Brad, Just a word of caution .. you use the power sanders without any sort of mask protection. Leather does not dissolve in the lungs. Remember coal miners and black lung 'disease' from coal dust in their work environment and you get the idea. Leather dust from what I've researched can be very fine and hard to detect. Get a good mask with filter cans on the side. You can open the cans from time to time and see how much gunk they saved you from. This would also apply if you are hand sanding. It's a pain, but you are young and have a lot of leather crafting potential ahead ... Short term hobbyists [including retirees like myself] don't have to worry too much ... but even then ... a covid mask is better than nothing.
@dtom1642
@dtom1642 9 месяцев назад
I second this. I’m a wood carver. For a long time I was an “ehhh I’ll be fine” type of person when it came to sanding and not wearing masks. My lungs are fine, I think, but not wearing a mask absolutely annihilated my sinuses. It’s a slow progression so you don’t really notice it for a while at first but eventually it’ll get to the point where bloody noses are a regular occurrence and you get sinus infections anytime there is the slightest irritation to the sinuses. Allergies? Sinus infection. Cold? Sinus infection. Tiny bit a dust breathed in while cleaning? Sinus infection. Not fun.

Amazing video! Thank you for sharing it! You are the first one I’ve seen who’s actually used epoxy to protect the threads as well as leave a drain port at the bottom. Right on for thinking of that. Maybe other folks do as well but I personally saw you do it here. And thank you for the easy music. My aging ears can’t do a whole lot of heavy music anymore. Lol. Stay young as long as you can. May your talents and your creativity take you far. God bless

This is one of the best sheath tutorials I have ever seen! Your love for the craft outshines this sissy amazing work. The only question I have unanswered is: "How do you estimate how much thread you 'll need for stitching?" Other than this, the tutorial and sheath are pure perfection!

Well done and quite informative. You'll find it much easier to glue the sheath together then drill out your stitching holes. A stitching horse will hold the leather while you stitch. Easy enough to make one.

Can anyone recommend some leather work (never done anything like this before, and I also cant use super many tools and probably will have to rely on handwork without power tools) I would be able to craft while I am backpacking? A leather sheath like this seems doable, but I doubt Ill find many customers for that. Im open for suggestions :)

Great tutorial here, well done man! Unfortunately I could not get all the way through it though, because that beat was driving me insane! Don't get me wrong, I dig the beat, but after hearing it hundreds of times, again and again, while trying to focus on what you were doing and saying, I just had to shut it off. I barley made it through the first part due to this beat, but felt hopeful once it changed. When it came back in though, I was done for. I think your tutorial is engaging and well done enough that the music distracts from your teaching, or maybe that's just my ADD and neurosis. Either way, not hating, hopefully you can take it as constructive criticism.

I would much rather see the smooth side of the belt loop on the outside rather than the rough side out, just saying. Other than that nice job for your first time.
@davidcoats1037

If the smooth side of the belt loop is on the outside then the entire rest of the sheath will be rough side out. Just sayin’.
@observer7418
@observer7418 5 лет назад
@@davidcoats1037 Unless made separately. I get that having the rough side inward will add resistance from slipping around the belt but a sized fit would do better.

before applying the wax you should have warmed the leather with a hair dryer, heat gun being to harsh, then apply the wax so it soaks in, then heat again, & buff up once cooled again. much better penetration of the wax that way.

Dennis Hudson buckskin can absolutely work! I prefer cow shoulder or something closer to an 8/9oz leather. Buckskin can vary but I most often see it closer to 5oz. You may also consider using a kydex if sorts and wrapping it in thinner leather after it’s molded.

Your order of process kind of made more work for your self. Easier if you stitch on the loop.(BTW it’s called an English Point end) Then dye it all, glue in the welt glue in the other side. Then clean the edge and square up. Then mark and drill your stitching. After stitching do your edge bevel. It turned out nice and looked good. Also just put some grooves in your dowel and it would work great. Also probably less water for burnishing,it doesn’t take much.
