I have loved Handel’s Dixit Dominus since first hearing it in Winchester Cathedral in 1986, and have heard many different performances of it since then, but not ever anything like this! The intensity, sheer beauty and perfection are almost beyond belief. Sir John Eliot Gardiner, orchestra, soloists, choir - one cannot begin to imagine the work that must have gone into making this come to life in such a perfect and beautiful form. Thank you with all my heart.
Oudtshoornify, your words in review capture the essence of this unique performance. I could not agree with you more! Thanks for articulating what others beyond ourselves must feel though the experience. DJ in Knoxville TN
No, I have not heard that performance. You can not not appreciate any performance which is conducted by JEG's baton. His performances are consistently of the highest standard, and that is what he expects of each singer and instrumentalist. The whole experience is one of delight to the spirit.
Gardiner and the Monteverdi and Baroque soloists! Just stunning. To think Handel was only 22 when he wrote this. It,s amazing to sing it. A new revelation in every section. Such attack, accuracy and vigour here. Thank you all.
This work is Amazing. I can't imagine myself at 21 composing such a masterpiece. Handel was a genius from a young age. Very admirable, since his family was upper class and they did not want him to be a musician, but a lawyer... but he was born to be a musician, he traveled through Europe studying different musical styles, many times he helped the poor through his concerts and died with honors. Now we can all enjoy these wonderful works. Thanks Handel 🙌🏻
What an incredible performance. Gardiner takes Handel’ S music and these wonderful singers and musicians to a higher plane and also transports our musical appreciation and understanding. I sang this twenty years ago and wish I could do it again!
It is indeed incredible, Sally! By the way, I kindly recommend the appreciation of the work of a living classical composer dedicated mostly to sacred music: W. Ferdinand. I feel myself like a sort of non-official ambassador for his music - and, effectively, also one of his few supporters. He is very, very talented. You won't be disappointed. ru-vid.com
I know how you feel! I played in 2 high school orchestras and went to music camp in high school. I felt so engaged in what I was doing and loved practicing and playing with my school mates. Such a great experience!!!

It's not only the beauty of the music and the enthutiastic rendering by Maestro Gardiner and his Monteverdi choir, but unlike too many groups these days, they are a pleasure to look at, clean, refined, poised, as in: "civilized'. What a joy to the eye and ear!
I love how dramatic, harmonically complex, contrapuntal and exuberant this work is. Händel brought choral music to the top in 1706 as a young man of 21 years old. In my opinion, no one could have done it better than him.
@@lorebern6538 Vivaldi’s music was wonderful, always full of life, however he was not overall as fine as Handel. “G.F. Handel, the master of us all”. W.A. Mozart.
@@lorebern6538 The great thing about Handel is his musical genius He used the musical forms from the rest of Europe to make a voice that was all his own , vocal and instrumental which had never been heard before This performance is a wonderful example of how his music transcended all others except Bach.
Ridiculous to compare Vivaldi and Handel. Both of them are perfect in their own way, but it is like comparing apples and oranges. Completely different. Some of us happen to like one more than the other.
Magistral !
Music from the Kingdom of Heaven ou quelquechose
RU-vid continues to be a treasure trove of works and performances. I discover this performance this morning and I am transfixed. A completely enthralling work by conductor, choir, orchestra and soloists. In an incomparable setting. Just simply beautiful. Thank you all - thank you. 🙏🏻
@@davidedwards1885 Without needing to be a Latin scholar, this is the Latin for the 3rd word in the English translation of Psalm 110, which begins "The LORD said unto my Lord, come sit at my right hand..." In the Latin text, it begins with the verb.
I loved this piece from the first time I heard it as a young man, and insisted on conducting it with the Keele Bach Choir. This interpretation captures brilliantly the youthful exuberance and vitality of Handel's writing> Gardner brings much innovation to a performance which is both virtuosic and utterly committed. We are lucky indeed to have this performance for posterity.
Absolutely agree, John! By the way, I kindly recommend the appreciation of the work of a living classical composer dedicated mostly to sacred music: W. Ferdinand. Yes I think it is indeed youthful exuberance! Like Handel is saying, "look what I can do!" When I first heard this work (and luckily it was this performance), I was stunned at its intensity, drama, and emotional range- it is a perfect example of the Baroque style at its most spectacular. I can never understand those who think Baroque music is just mathematical and mechanical. It must be thrilling (and hair-raising) to conduct, you are so fortunate!
I think this work is the hardest to sing ever...so much counterpoint, fugal choruses and high notes. I read that Handel was 22 when he composed it 😱.. a really young Genius!!!

I just performed this piece and I know why lol. It’s pretty difficult and at 440 (modern tuning) very high for the soprano section at least HOLY TOLEDO 🥴 After my initial discomfort with the thing though, it was A LOT OF FUN!!!
Could Heaven be any better than this?! No wonder Beethoven said that Handel was the father of us all! This must be right at the acme of Western Civilization. No other civ has come close to this, and the West itself seems now spent. What a marvelous, fabulous performance of this amazing opus! Mr. Gardiner seemed to have such an encouraging and collegial attitude. One that says 'we are all in this together,' rather than acting as if he wrote the music and is the master and is prying it out of the singers and musicians. This is such a treasure. Altissime grazie to all the performers in this momentous accomplishment.
John Elliot Gardiner You have brought this piece to new heights. I was transported to a place of sheer beauty. Words are pale in trying to convey the emotional pathos and energy you gave to your players/singers and what you yourself poured out.
I had never heard Dixit Dominus before last month. It's a wonder like I've never heard. Now I need my daily dose... I love each of the choir and orchestra members. I admire J. E. Gardiner, I'm very moved to see the way he conducts the singers and the musicians. Thanks a lot Cantus 5 for posting. Merci beaucoup :-)

He went to Italy at age 22 to show the Italians that he can compose in their style with this one. I don't think there was any doubt afterwards about his abilities thereafter.
@@opus4rv Handel learned it all from the Italians. Do you know of Italians going to Germany to learn music? Haendel is a second-hand product. Leo Depuydt (Brown University)
@@leodepuydt308 I don't think it is right to say that händel is a second hand product. Yes, he used the Italian style and not the German, but he did it brilliantly (I don't refer ro some copies from other's), and he also used some German themes in some of his works.
@@leodepuydt308 Maybe your description is a little rough and impolite to Haendel, but indeed Italy still was the cultural capital of the world at the time and their truths the most recognized. Even in our days, the names of the notes, the tempo indications and other elements in music, are Italian or latin.

This is a gorgeous performance. My choir was scheduled to perform this on March 15, 2020, and we cancelled the concert two days prior because of Covid. It's wonderful to listen to it now and pretend it hasn't been a year since I've been able to sing with my choir.
I hope you guys get to perform!! I have great admiration for people who have developed musical skills to the point of performing in symphonies. My terminology might be off, but I just love baroque music.

Esecuzione magnifica!
Our choir were due to sing this wonderful yet challenging composition this evening but due to the Coronavirus and Govt lockdown our performance like so many public events has been Postponed...we are determined however to" master" it and present it to our local community...this wonderful recording has helped me at least in keeping in touch with the music whilst we isolate.
The Rotterdam Philharmonic teamed up with a Dutch healthcare provider to film the finale of Beethoven’s 9th with all the musicians playing their parts by video from their homes.
The energy and sheer joy of the lead singers that was wholly shared and supported by the entire choir was electric and the sparkling performance of the entire orchestra, all combined here to make a magical musical moment for everyone present. It remains great for us now to hear, but must have been incredible for those privileged to witness. All thanks to John Elliot Gardiner
@@ericvanjames8395 Congratulations. You made a very wonderful choice. What is amazing in Handel, in my opinion, is the fact that he didn’t came from a music family, like Mozart or Beethoven. He had to fight with his father to study music! When I think about this time - barroco time- and see what we’re living nowadays, I fell myself sadness….
Vraiment.
This is my favorite Handel work, and this could well be my favorite performance despite a little bit of ropey singing from the soloists. I always think about how Handel wrote this at age 21, and I hear his youthful passion driving every note of this fiery and dramatic masterpiece. I once had a teacher who gave the opinion that the music of the Baroque era was mechanical and unemotional, "like mathematics". You hear people say this quite a bit, which mystifies me. Baroque music is overflowing with passion and drama, even grandiosity. Is it an inability to connect emotionally in that person, or is it just a lack of understanding and experience in listening, I wonder...? April 14, 2022: I'm listening to this again, I've lost track how many times. I can't stay away for long. Apart from the magnificent performance, I love how the audience goes approximately wild with appreciation!
This is one of the few Handel works that I like wholeheartedly, because it is uncompromising. It seems that later in his career Handel wanted to give the public more accessible music. The idea that Baroque music is passionless is a myth. Bach, for example, was strongly influenced by Pietism, and it shows in the passions and cantatas. And then there's Louis Couperin, Buxtehude, and others, whose music is intensely emotional.
+David Roddis ' W O W ' ! DAVID ; I'M VERY IMPRESSED WITH YOUR POST ! YES THERE CERTAINLY IS PASSION AND DRAMA AND MUCH LOVE EXPRESSED IN ' BAROCOCO ' (THIS WORD COINED BY ' DE KOVEN ') MUSIC ! MY SECOND MUSIC IMPRESARIO AND TEACHER , ' GRAND MASTER ' " DE KOVEN " CONDUCTED HIS CLASSES ON ONE HOUR RADIO BROADCASTS EVERY WEEK (SUNDAYS) , FROM 1958 OR 1959 UNTIL HIS DEATH IN THE 1980'S . I WAS WITH HIM EACH AND EVERY WEEK FOR ABOUT 15 YEARS , LISTENING , ENJOYING , LOVING , AND MOST OF ALL I WAS ' LEARNING ' ABOUT AND DISCOVERING THE FOUNDATIONS OF THIS MUSIC THAT HAVE REFLECTED ON THROUGH TO THE MUSIC THROUGHOUT TIME UP UNTIL THE PRESENT DAY . DE KOVEN'S RADIO PROGRAM WAS APPROPRIATELY TITLED ' THE DE KOVEN CONCERTS ' AS HE WOULD TAKE A COMPOSER LIKE MOZART OR SCHUBERT AND USING HIS VAST RECORD ARCHIVES COMPARE ARRANGEMENTS AND EVEN CONDUCTORS VERSIONS OF THE SAME MUSICAL PIECE , OF COURSE TELLING US WHY ONE WAS MORE DEFINITIVE THAN THE OTHER . UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS ONLY ONE SHORT AIR CHECK OF HIS RADIO PROGRAM ON YOU TUBE @ OF WHICH I'VE INCLUDED IT ONE OF MY MANY YOU TUBE PLAYLISTS THAT I DEDICATED SPECIALLY , TO THI S'WONDERFUL MAN @ I'M INCLUDING THIS PIECE BY HANDEL ON THERE ALTHOUGH , I BELIEVE HIS BEST WORK WAS ' THE DETTINGTEN TE DEUM ' WHICH DE KOVEN USED AS HIS OPENING AND CLOSING RADIO THEAM THROUGHOUT ALL THE YEARS . WHICH MEANS ' DE KOVEN ' GAVE IT HIS HIGHEST RATING ' SUPER DUPER O.T.U. ' = (OUT OF THIS UNIVERSE)
+David Roddis Which soloists are "ropey"? Bass, tenor, two sopranos, alto? I don't find blanket condemnations useful sans specifics. Do you mean the soloists Gardiner asked to encore their duet. perhaps? If so, your expert criticism of their singing would surely be enlightening.
I agree, the soloists are a tad ropey - the chorus sounds amazing though. Masterpiece of a work. We performed this a few years ago, still my favourite today, even after performing many other works.

Outstanding music composed by one great compositor. The Handel music has an harmony surpassing. The voices are superb and the orchestration fantastic. The interpretation is very sensitive coming from the bottom of the soul of those who sing like that. Congratulations to the Monteverdi choir and English Soloists you are honestly amazing.
Yes! I feel the same way about the finale! Particularly the way Handel sustains and spins out the fugue to what feels like an unprecedented length is thrilling. Even the subject of the fugue gets your blood racing as its rhythm on those first repeated notes accelerates, as though creating then concentrating the energy to move forward. And ending firmly in the minor enhances the drama of the entire work. You sense he was showing off his skills in a feat of virtuosity. A master at twenty-one! And it already "sounds like Handel". I want it never to end...
This has to be the very best, liveliest, most interesting recording of Dixit Dominus I have heard. Forget any negative thoughts you have in one of those movements, enjoy the fun the musicians are actually having. Fantastic! InSPIRITional!
Big challenge to me... Listening to this astonishing masterpiece and not crying. There you go... Big man weeping like a baby. It just turns everyone into sugar.
James Carlton: It was actually written in Italy, before he settled in England. Maybe you are thinking of the Coronation Anthems. Otherwise, you are absolutely correct.
This performance is utterly engaging. Everyone fully present. Energy fantastic . Thanks for the subtitles. My Deutsch is better than my Latin. A joy to watch as well as to listen to. Gardiner is a wonderful conduit for Händel.

I stumbled upon this and felt the same way. I couldn’t turn it off! The intricacies of the music are phenomenal and to see these young people perform at such a high level! Wow fantastic!
Wonderful, amazing, sublime. This is my current favorite of Handel's works. Since I discovered this video I have watched it over and over again. I especially like the blonde alto soloist (interesting that she's singing the second soprano part in the choir). Her voice is so pretty, and I love her tone.
@@DwanGarcez Mackerras version, although very adequate, is a totally different concept. No period instruments, no HIP, different numbers of instruments and singers, something that dictates for a bit slower tempi. Mackerras is an excellent conductor and he knows all these parameters.
