In this watchmaking vlog episode 18.
I cut the barrel bridge to size with the saw, and start to the file the shape of the bridge. The bridge is looking good, but watchmaking trouble strikes as I test the Seitz Jewel for the centre wheel in my barrel bridge.
So I'm currently waiting for some new Seitz Jewels and Setiz Reaming tools from England to arrive.
One thing I can't understand, is that the ETA 6498 watch movement uses a 2.20mm diameter Seitz Jewel, however, there is no corresponding 219 reamer available for the Seitz Jewelling Tool?
Let me know if you the reason for this, it will be much appreciated.
I'm going to continue working on making my watch, I might have the train bridge tested before the new jewels arrive!
Thanks for watching.

That barrelbridge looks awesome, like the shape. A new jewel I think is certainly the nicest solution, but I'm not a watchmaker. Good luck and thanks for posting your adventures. Love your videos Dean.

I really like to hear the noise when you are working, from the workshop when you are working with your watch, rather than to the music.

I am usually listening music in the background while I work, however it will get my videos copyright claimed

Hi Dean, liking your sharing again. The filing is soothing to the parts finisher here at AA. Enjoy the continued filing it is fun work to me. Thank you, Lance & Patrick.

Hello from Edinburgh. MSCdirect has a 2.19mm reamer in their catalog. Drill Service (Horley) Ltd probably has it or can help you find one, Genswiss likely has one as well. Try searching under the inch equivalent 0.0862”. Buy yourself a set of pin gages if you don’t have them. They are really useful and inexpensive for small sizes.

fullerton tools i believe does custom size reamers. deltronic pins are great too

Love the channel, I’m not a watchmaker but I machine small tools and parts to aide model ship making on my Sherline mill and lathe so the content is very interesting.

For anyone wanting to make a watch I recommend Stefan Gotteswinter channel, he makes precision machining tools and projects, and always go in detail and try to understand what is going on in the machining operations.

I would find a larger diameter jewel and cut it down to fit, or ream the hole larger for it. I enjoy watching your work.

Always interesting Dean, is there tool called a hole closer after you have set in the jewel, i'm sure iv'e heard of it somewhere in in the jewelling tool set....Thanks for posting

Thanks Bill! I always thought they were for jewels with setting, not the friction type?

Hey man, that’s a bummer... Overshooting dimensions that is. If you decide to go with a chaton or something to hold the original size ETA jewel, the Seitz style reamers aren’t all that hard to make. It’s just a D-bit cutter with a bit of clearance to one side. If you can turn, harden and polish a pivot to dimension, you can do the same with a reamer :). The smooth shank of the reamer works as a burnisher so as long as that’s the largest part of the diameter and consistent for its length you’re golden. Keep it up!
@DeanDK
@DeanDK 5 лет назад
Thanks Karl!! I was thinking that if larger diameter jewel is not correct thickness I would do Chaton for it, maybe even out of gold! 😂

Have a look at Clickspring channel where he makes his own reamer out of blue pivot steel. You can make any size custom reamer you need following his method.

hi Dean. why wouldn't you use from your staking set a rounded hollow punch to push a little material? then follow up with a flat hollow punch to finish it up? doesn't even show if done gently and in stages. particularly useful in tightening up sloppy screw holes.
@DeanDK
@DeanDK 5 лет назад
Thanks Lawrence! I didn’t think of that, I was thinking a few hardish hits with lunch to close hole! But this sounds great, I’ve already order the new jewel so if it’s not correct thickness I will definitely try your method! Thanks so much!!!

Why didn't you enlarged the hole and made a small brass juwel holder?
@DeanDK
@DeanDK 5 лет назад
I would love to make gold chatons for the movement But I feel that it wouldn’t suit this design. also, if the larger diameter jewel that I ordered works. The corresponding reamer for the jeweling tool is available too. I love toolmaking and think I could make a reamer but I at this point I want to just focus on the watch.

hi bro.I would like to recommend you to use chatons instead of normal jewels.your watch will look way better and more professional.just google gold chatons and if you just couldn’t buy them online contact me.I might be able to help you with that.
@DeanDK
@DeanDK 5 лет назад
Hi Ara Wolf! I love gold chatons! I’m just not sure to have for this watch that I’m making.. I definitely want to for future watches! Well if this new jewel coming isn’t adequate this watch may end up with chatons! And if that’s the case I will let you know . Thank you 🙏😊

I have questions, but they come because I am interested in learning, not because you are doing it wrong! wonder why you didn't set the plate up on the centre bush in the lathe and machine the outside instead of filing?
@EmmaRitson
@EmmaRitson 5 лет назад
probably making a reamer is the easy way out? interested to see what you end up with

Hehe no worries Emma! Sometimes I think something is a good idea until I start filing. In all honesty it didn’t take that long, and I’m a bit weird that I love filing metal.. definitely next time I will turn in the lathe 👍🏼

Hi Dean. Try making your own reamers from silver steel. Not really that difficult. Machine and then harden them. See Clickspring video for how. Great to share your journey in watchmaking. Theclockworks.biz

why not just put a buch in the oversized hole and then drill it out and maybe solder the buche in too
@DeanDK
@DeanDK 3 года назад
Hi, sorry about delayed reply. These reamers are designed to match the jewel size. They are precisely undersized to hold the jewels by friction, also planning on making a few watches so trying to get manufacture technique right
