This is a really great point! I feel that limitations are an often overlooked aspect for creativity overall. This is why we create rules for sports. Performing athletic feats without breaking the rule system requires teamwork and creativity. Same with fine arts. You can create amazing colors and blending with water color painting but the thin viscosity of the paint means that precise realism is impossible. Yet the 'watercolor' aesthetic of blended/layered colors with blurry visuals creates a wistful emotion like looking back into previous memories. Thus, the inability to create perfect realism becomes the whole point of the watercolor medium. Limitations inspire people to surpass what is considered possible. It encourages people to look at problems from every angle and produces original solutions. Without limits, people hardly even know where to start. With infinite possibility, humans seem to struggle to conceptualize something that resembles a polished end product. In the end, we often impose our own limitations to help guide us. I would also like to counter your argument with some current options you may have overlooked. I think your point holds true for many games from triple A game devs like Microsoft and Sony as well as Nintendo although to a lesser extent. However, many Indie developers have gone to great lengths to create amazing games which aesthetically resemble games from the GBA/SNES/DS era. Some of them are even creating original GBA/GBC games that can be played on original hardware today! Furthermore, there is a huge modding scene in todays era. Consider the thousands of pokemon rom hacks which innovate and expand on the established handheld games. Many individuals have done the same with Zelda, Mario, and Metroid games as well. People who feel as you do are creating new experiences that can be enjoyed in today's era. Food for thought. It may not be lucrative enough to entice triple A game devs but many individuals are passionate enough about that era of gaming that they are spending their own time creating original experiences within these retro handheld digital environments.
Of course i agree! I’m a big fan of indie games an Nintendo and they are keeping that alive. But just saying casually handheld has change ! U do agreee indie games mods and Nintendo keeping it alive and that’s why they my favorites
Which is why I’m a big advocate for indie games and why i get happy seeing Nintendo bring back 3ds series . We still won’t see that separate era of gaming again
I agree! I’m sad that it was just past my era. 3ds is probably the most memorable for me cuz I was finally old enough to buy my own games. I wish I’d tried more titles for it back then tho. I’m playing it much more now after modding my system lol still a blast to play and love the form factor.
I think my favorite handheld console was the DS. I know I grew up with the gameboy advance but the DS probably has the most of my time played. Recently I've been nostalgic about the DS with my 3DS so mine is modded now. Haven't gotten to play anything yet since I haven't had any patience to take the time to play something slower. I have missed street pass on the DS also, honestly it had been so long since I touched my DS that I completely forgot it existed when I started using it again.
I grew up playing the Gameboy, GBC, GBA then i ventured into the psp and thats when i really got hooked onto handheld gaming. The last handheld that i had before the switch came was ps vita. Its a shame Sony gave up on Ps Vita tho. PS Vita was ahead of its time
This exact thing has been running through my mind lately. Limitation breeds innovation and lot of the time, and I don’t think we will see a game like the phantom hourglass’s and brain age’s if the world quiet like they were back then.
I personally loved the handhelds growing up and I just got a steam deck since I have been buying Miyoo Mini's and Anbernic devices for a while and now I think I am going to start selling those just because I can do all of that on the steam deck plus play some of my crazy looking games on there. Don't get me wrong, there is something about grabbing a device that looks just like a gameboy color and being able to put so many games from different consoles including Nintendo DS but, it just doesn't feel the same as it did once before since not everyone knows about these devices but they all know what a steam deck is.
I feel that. I more so feel bad about the content more than the actual consoles . Also casual folks on steam deck not going to be looking to do all that but def understand that for you. I just miss the creativity that came from a neeed to be softener
the thing i miss is the battery life man the GBA sp and ds/dsi got amazing battery that last very long even to this day not to mention the portability as well. Now they focus AAA big handheld get max 2h battery life... i miss that era as well. in the 2000s every 2 years we got new handheld it was exiting now it pretty much stale and boring. over size heat machine that want to be console or pc
Even though I have Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go , I'm going to buy the Asus Rog Ally X and Ayn Odin 2 max. I am never going to let go of my PSP3000, PS VITA OLED, PSVita Slim, New 2ds XL, and 2 New 3ds XL.
I believe the Nintendo Switch is actually the best handheld ever made. It has some of the very best games that Nintendo have got. And playing these great games not only on a tv but playing the same games on handheld mode. This is what handheld was ment to do simce the beginning but they didnt have the technology to do that but today they do. And with the Nintendo Switch OLED screen its just amazing playing on such a beautiful handheld screen.
I mean i agree the switch is the best handheld ever. But i mostly just mean that its an end of an era. Handheld gaming was different due to necessity. But now that handheld gaming has progressed, we do lose a certain charm and creativity was all i was saying. I love the switch and Nintendo does handhelds best if anybody can give us new things while also giving us things of the past it will continue to eb great
