Watchmaking Vlog Episode 13
I make a tiny left handed thread screw from a threading die I made myself. This screw is to secure the crown wheel of my watch that I am making, using a ETA 6498 as a base movement. Getting to this stage was a mountain of failures, but I conquered it. Watchmaking definitely takes resilience, and I believe these are all adding up and building my resilience.
I hope you enjoyed this video. Stay tuned, a lot more to come!

Hi Dean, it is great to watch your videos, I was not aware of the Cowell Lathes, my partner is however. The lathe seems to do good work from the video I see that. We are two best friends living in the California Desert and we are too makers of micro machined parts watchmakers and it is nice to see a younger person like yourself pursuing this model. The leftie screw does look really nice and fits well. Thank you for sharing.

just stumbled on this channel...super handy ....answered a lot of my questions....But still have some. 1 - where did you get the taps? 2 - how many spots on a watch are reverse threads? 3 - do you have to sharpen all screwdrivers' tips to fit certain screws? I'm playing around with a HMT Pilot and my drivers don't fit the slots...even my .8 MM bit doesn't fit.

Nice work Dean! While you are machining the crown wheel recess again you may want to reduce the contact area on the under side of the wheel. It looks like you created clearance for the teeth but you can also make the bulk of the flat of the wheel run free. Should reduce friction. A slight undercut at the end of the thread will likely make the screw seat better as well. Threading up to a shoulder is a challenge! And finally, I'm not sure if the polishing was done before or after heat treatment but you will get way better results if you polish a really hard screw! I tried polishing mild steel a few times and it nearly drove me insane. Refinishing an old screw was so much more rewarding... Old, super hard screws from vintage watches. Try it! It's a real eye opener. All the best Karl
@DeanDK
@DeanDK 6 лет назад
Thanks Karl I will keep that in mind. You are correct, the next time I will definitely undercut the end of the screw thread! I polish with a Degussit while it is hard and after temper it's quite pleasant to polish. Although, in the future I'm going deeper into polish try to achieve the infamous "black polish" :D
@karlmansson8319
@karlmansson8319 6 лет назад
Best of luck to you! The bolt tool that you are using is better for getting a completely flat, black polished surface but a screw head polishing tool is easier and quicker to use, and provides a surcafe that is at 90 deg to the rotational axis of the screw. I refinished all the screws in a Venus 170 that way, would have taken ages in a bolt tool. Also keep in mind that the cleaning process can produce scratches after you're done. Especially if you are using an ultrasonic. The chrome plating on some baskets is harder than the steel you are cleaning. i found that out the hard way! I painted my baskets with a rubber paint and haven't had problems since.

Great progress! Love the new intro. Have you managed to get the micro scratches out of the screw top? Ive been trying to achieve a perfect polish on some watche bridges and kept getting those pesky little scratches as well (only with emery paper and diamond paste.) After this im gonna have to try the micron paper you used. :) hope to see more soon!
@DeanDK
@DeanDK 6 лет назад
Thank you. No, not for this screw. In fact the glass I used underneath the micron flim had some big scratches on it. After I finish this prototype and delve in to getting a finished product I will go deeper into screw polishing and try to achieve the black polish. So Tin block and diamond paste.

Hi Clanmondo. The steel is called silver steel or drill rod. It is a water hardening tool steel. With the powder was Boric Acid powder, I'm not sure wher eyou are located. I assume you could purchase all these on ebay?

I like your watch making videos. Are you using the A. R. Warner HSS T15 cutting tool inserts and grooving tools with A.R. Warner cutting tool holders (of perhaps a Nikcole Mini-systems tool holder for the cutoff/grooving work) or are these carbide cutters?

What sort of lapping disk did you use Dean? Chris of Clickspring uses a tin lapping plate and gets a very crisp result with very sharp screw edges. I think he uses tin oxide and diamontine?? cutting abrasive .. A question.. Where do you get micron paper? And of course, it is a pleasure to watch the work of someone who is passionate about his craft. It is most elegant.
@DeanDK
@DeanDK 6 лет назад
My apologies about the delayed reply. Thank you for your kind comments. I purchased them from cousinsuk. The 3M micron lapping film. And a local supplier called the sandpaper man in Australia. Yes, I will definitely use a tin lapping plate with diamond powder to make paste in the future. The intent of this screw wasn't a finished product, only prototype. The glass I had the film mounted to had scratches as well. I will cover this when I get closer to a finished product, hopefully sooner rather than later hehe!

Good video. There's got to be a cheaper, tooling wise, to make a watch screw. Off the top on my head, use a jewelers lathe, or dremel, a screw plate, and screw cutting file. I'm too cheap to buy a screw cutting file. I think I can take a razor blade and put fine file marks in it? I believe most watch screws are between .15 to .35 mm?
@DeanDK
@DeanDK 6 лет назад
hmmm.. I would be interest in seeing this if you can pull it off. I have never heard of a screw cutting file, as in the slotting file?. I think if you wish to make repeat parts accurately you need to make a good tool. Especially left handed thread.

@robertunderdunkterwilliger2290
For such a tiny thread I would use a die holder that is running on a shaft, so it wont pull the whole tails stock with it. Many such designs in lathe users handbooks. Great video though, love the channel! (The Whitesnake cover was awful)
@DeanDK
@DeanDK 6 лет назад
Haha I think it is a love it or hate cover! Yeah I agree with the shaft, however, I am lucky with my lathe it has a lever feed tailstock, so I lock the tailstock to the bed and it draws in the lever feed by itself after the start of the thread is formed.
@robertunderdunkterwilliger2290

Hi Dean. What is your take on Sherline equipment? I have an opportunity to buy a Sherline lathe and mill and would appreciate your opinion on the matter. Thanx!
@Andre_the_Lion
@Andre_the_Lion 6 лет назад
It looked like you didn't make any undercut under the screw head to allow for the die to finish the cut. It looks like (as I'd expect) there remains a small taper remaining right up against the bottom of the screw head. Did you find that it was a bit tight on the last turn or so of the screwdriver? Does it sit fully down in the hole you tapped? As long as the screw doesn't stick way up, I can't imagine it will matter, especially considering the crown wheel core/ring is really the only contact point under the screw head anyway. Great work, though, looks nice!
@Andre_the_Lion

+Andrew Zaborowski Thanks for your comments! Your are correct though! I thought I could get away with it but I couldnt.
