About Forge de Laguiole:
Forge de Laguiole pocket knives are actually too pretty to just be called a pocket knife. That's why these Laguiole knives are often called folding knives. Forge de Laguiole preserves the tradition of the hand crafted Laguiole knives since 1987. It is done in a modern factory designed by Philippe Starck. The stylish folding knives are made for regular use and are hand crafted with beautiful handles in wood or buffalo horn. The waiter's knives or pocket knives with corkscrews have been made for the Paris taverns for centuries. The knives of Forge de Laguiole are true style icons.
Forge de Laguiole, the real hand crafted French tradition
Forge de Laguiole is the most famous brand to produce Laguiole knives. Laguiole is a village south of the Massif Central in the highlands of Aubrac in the French Auvergne. The village is named after the famous knives. Originally the name Laguiole was deducted from “la gleisola” which means 'small church' in local dialect. The history of Laguiole knives goes back to the 12th century. The knives were made in the region by small iron smith companies for shepherds and hunters. The knives are famous for the axe trademark on every Laguiole knife. The handles of the knives are made from natural materials like buffalo horn.

Hi, Sébastien is right, there is a legal precedent and an arrest that confirms that a Laguiole iis legal to carry in France. I am sure that in rural villages you could actually cut up a sausage while waiting in line at the bank... The law in France prohibits carrying knives with a fixed or locking blade unless you have a very good reason, like for work or if you are a hunter with a valid hunting licence. An Opinel has a locking ring so if the law is applied strictly, you can not carry one in public places. Yes, real Laguioles are beautiful works of art. There are many fakes, the truly good ones are either made in the town of Laguiole or by certain knife makers in Thiers, all according to the same design. Note that French people really use these for everyday tasks. The top models, called the Extras, have a corkscrew and sometimes also a punch, and are the allround tools for farmers. The expression goes that a French farmer uses his Laguiole to repair a fence and open a bottle of wine, to cut his bread and open a bottle of wine, to punch the gut of a cow and open a bottle of wine, to cut sausage or cheese and open... you get the idea. Yhey are incredibly well made. I have carried and used mine everyday for 28 years (a G. David 'arbalete' Extra with corkscrew and punch and a horn handle, made in Thiers), I have pried a@with it, whittled, scraped, opened thousands of boxes and blisters, cut electrical wire, made pointed sticks, drilled holes, cleaned mud and manure from my boots, cur bread and sausage, cheese, anything you can think of, I sharpened it so often the carbon steel blade has lost 2 mm in width, and it can still cut paper, the tip did not break, the blade never chipped. And the spring system still holds the blade tight, there is no play after 28 years! Thanks for the great videos by the way, from an old Dutch guy in France. One more thing: in France the tradition is that if you receive a knife as a gift, you pay a coin in return, so it will not cut the friendship. Good tradition I think. ;-)

thanks a lot for sharing Frank! It was a good read!The tradition of giving a coin in return of a knife is the same in all of Europe I believe but mostly forgotten in places where knives play no role in tradition. I think it's a very old tradition from our far ancestors

The knife was put into piece of bread so they can pray. Forge, Aubrac and Chateau make some of the best Laguiole knives and corkscrews. Prices are closer to $150 on up.

D William :- The cross and praying shepherders is one of the myths surrounding this knife. Actually the cross was a recient addition and is a marketing ploy, but a good story nontheless.

Sharp Knife the cross/pond were added to some knives as early as the late 19th century and was based on legend. Since I know I’m not that old and suspect you aren’t either we really don’t know. The bee popped up around 1909 I believe. Also, after WW1 I believe most shops shut down for quite sometime but I’m not 100% sure of this last bit of info. Good knives nonetheless.

What, no batoning?!
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 лет назад
hahaha!
@FrankSchweppe
@FrankSchweppe 7 лет назад
I just batoned a one inch stick into smaller sticks with it. :-) Seriously, I would never use it to baton a thick log with it, but it is fine for splitting sticks as long as you can put pressure directly on the spine near the handle. If you have to press down on the handle it will start to close as it has no lock. But no lock means there is no lock to break. An Opinel will break, the Laguiole will just start to close and you will then stop abusing it. The blade itself (mine, from carbon steel) will take some light batoning without any sign of damage. These things are works of art but also real tools. Call me crazy, I put a sharp scraping edge on part of the spine so it can be used to strike a firesteel, or just scrape really well. With the blade closed btw. ;-)

My Laguiole has a juniper handle. This wood has a marvelous smell, the same you can sniff when you are hiking in the bush near the Mediterranean sea. Love it so much ❤️

Forge de Laguiole make the most elegant shape of all the laguiole manufacturers. Very sleek, beautifull & simple. They keep the decoration to a reasonable level without becoming over the top and vulgar. Btw, the story about the shepherd praying with the knife is only made up unfortunatly.
@sebastienchateau7559

Hi DBK ! awesome knife. Actually this knife is popular here that it is the only knife you can legally carry, there actually is a law saying this is the only knife alowed for EDC. It competes with the Opinel in terms of which is the more iconic knife. This particular one is from Forge Laguiole but many more firms or smiths make it (l'Arbalète, Roger David,..), most of which are found around the town of Thiers. Cheers fellas !

@sebastienchateau7559
@sebastienchateau7559 7 лет назад
Cdlt
@sebastienchateau7559
@sebastienchateau7559 7 лет назад

Esprit Critique, Both pronunciations are often used. Look up the video "Comment est-ce qu'on prononce "Laguiole"?" From that video's description: "To resolve a long standing controversy John and Claude have with Robin on how to correctly pronounce Laguiole we asked the locals who live there. But alas, we did not get a consensus and the controversy continues."

@@meloncholy4924 Hey Tristin, yeah, it's a bit of a mine field when looking for these knives as there's so many fakes. I just ordered an 11cm from the same company and it comes with the solid hand crafted bee. I have done much searching on the interweb for these knives and most companies now do the one piece bee.
