Hands Down the BEST Nuemann U87 Clone on the market today
Neumann is easily one of the most recognizable microphone manufacturers around today: both for incredible quality and price.
The tonal quality and detail were stunning. It is by far the most musical sounding vocal microphone ever made.
Neumann made another microphone, the U67. Both the 47 and 67 required an external power source: something the main microphone of this discussion does not require.
The U87 was released at a time when phantom power was being used in microphone design and manufacturing, the U87 U87 just sounds so great, you will find thousands of records that used this microphone during the tracking process.
Even the most affordable Neumann U87 clones featured here offer smooth and clean sonics that are comparable to the legendary U87, whilst being a fraction of the price.
But it’s important to remember that these U87 clones are not going to be perfectly identical to the vintage U87. They are made differently, and they will only be able to sound similar.
Even the brand new U87 Ai’s are essentially replicas of the vintage U87. This is because classic microphones were hand made and no two sounded exactly the same. They all possess uniquely individual sound qualities!

TLM103 is not a clone, it’s a modern voiced microphone that is transformerless. It’s a great mic, but it’s not a clone. Warm audio is a clone.
@TieDyeKitty
@TieDyeKitty 2 года назад
Hey, Thanks for the comment buddy. So in your opinion, it is just a modern voiced, transformerless microphone made by Neumann. In my opinion Neumann found a way to make a cheaper production model of one of their best selling microphones by using one capsule rather than two, cut back on the electronics used while almost maintaining "that Neumann Sound" This is the reason I call it a U87 clone, because if Neumann marketed the TLM103 as a clone, then no one would even want to buy a U87 anymore. And yes they sound different to each other, and so do vintage U87's, they all sound different from each other. I could have said all these things in my video, but it would make the video even longer my friend.

@Plautus egal I hope you don't think that I am trying to pick a fight with you on this topic, because I am not. I am just trying to give home recording artist good sounding options if they cannot afford the U87. But if a person can afford to buy a U87, I am not trying to discourage them in any way. I own a TLM103 its my workhorse, but I will buy a U87 when I can. But there is not a massive difference in the sound of the mics, here is a side by side I did ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uCscezR24Vc.html
@TieDyeKitty
@TieDyeKitty 2 года назад
@Plautus egal but if i drop the gain on TLM there is a drastic change, it seems very gain dependant. But it all comes down to application in my opinion, as I said, what are you recording and what technique are you going to use. But as a self recording artist, there comes a point where you just need to "capture " your idea and not want to think about technique otherwise the moment is gone. This is my problem, Affordability and just get the job done. And I dont know if you also face this problem as an artist?

@@badmiddens hey thanks for your comment, I don’t believe in using clones and would rather buy the original mic, but sometimes a musician may not be able to afford one, myself included. So the video is just about giving others the opportunity to get something that sounds close enough to build a certain amount of confidence in performance, this is not for the studio buff who is trying to replicate frequency responses if you understand where my opinion lies.

So my best advice is to rent one for a day if that is available in your country, and get a couple clones as well just try them out. You may honestly end up loving a clone for some strange reason on your voice my friend, I have seen that happen a few time. lol And people on ebay now seem to want near to new prices, so its not really worth it anymore for most gear.

I look at certain pieces of equipment that have a track record as investments, I can buy them, use them and if in a financial jam, I can then sell them for almost the same price as when new. Other gear seems to be a fad for awhile, then they are not, at that point no one wants them and they become trash. So I never regret buying the Neumann. lol

This is exactly the sort of thing I love to hear, I got the TLM103 a few years ago and love it, but yet online I see so many people bash it, and they speak of the U87 like it is some sort of GOD. But in my last few videos I put both mics against each other, and my take away is that the TLM can stand up against the U87 with no problem in cardioid mode. But the U87 is still a mic that I would like to get, because it is just a little smoother than the TLM. So GO FOR IT! never look back! A Neumann will always have resale value unlike a cone anyway. I can tell the difference in speakers I can tell the difference in microphones but I'm still having difficulty actually hearing the differences between capacity and some audio crossover parts and of course some amplifiers. what I can tell you? there are some things that are just worth the price and you know what what you get in return is something that is quite honestly one of the best investments you can make. I have a special joy for hearing other people's voices and you know what when they are absolutely perfect when everything is just wonderful when just a little nuances of their voice come through I get all giddy. use quality gear all the way through out your chain all the way to your recorder and I'm telling you you're going to be in heaven. with gear like this you don't want to skimp on what you're recording on or your analog-to-digital converter and if you really want to be brave go straight to analog. I'm not saying there isn't some very good mics out there in the $600 price range or even in the sub hundred dollar price range what I'm telling you is there's something very special about this microphone maybe it's just the way it makes you feel I don't know but it's amazing

TLM 103 for me - and I’ve used both extensively, is a much more brittle and difficult microphone. The lack of transformer makes it thin and cold to my ears. I think if you listen to direct comparisons it’s pretty obvious. Having said that, beginner engineers tend to prefer brighter mics of which the TLM is surely one. However, it’s not a pleasing brightness when compared to a u87 with a hf boost.

Don't mean to be a troll, but dont want people to get missinformed either 103 is not a U87 at all, and they do sound different, first it doesn't have a transformer, neither has negative feedback in the circuit design to deemphasize or compensate for the huge, pronounced high end bump a capsule with k67 backplates naturally has. This is the main factors to atrribute for the differences in their sound. Its why the 103 mic, no offense to you and your property, but doesn't sound as refined and smooth as a U87, but rather somewhat harsh and very bright. Anyway the reason why its one of the best sellers is not because its that good, its rather good marketing, making you believe you are getting a mic that sounds like a u87 in a more affordable package ( but still overpriced for what it really is)...if what you want is a very bright mic, there are much cheaper options than that.

Hey Bernardo, sorry to offend you, and yes you have the right to stand up for what you believe to be true, but in the context of what I am trying to prove I also have the right to prove my case. So on my channel I have done many comparisons of the U87 vs the TLM103 so that other self recording artist can actually hear the difference for themselves, because the 2 mics are very very close in sound, and the reason I do this, is so that another artists may not try to break their bank account trying to achieve the U87 when they can simply wait till they can afford to get one. They can use the TLM103 and be just fine. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uCscezR24Vc.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KsF3HbkIXls.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xgOJHiELB7g.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-klwbwLCtRaU.html I hope you understand, stay safe.

The TLM103 is NOT a clone of the U87. The TLM 103 should not be compared to a U87. It has the same capsule, sure, but it is not for the same use. I own a TLM103 and I love using it. @@TieDyeKittyU87 and TLM 103 - the main differences are twofold: the heart of the mic - the capsule - the K103 capsule is inspired from the K67/K87 drilling pattern, yes, BUT (and this makes a huge difference) - it is not a dual capsule, so the backplate has essentially nothing behind it, whereas the U87 family of mics (K67/K87 capsules) have dual backplates and capsules, which changes the response and character of the acoustics, even in cardioid alone. The other big difference is the circuit. The U87 mics use a transformer-coupled circuit, which adds character with second-order harmonics, imparted by the transformer in the circuit. The transformer also creates a bit more noise. Also, the K67/K87 capsules do have a rather bright presence boost, which is then attenuated in the U87 circuit design (EQ capacitor inbuilt), whereas the TLM 103 has its unique capsule presence untamed, with no frequency attenuation and no 2nd order (musical) harmonics to be imparted by a transformer.. All that being said, the 103 is a nice mic and standard for VO/VA/rap, broadcast. If someone doesn’t know how to make it, (the 103), sound good, it stands to reason that they know little to nothing about off-axis response and the art of EQ’Ing at the source. :)

I've used it many times and I can say with certainty that the TLM 103 is definitely NOT like a U87. It's too bright and crispy. The lows sound anemic and it is extremely susceptible to plosives. Its lack of a transformer makes it very detailed but in combination with the presence peak just mean it's really good at accentuating mouth noise. There's cheaper microphones (not Neumann) that sound better. It's ok on some sources but not most voices.

Oh wow, I am glad you had the opportunity to test different microphones and know what to look out for. I myself have done comparisons between the two mics on this RU-vid channel to help self recording artists draw their own conclusion before they spend their money. So thank you MidnightMilk for contributing to this post, and your points are still valid without a doubt, the 103 does behave differently and the person using it must know how to use it in every application for best results.

What mic is better then that is not Neumann?
@MidnightMiik
@MidnightMiik Год назад
@@jonathanarnold2225 There are many microphones that I prefer over the TLM 103. Since I don’t really like the microphone it’s kind of a low bar. I’m not saying that I dislike ALL Neumann microphones. Not at all. Their vintage U87, U67, U47 and the rarer models sound amazing! They’ve reissued the U67 and it is very good. I’m not as into the U87 Ai but it is still an excellent microphone. As for U87 alternatives or Neumann alternatives in general: Stam SA 87 is a very excellent alternative to a vintage U87. Beesneez makes a very convincing U67. If you’re looking for something transformerless, the Vanguard V4 is an excellent microphone Roswell has a few excellent alternatives. Neumann may have minted the gold standard decades ago with their vintage tech but there’s been an explosion of microphone manufacturers recently that are making excellent gear at a fraction of the cost. If you’re running a professional recording studio then you should probably still have a real U87 just because certain clients expect it and will go somewhere else if you don’t have it. If you’re upping your home studio, the need to have one becomes a personal preference. But really it’s almost an ego thing at this point with so many excellent alternatives available. The exception would be a professional voice actor that needs to match studio recordings in their home and are working every day. For example the announcer voice for a TV network. They have to be available every day. They are paid extremely well and can easily justify the expense. Though I bet if they used a non Neumann alternative no one would would complain if they didn’t know.

@@MidnightMiik any other great u67clones that are sub 1000?
@MidnightMiik
@MidnightMiik Год назад
@@jonathanarnold2225 I wish! Stam and Dachman seem to have nailed the U87 but the U67, especially a vintage U67, has some magic that is very difficult to replicate. The Beesneez BU67 is the best U67 wannabe I know of. Right now it's going for $1422.78 USD. Definitely above $1000 but still only a quarter of what a U67 reissue runs. Warm Audio has a sub $1000 WA67 that isn't a "bad" microphone but it isn't as spot on as the Beesneez. Sometimes used WA67s pop up for under $500. Where most manufactures seem to fail with a U67 clone is in the high frequency response. Many attenuate the high end to keep it from sounding "hyped" but often overdo it leaving the mic sounding dull. A U67 has a beautiful top end that is smooth, detailed and definitely not hyped but still present. Stam also has a U67 clone that I haven't heard but if they put the same attention to detail they put into the SA87 then I have some hope it will be good. Still over $1000 though. My advice is: Unless you absolutely NEED it right now, hold off until you can save up for the BU67.

Because it is transformer-less, it will have sibilance issues depending on the mic preamp and gain settings. If you want a good clone, buy the Mic-Parts DIY kit. It is the closest in my ears.
@TieDyeKitty
@TieDyeKitty 7 дней назад
!00% agree with GAIN setting because that is the most important thing, the problem most bedroom producers encounter is the average Audio Interface does not have a "Gain" knob, but more of an input knob. But an external mic pre amp in most cases have a Gain and Output knob, this way as you know you can raise the output volume on a channel to get your meters moving without pushing Gain! That was how I first started using the 103, it was only after I downsized my studio, did I run into sibilance issues with the 103, because I could not adjust really adjust gain on my interface. So an external pre amp is a game changer, so it would probably be the first thing I buy in order to start recording music again!
@irawardofficial
@irawardofficial 7 дней назад
@@TieDyeKitty Yes indeed !! Me too, I have down sized as well and have gone down the rabbit hole of home studio recording. It seems to me that today's "cheap" interfaces can't drive the microphones properly and they make the mics sound dead. No matter how hard you push the gain and treble, they sound horrific. Although I can afford to get a u87, a Calrec RQP 3200, a DBX 520 and a Focusrite Red2 EQ, I can't justify the investment for making just "demos" LOL. I am trying to get as close as I to that sound without the price... The 103 is a great mic for the money. That and a ISA one should do the trick. A lot of guys are making it work with cheaper preamps. Like the Symetrix 528, I hear that they are really good and have a vintage but transparent sound. The Golden Age Project PRE-73 Single-Channel Premier Microphone Preamp is another one, has a really good transformer. I will definitely buy a couple and test them...

Because i have done many side by side comparisons on the Neaumann TLM103 as a cheaper alternative to the U87 as "a clone" and many people on RU-vid have shot that down. It comes down to what you like, what works for you and what you can afford, they all will get the job done, but when you find the perfect mic for your voice, you will have less work to do in the mix. i get what you say but the tlm 103 sounds nothing like a u87. The u87 sounds much fuller, richer and warmer. You showed some artists like beyonce and billie eilish using the 103. Sure they did, but beyonce is definetely using a telefunken 251 or sony c800g, same as billie eilish now. T-Pain also used the Sony C800g. There is nothing wrong with the 103 but the U87 is far superior. I know many many people who are dissapointed of this mic cause it sounds too harsh. SO much more artists using the U87, like Dababy, Wiz Khalifa, Kid Laroi, Ariana Grande in her home studio and the list goes on because the u87 never dissapoints! Its a mic which fits on all voices. I know what you mean cause the tlm grabs the character of the u87, but it doesnt come close enough. You get what you pay for and an u87 is a lifetime investment. You even can make great records in 50 Years with this mic. Just my point.

You can upgrade from a TLM if every you feel the need, I have other videos on my channel where I put the mics head to head to prove my case. So yes the U87 sounds better, but how much better..5% better, 50% better or 100% better? I live in a country where a U87 cost $6400USD but the ave monthly salary is $615USD so even tho I would love to buy one, A TLM gets the job done also, and I know there are other countries around the world where artist have even greater hurdles to overcome.

Thanks for your input, all clones still have their own sound because they are not an Original Neumann, but lets take that one step further by saying that no two mics will sound exactly the same, even if they are the same brand and model. In my opinion, which is all this is and you are free to see my point or not. One of the first Neumanns had a tube, then came a transformer version, then came a transformerless all based upon the same popular capsule. Seems like a way to make the same "Sound" more affordable at different price points, but Neumann will never say it, because then people will not buy the more expensive model.

After those test, I made this video to let other Artist know that there are many options if you cannot afford a U87, and another Neumann may very well be a great option that sounds very close to a U87.
