and especially trying to form a nice fan-tail shape. I stumbled across a method of getting a nice fan-tail shape without getting ugly crisscrossing bristles. In this video I show you how I do it and retrofit some tails to some finished lures.

Isn’t it an engineer’s job, to overthink and overbuild everything? I mean we owe our personal safety to this very fact. I cannot imagine anyone being critical of ideas. That is why we continually upgrade, and improve our work ethics. Good on ya, Franco. Warm regards, Cam.

Awesome use for a solder acid brush. Just a thought, I make several kinds of baits and teasers and use a fiber called crimped nylon. Comes in a variety of colors and I’m sure with a simple jig, fantastic and colorful tails could be made

I would also like to see the before and after action on these. My experience has been tails, especially fixed or rigid as opposed to hinged, really kills the action.

@@EngineeredAngler I've put together a camper.... at stores all I see is camper parts, in all departments. I built a boat.... Suddenly all I see is boat parts.....Of course everything always comes out like Rube Goldberg, or steam punk, but there's more fun in that than the actual product you make sometimes.

Your advice has been useful before. How would you clear coat a lure with multiple joints without getting epoxy in the joints?
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 4 года назад
If you can do the enitail couple coats before you assemble then one or two coats after assembly that's really the best way. Otherwise you just have to be really careful. Best of luck
@whutzzzup
@whutzzzup 4 года назад
could try to do the same with bucktail hair
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 4 года назад
I think so... the trick is the adhesive ball at the end of the hairs. You would have to glue a clump together. Then you could pinch the glue and presto...you have a fan.

Hi - do the brush / hair tails perform better?
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 4 года назад
I like them because they have less drag and behave a little more naturally when the lure is paused.
@jparryprodeal

@EngineeredAngler 3 года назад

@samiylinen9270
@samiylinen9270 4 года назад
I have tried making similar tails to my lures, but they seem to kill the action pretty much completely.
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 4 года назад
You're absolutely right. And it's been my argument that designing in fins should be done very thoughtfully. You should know what that fin is doing to the action of your lure and make sure that that is what you want. You'll notice most all my lures are finless and tailless. But on occasion the action of the lure combined with a fin is what I want.
@samiylinen9270
@samiylinen9270 4 года назад
@@EngineeredAngler thanks for the response! For top water baits its sometimes useful to use a fin or a some kind of fly-treble to create drag and slow the bait down. Keep the videos coming, love to learn more about creating my own baits!
@paulwyman2299
@paulwyman2299 4 года назад
What would happen if you placed the tail horizontal instead of vertical. I would think horizontal the tail would slice through the water as of vertical Fanning the water...just a thought.
