Hand sewing leather - knife sheath making - How to hand sew knife sheaths leatherworking tutorial. The art of hand sewing leather.
I am making a custom made leather knife sheath and to top it off I am going to hand sew the knife sheath together using nylon lacing tape that has a heavy wax coating on it to protect it from the elements. I do use a rag or a cloth to rub some of the excess wax off of the nylon thread to give it a little better feel and so the wax will not build up when I pull the thread through the pre punched hole in my knife sheath. #sheathmaking
I like and use harness needles made by C. S. Osborne and Company in Harrison New Jersey. The size I am using for sewing this handmade knife sheath is the 0 size and can be purchased from any C.S. Osborne dealer or may be purchased direct from the company. I am not sure but they might have a minimum contact C.S. Osborne Industrial, Hand and leather Tools at csosborne.com
The leather awl and haft are also made by Osborne and the awl haft is number 145 and the awl length is around 2 1/4" to 2 1/2" it is a good idea to have a variety of saddlers awls in various lengths for differing thicknesses of leather that you will be hand sewing.
The device I use for clamping the knife sheath into is called a stitch horse that is what we have called it a far back as I can remember. A couple other names for this is a stitching pony and a saddlers clamp what ever you want to call it is fine with me. I suppose you can make your own clamp by lining the jaws of a 4" to 5" shop vise and that will serve the purpose for you.
I also use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull my harness needles through the thick leather to prevent fatigue in my hands.
Once the leather knife sheath is hand sewn I go over to my granite rock and lightly tap down the stitches with my USM size D cobblers hammer to help close up the holes and give the sheath a slightly more finished look.

That is really nice work! Your stitching horse is very nicely made. I think that you said in another video that your dad or grandfather made it?

What size diamond blade did you use in your awl for the stiches. I enjoy your video a great deal and am just getting back into leather working and making some knife sheaths. Thanks

El señor Cheaney es un artisano de verdad. En veces es dificil escucharlo, pero la verdad si sería una ayuda si hubiera una traduccion. He aprendido mucho de Él.

I don't like the angle the produce.

If I seen correctly, you did not present punch any holes before stitching ???

Bruce, does the twist you put in your loop add strength to the stitches? Also, what method did you choose to make the initial stitching holes?
@cheaneysaddles
@cheaneysaddles 8 лет назад
Samuel, I think putting a twist on the thread right before I pull the stitch tight does ad strength to the stitches as well as makes the stitch look more pleasing. I use a diamond shaped awl to punch my stitching hole I like to punch them straight and not at an angle. Bruce
