This is exactly the type of field test that people want to see - a natural extension from the important technical detail, but developing the reality of using the camera in different settings that we visit ourselves. This is a massive difference for me. Although I am not a Nikon shooter, the results in your images Nigel, were excellent. I would take a higher megapixel sensor in order to crop and develop images from within images - a subject you have discussed previously. Great blog - keeping it real so everyone keeps developing!

A photography-youtuber told me that I'm stupid buying a camera just because it has IBIS (X-T3 vs X-H1) but it is such an advantage when you shoot primarly handheld (hiking). If you need to print really big with a "lower" MP camera then there is always the option of shooting panoramas. The resulting image will have a lot of MPs.

Depends how rushed you are to get the shot and some scenes are harder to stitch than others. It's an option sure but I think around 45MP is the sweet spot for file size v printing v cropping. I'll have to wait a few years for the R5 to drop in price lol.

Keep a crop sensor camera for when you need croppability. Narrower field of view plus very tight pixel pitch. Taking a 24MP APS-C as an example you would need a 54MP FF camera to get the same croppability

This was a terrific presentation and I appreciate your approach by actually taking photos, rather than focusing on a spec sheet! I am very much looking forward to receiving my Z5 as a complement to my D850 and believe it will serve me well from a stills perspective in my paid work as a backup...and as walk-around kit. I also feel in the minority, thinking that the pricing of the Z5 is quite reasonable, considering it is Full Frame, has IBIS, is weather-sealed, etc... Sure, there is a 4K crop, but I believe there is no crop if shooting 1080p...and, as a limited video shooter, that’s all I need. Your footage and images are wonderful and demonstrate that it isn’t all about the gear...it’s the one behind the viewfinder that makes the REAL difference, not the additional FPS statistics :) Thank you for a great video! Coming from the A7RIV I specifically bought the Z5. Not a budget issue obviously. I noticed with my RIV I got lazy and would always use cropping at home to get the exact composition I want. (No matter how many MPs, cropping enlarges noise, reduces perceived detail). Bought a lower MP, basic camera to help force myself to get it right in camera. With that said will be getting the z7ii eventually or z8/z9 but this experiment made me better, also made me realize I don't use 90% of the features on "pro" cameras.

One thing I appreciate about having more megapixels that goes beyond the size of the prints I'm printing is the ability to crop further into the scene. This gives me more compositional options for a given lens, and also allows me to lighten my load by omitting a longer focal length lens I might otherwise need to take to get high quality images.
4 года назад
Longer lens compresses the scene more. So you can't get the same image by just cropping further in as you'd get with naturally long focal length.

@stevemozzie6497 4 года назад
D700 12mp - more than enough.
@AmorLucisPhotography
@AmorLucisPhotography 4 года назад
@SwitchRich Absolutely!. There's no point having the megapixels if your lens is not up to it. But if your lens is up to it, then more room to crop is an advantage of more megapixels over and above the size of the prints you are producing.
@AmorLucisPhotography
@AmorLucisPhotography 4 года назад
@ As Mads Peter Iversen has pointed out: “A telezoom lens does not compress the world whatsoever and it doesn’t make distant objects look bigger. On the most basic level it crops your field of view.” As best I can determine and assuming you don't move, the only difference between cropping and zooming is that zooming narrows the depth of focus for a given angle of view and focus point, whilst cropping (obviously) preserves the depth of field of the shorter focal length.
4 года назад
@@AmorLucisPhotography @SwitchRich Oh I see what you guys mean. Shooting the same frame from the same spot makes no difference other that the depth of field and pixel loss. Moving and framing the object to match it to shorter focal length brings the background closer and compresses it. Two very different things that I got mixed up. Thanks for helping me understand that better.

Yep, I think Nikon went with XQD because they heard too many complaints about their SD slots being slow on cameras like the D850 and D500, but that was the fault of the SD slots not being UHS-2, lol. I think Nikon, Canon, and Sony have finally "agreed" to set the standard at dual SD for the medium-end bodies, and maybe one XQD/CFE slot (or two) for the highest-end bodies. Either way, Nikon seems to be the way to go for serious landscape work. Loving their great IBIS and sharp lenses...

@@64BBernard Then people are dumb for complaining about their speed versus the XQD slot, they probably had slow SD cards. I guess it was a worse problem a camera or two prior, either way Nikon has had dual card slots in all their mid-range DSLRs for years, both FX and DX, so for them to just dump dual card slots and go with a single XQD, they had to be getting some sort of feedback from customers. They probably DIDN'T get enough complaints about the D7500 dropping the 2nd slot compared to the D7200, either. Ya win some ya lose some; Nikon learned their lesson considering that now the $1400 Z5 has dual SD.

If they do that at under 2k, they could really capture some market share. Difference between Nikon's entry level and others is they didn't sacrifice the things that truly matter (IMO). Weather sealing, dual card slots, GREAT EVF. This is a pro grade PHOTO camera. It really isn't getting the hype it deserves.

Good to see this video. I get the impression that some people discount the significance of IBIS because it was initially more widely used in MFT and APSc which they regard as not suitable for landscape photography. As you demostrate the technology has evolved to the point where it has real value for landscape photography using larger format cameras. A couple of points: (i) shutter speed as a reciprocal of focal length stems from the days of film. With modern high resolution digital sensors particularly if you are looking to extract maximum detail from high quality lenses it is safer to leave a bigger margin. (ii) The fraction of acceptable images at a given shutter speed is determined by a statistecal rather than absolute relationship. When pushing the lower limits of shutter speed it can be advantageous tp take a short burst of images and pick the sharpest in when post processing. Card capacity is cheap.

Used it for around a decade with Pentax DSLRs. It is ironic that back then Nikon and Canon (and as an extension their users) argued it couldn't or shouldn't be done due to limitations, concerns of IQ degradation, or in-lens stabilization being superior. But now it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

@@BananasananaB That's perfectly fine. Just pointing out IBIS is a nice to have not essential for landscapes. Many pros still using Canon 5D Mk iv's. Even wildlife shooters have been using the 1DX Mk ii for long time. I can see once you get IBIS you won't want to go back but for those that don't it doesn't mean their photos are crap, far from it.

@@SteveP_2426 That's perfectly fine too. Just tired of people misreading what others are saying and then reacting to what they think someone meant versus what they said. I never claimed anyone's photos were crap without IBIS. You said that and you came to that conclusion falsely on your own. This is the problem with comments online. People don't read to understand but to react. It's frustrating.

What a great episode, Thank You Nigel for your thoughts and workflow...! It suits You to go handheld, to snap the moment. But then again: You have trained composition a lot...! It shows. This camera is becoming a favorite...!

Who said you can't get great images on a kit lens. Buying a larger megapixel camera is great, but what are you going to do with the images. If the sole purpose is to post on social media waste of the data captured. You also need to think about the computer you plan to edit the files on. 42megapixel 5 shot panorama is going to be a huge file. I would agree the larger file size is more data & gives greater flexibility to crop in post, but try to get the composition right in camera. This video was stunning. Demonstrates to many that an entry level full frame camera with a kit lens will still produce high quality images for the masses. Top marks Mr Danson Sir.

Going point on the file size and your computer's ability to handle it. Says Martha who may well need to add more RAM.

Great video Nigel, love the photographs so much! I think this camera will be every beginner photographer's first pick from now on! It's compact, cheaper than any other new full frame camera out there and actually very good! :)

Really like the pictures that you got. A lighter lens seems very helpful in having a higher chance to bring the camera out. And this lens does have the 24mm. I personally think it is a better angle than SONY's new 28-60. For the 50 mm, does 6.3 aperture has enough sharpness?
